Took our 13 week old puppy here for his first visit and was told on the phone and advertised on their website that new/first time clients are free for the first visit. The staff is super friendly and helpful, but when the doctor came in she did not explain anything to us about his shots or why he was getting certain ones. She rushed through very quickly and gave him a shot and 2 pills and the bordatella up his nose. HOWEVER, looking online at certified AKC websites it shows he was already up to date and did not even NEED these interventions for another few weeks possibly up to 36 weeks!!! When we were leaving they gave us a ton of information on insurance and other types of medications and pills to get for our dog and also I was charged $89 for the visit, when they advertise and I was told that first visits are free. They told us to come back every 3 weeka two more times for basically the same exact shots. (Mind you, this was his 3rd round of shots already) The doctor also kept referring to our male dog as HER and SHE and asked us numerous times if we brought a stool sample, which made me feel as though she did not even bother looking at his chart or listening to what we were telling her. I felt that this place was all about the money and pushing meds that are not necessary. We have brought our 2 other dogs here when I was living with my parents and I never had a problem, so I feel as though they took advantage of me being younger (24) and not knowing much about puppy shots. Do your research, know what your dog needs, and be prepared to pay for your first visit no matter what they advertise! We will be taking our puppy to a different vet not only for a lower price but also to get a second opinion on what exactly our pup needs at this stage in his life. Chalking that $89 up as a loss!! They should have mentioned what shots he needs and the cost before just giving them and charging you when they say the first visit is free. Disappointed as I really wanted to use the same vet we used on our childhood dogs.

I took my two dogs to this clinic for the first time yesterday. The doctor ignore me at all during the visit she preferred to talk to my 15 ys. old daughter. I was told one price for the services and I was giving a higher price when I checked out. When I was given the bill I decided to request a copy of the bill, the white attendant ignore my request and I have to ask her again, she looked at me very upset. The bill was overcharged and when I told the attendant she responded to me "we have increased the price for it", then I said, sorry but I am only going to pay what I was told, she made me wait for more than 20 minutes to make the correction. When she gave me the corrected bill she trowed to me in a very dis respective and discriminatory way, I asked to talk to the manager, but when I talked to the manager she told me in a worst dis respective way, "you have to wait to talk me", then, I decided to leave the place, because my children and dogs were already waiting for me in the car. I really believe I was discriminated and was not treated fairly as a customer by the doctor, the upset attendant, and the manager. I suggest to the administration of this place to place a sign in front of your clinic stating "for whites only", then people from other races like me could go to places where they can be served better, with more courtesy and no discrimination. I am a University Professor and I would not recommend this place at all if you are not white, because I saw that they treat whites very differently.

The entire team at Portage Park is outstanding. The vets work will with their assistants and they all care. Of course they charge fees.....they also want health insurance, and to pay for overhead and vet medical school debt...The facility is clean, sanitary, orderly, and the vets are top flight. They are thoughtful, careful and considerate. I received follow up calls that were completely unexpected and beyond anything that was expected. I know some people want to cut corners because it is just a "dog" or a "cat" - and part of caring for an animal is treating it with respect like other living things. The staff at Portage Park will do whatever it takes, in consultation with you, to assure that your pet has a long, happy and healthy life. I think youd be hard pressed to find a better place for your pet to get comprehensive professional care.

They are usually very clean and welcoming to my 8 year old Black lab/collie mix, however the last time i came in was because my dog was vomiting every morning. They prescribed nausea medication and ear medication for her as well (she has constant ear infections since she was a puppy). The direction label they put on the ear medication said to flush out her ears once a day for a week. I begun doing so and her ears starting getting more red! I called the doctor to ask him how could this be, and apparently the technician who printed the label misheard him. My poor dog was only supposed to get her ear flushing TWICE A WEEK. She now has an ear infection that she did not have before because of these doctors! Very disappointed!!!

I brought my sick dog in and Dr. Olsen did order tests, BUT my dog was sick. It turned out she had a huge mass on her liver and needed immediate hospitialization. Dr. Olsen called me every day (for several weeks)to check on how we were doing. Unfourtanetly, my dog had to be put to sleep and Dr. Olsen sat with me and my family until we were ready. I could never express my gratitude to her for all she did for us. She even sent me a sympathy card signed her and the staff. Yes, it costs money to see a vet, all lab tests are expensive people or pets but pets cannot talk to tell us what is wrong thats why tests are necessary. Thanks Again to Dr. Olsen and the staff at Portage Park for all of your kindness to my family.

I began taking my dogs there and recently my youngest male lab mix was having problems that I could not imagine. I decided it was time to have a vet look him over at Portage Park Animal Hospital. He was quickly diagnosed with x-rays, he had bladder stones, about 300 stones they stated. I simply new my dog needed help and they surgurically remove all the stones all within hours in that day. I was relieved for him and myself. I wish more hospitals for humans can be that way, they did a great job. I dont know if the expense was reasonable or competative, but my dog is my best friend. thank you Portage Park Animal Hospital.
