May 31, 2017: After cataract surgery 2 years ago on my left eye, my right eye recently got to the point to where I had to have the cataract removed. I get much more freaked out about things getting close to and/or touching my eye. Dr. Bui performed my first surgery and she along with the excellent support staff were very good, making me as comfortable as possible. Last Wednesday Dr. Bui performed cataract surgery on my right eye. As impressed as I was the first time, I was blown away the second time. Many surgeons have impressively refined skills as well as intelligence and Dr. Bui certainly has this. What makes her different is that along with excellence in knowledge and skill she brings a caring, kind, and nurturing demeanor that is all about seeing to the patient. I have rarely see such qualities anywhere but a surgeon??? Additionally, the support staff have a similar demeanor. I am so appreciative to Dr. Bui and Abby (one of the nurses who helped keep me comfortable during the surgery) for making this procedure so incredibly seamless and comfortable. Not to mention the cloud from the cataract was gone immediately and the very next morning in my checkup the eye that was operated on was seeing better than 20/20 and will get much better as it heals. If you have read this far, none of this is exaggerated. During this cataract procedure, I had ABSOLUTELY no pain. I came back the next morning for a follow-up visit and I could not even feel anything had been done to my eye! Incredible!! I attribute this to two things: Dr. Bui’s excellence/precision as a surgeon and the support from Dr. Bui and Abby every second of the procedure. They both exemplify AustinEye’s commitment to providing patients with both renewed vision and improved visual clarity as well as providing the best care possible. If you have any type of eye issue that you even suspect might require the attention of an expert, AustinEye is my recommendation. And don’t be afraid to have procedures done. You will see a very professional but caring group of people and a facility that is clean and uses state of the art equipment that gives the best possible outcome. I will trust Dr. Bui and Austin Eye with my eyes should I ever need anything. All the surgeons at AustinEye are superior so you can’t go wrong. From 2014: The vision in my left eye had deteriorated to the point that it was just like looking through a heavy fog. It had become a problem at work and most things I did in my personal life and I was getting headaches every day because my eyes were always straining to focus. I finally broke down and scheduled an appointment at Austin Eye. Dr. Marie Bui informed me that the issue was a cataract. Her explanation was easy to understand and her delivery was patient, thorough, warm, and completely open to questions. We scheduled surgery for the next week and being paranoid about anything touching my eyes I was very afraid. Every nurse that worked with me was more than understanding about the fear I felt and took skillful and appropriate steps to calm me and make me comfortable. My pre-op nurse was Shelby. She was kind and encouraging while skillfully preparing me for surgery. Dr. Bui showed this same level of understanding compassion along with the nurse (I believe it was Kay), to help get me through the surgery as calmly as possible. It is very clear that excellence in technical skills and delivering a great customer experience is at the top of the list of priorities for this institution. If anyone has a need for eye services I cannot emphasize enough what a stellar staff Austin Eye has. My recommendation could not be higher.

I have been a patient of Dr. Mitchel Wong for many years. In 2013 Dr. Wong told me my cataracts would probably be removed in 2-3 years. However, in February 2014 my left eye deteriorated quite a bit and by August I could no longer read or see much of anything with my left eye. I had my annual visit with Dr. Wong whereby he told me I was using one eye (right) and he had me scheduled for cataract surgery on October 20th. The staff presented an explanation of the cataract and had me watch a video for further information on cataracts, the surgical procedure, and other pertinent information. On the day of the surgery, the nurses were fabulous and very caring; they explained the procedure and provided medication and eye drops for prepping. During the procedure, Dr. Wong patiently told me what to do - I felt comfortable during the surgery. I will tell you it is cold in the surgery suite. I got a kick out of the talking computer as each process was completed. I went home with a patch over my eyes and instructions on the use of the eye drops and what not to do. At bedtime I had to take off the patch and put the eye drops in my eyes. I noticed the crystal lamp being so clear and bright. Upon awakening the next day I took off the eye patch and was astounded by the clarity, crisp, colorful world I had long missed. I went outside and become engrossed in everything I was seeing. The world was beautiful - even the paved street. I stood there closing the left eye and comparing the difference between it and my right eyes vision. To say the least I was on cloud nine. Dr. Wong had given me one of the greatest gifts - my vision and I am looking forward to getting a new lens for my right eye. I knew Dr. Wong was a great Ophthalmologist when he restored some vision and color back for my moms eyes during the early1990s. So, I knew that if ever I needed treatment for my eyes, I would have the best care. I would like to mention that Dr. Wong has state-of-the-art equipment that are complex in structure that perform amazing tasks. Whether or not anyone reading this has a problem with vision, it is important to have yearly checkups. Having just a slight blurred vision and using readers may not take care of the situation. There could be an underlying issue. If you are diabetic, is it crucial to have examinations done by an Ophthalmologist. I highly recommend Dr. Mitchel Wong for all your visual needs. He is very caring and understands how valuable your vision is. Also, his staff are amazing. Thank you, Dr. Wong for giving my sight back!!!!!!!!!!

My experience with Dr. Shannon Wong was more than I could have possibly wished for --- after two Crystalens surgeries performed consecutively in one week, I now have perfect 20/20 vision in both eyes and I can read documents or a computer screen without reading glasses and at the same time my distant vision is crisp and clear. All my life I have struggled with high myopia -- as a teen I even wore nickel-sized hard contacts to play water polo. I depended heavily on contact lenses, but as I got older I began to have several problems with contacts which caused my vision to get even worse. I developed dry eyes which affects the lens refraction against the cornea so things become blurry. Then I developed bilateral cataracts, and finally I was having trouble seeing even with corrective lenses -- trouble driving, trouble working ( I am a physician). My home ophthamologist recommended cataract surgery but he didnt mention Crystalens -- an accommodating lens. I did some research on my own and started watching cataract surgeries performed on Youtube and learned about the advantages of Crystalens. I recently moved to Texas and found Dr. Shannon Wong on the Crystalens website. He had excellent credentials and a great deal of experience. I also noticed that Dr. Wong performs the Crystalens surgery with lasers and computer-guided assistance, while most of the other surgeries I viewed on YouTube were performed "by hand". I could see that Dr. Wong used the latest leading edge technologies, and was an expert highly-experienced and talented surgeon. As Dr. Wong performed my surgery, I was completely comfortable in his hands. Furthermore, as Dr. Wong performed step after step I heard his reassuring voice say "perfect........yes perfect............there we are...........perfect". In fact, every step of the operation was indeed perfect and the outcome was also perfect. When I returned home I decided to use my 20/20 vision to get re-certified as a private pilot. My flight instructor wore tri-focals. He asked me " how is it that you have 20/20 vision but you are my age and you dont need reading glasses ? I replied "just lucky I guess". Someday maybe I will tell him my Crystalens story.......
