Have had several surgeries at Kirklin clinic and UAB. Loved my doctor and staff. Some good, some bad, until had heart episode and ended up in CCU. First couple of days treatment was great. Then this ER resident took over my care and things went down from there. I am a retired RN. He was wearing a name tag with just an initial and Jones on it. So that was not his real name. He was screwy as 2 inch metal screw! He didnt know what he was doing. Also ended up the last few days with a nurse named Susie who was acting like a New Orleans street walker and kept telling me she didnt know why I was in there! None of them noticed that I had gained 30 lbs in fluid in 2 days. They kept telling me I needed more fluid. Why? I was third spacing everything they put in. When the cowboy dr Jones kept on, he told me I had an autoimmune disease related to my thyroid, which Ive been treated for for many years. But he didnt call in a Rheumatologist or Endocrinologist. He was worried about my diarhea! Then whatever he put in my dis charge summary made me seem like something crazy. The cardiologist I went to afterward never even looked at what happened to my heart during surgery to send me to the cath lab, where they told me I was having a heart attack. Worst of all, they all lie. The last week of June, 2016, I sent in a request for all my records there. This has bopped along until another company, ROI IN the Philippines, who now makes copies of UAB medical records, sent me an invoicefor $437.08 before they would send me a cd of the records which were electronic!!!# Today has been 7 (seven) business days and no records have been received. They charged me $22+ for postage and $ 33+ for sales tax. In Alabama we do not pay sales tax on labor, but they insist that it is allowed. The last time I had surgery there, the residents were rude. I have an unstable cervical spine but interns were allower to intubation me numerous times, leaving me with a lot of neck and shoulder pain. Also, I was awake when two residents were filling out my discharge sheet. One told the other to sign it and then took my copy, tore it up, then put it in the trash! I was never given discharge instructions. The residents and interns are rude, mocking, and liars. They are also your doctors of tomorrow. They have no respect or compassion for patients. They are in it for the money only. They can lie about you, totally ruin your reputation and NOBODY CARES BECAUSE THEY HAVE THE POWER!

UPDATE: 08/18/16 UAB apparently reads their google reviews, both of my pregnancy visits for November 2015 and February 2016 (which I posted earlier about the horrible experience) were just recently forwarded to a collection agency and when I asked the UAB financial department which called me...Could I get the account number to make and send payments to UAB? She stated "NO" (I was denied by the financial department for my own account number to pay a bill, %&%)and was told that it would be immediately sent to a collection agency and placed on my credit report, which I just got the letter yesterday from the collection agency. BEWARE of UAB!!! They cannot handle the truth regarding their unprofessional employees. Worst experience in a hospital in my life, (staff is childish and unprofessional), they treat blacks like criminals regardless if you work and have your own private insurance...They force you to sign papers without reading them and bring in a entourage when your husband leaves the room for a few minutes and say he cannot be present because we need to know why you are here???..Im in my 3rd trimester of pregnancy and get asked by a male doctor yelling at me, with a nasty tone, did I just have sex??? Because I wanted to make sure my baby was okay...Seriously... I have marks on both hands from two different RNs that did not take their time and they actually stab the needle in my hands (still have markings on my hands after 4 days of discharge) , one bleed my hand all over the place laughing about it, playing with another nurse about murder and horror movies etc. the doctors and nurses overdose me on 3 to 4 different medications for vomiting and diarrhea every 2 to 4 hours. I never been so drugged in my life, this is only part of the horror story at UAB, especially while pregnant....I cannot say everything I need to say here.. but its the most racist and worst bedside matters experience I had at any hospital in the Birmingham area (Im almost 40 years old). Please pray Birmingham about this hospital, "everything that glitters is not GOLD".

I have been going to Doctors at Kirklin Clinic since 1996. Starting in spring 2014 all of the Kirklin clinic doctors offices were converted to part of the UAB hospital and the classification changed to Outpaitient Hospital Clinics. In conjunction with that change UAB started adding a "Facility Charge" for each visit in addition to the already existing Doctor Office Visit Charge. For me this has ranged from $138 to $195 per visit extra cost for every doctor visit. Their billing on this fee has been very haphazard and this week (Jun 20, 2015) I received a bill from UAB Hospital for an account balance with a date of April 2, 2014, more than a year old. No details were provided as to what the service was for. After investigation and a call requesting an itemized statement I find this is one of the Facility Charge bills from last year. When I called about it the finance clerk told me their system had not been working well and they are just now getting able to bill some of last years bills. This means I have to go back and get my last years records out of storage to see if I have already paid this bill and if my insurance paid a portion of the bill. I am seriously considering moving all my healthcare away from the UAB/Kirklin Clinic complex due to this ripoff charge. They have some great doctors but they are greedy and difficult to deal with in their billing department. Effective 01April2016 UAB hospital has lost its Tier 1 status for patients that are insured on many Blue Cross plans. I have 3 grandchildren I purchase insurance for. Their plans all have a higher cost for Tier 2 which now applies to UAB Hospital.

I traveled from Sheffield Al to UAB hospital ER last night to receive medical care for mastoiditis in both ears and an unbearable migraine that has lasted for days. I was in terrible pain. My husband and I waited from 3:00pm until 12:30 am before being taken back to a room. Dr Blayke Gibson did not order any tests , other than an EKG, which I never got the results from. She advised me that UAB ER had no MRI machine. Several vials of blood were drawn as was a urine sample and when we left ER, all but one vile of blood remained in my room, as did the urine specimen, never tested. I was told that my blood looked good but no details provided. I was given two Tylenol, told that nothing could be done to help me during my visit at UAB, to follow up with my family practicioner, and dismissed. I went to UAB because of a friend who has had mastoid bone removal by a UAB physician. Mastoid bone infections can be fatal in case Dr Gibson may not be aware of this. I will never go back to this ER and am disheartened and angry at the level of care I simply did not receive. One is the lowest rating and the rating they deserve.
