When my 4 year-old daughter needed extensive dental work, we decided to go with Dr. Payne because he was the only pediatric dentist in Michigan that we could find that did acrylic (white) crowns. We had previously been seen by 2 dentist offices and were told that she needed at least 2 crowns. My daughter has an anxiety condition called Selective Mutism and due to this and the amount of work she needed done, we agreed that it would be best to have her dental work done by under anesthesia at the hospital by Dr. Payne. When her procedure was completed, Dr. Payne told us that he did not use the acrylic crowns. Instead he placed nerve blocks and fillings in those 2 teeth. We were surprised but trusted his judgment. When we returned home and looked at her teeth, there was still noticeable brown decay around the fillings in those teeth. Not being a dentist, I thought maybe this was normal for baby teeth. Several months later, we scheduled a progress exam because the decay was progressing and she was getting food caught in it that we couldnt get out. My husband took her to this appointment and was told that there were no soft spots and things looked fine. We were asked to return for annual teeth cleaning. At her annual teeth cleaning, x-rays were taken and by this time the decay was very, visually noticeable. We were told that we would have to repeat the anesthesia procedure with stainless steel crowns. We agreed, her teeth needed to get fixed, but it still nagged me that crowns were not put on originally. These procedures cost thousands of dollars. We scheduled the next hospital procedure as soon as we could. Because of our questioning of the original procedure and wanting to make sure we were clear of what was going to happen on the second procedure, as we do not want to repeat this again next year, I called Dr. Paynes office and expressed my concerns. I scheduled a consultation with Dr. Payne for the following day for a discussion. The following morning, his receptionist called me. She said that she told Dr. Payne about my concerns and it was clear to him that we did not have trust in his work and that we should seek dental care elsewhere. I was then asked if I wanted to cancel my daughters hospital procedure. Looking back on our situation, I feel we did not receive good care at Dr. Paynes office. I do not know why the work was not done as originally planned. I had full trust in him to take care of my 2 children and to be accountable for his work. If I hadnt, I would have gone elsewhere in the past year. I have switched back to our original local pediatric dentist and am quite happy, but have regrets about letting her teeth get so bad under the care of Dr. Payne before seeking care elsewhere.

I drive an hour and fifteen minutes to take my little guys to his office...and it is totally worth it! My oldest sons first experience with the dentist was not a good one, so everytime I would take him to the dentist, he would start to cry before we even got there. It gave him anxiety, and me too. After his first pediatric dentist requested that I come in and help hold him down for a cavity filling, I decided to find a different dentist. I just thought that holding him down would heigten his fear in going to the dentist. I then went to another dentist who did not specialize in pediatrics. She lost her patience, ripped her gloves off and stormed out of the room because she couldnt understand my sons anxiousness and fears in getting a cavity filled. We were both crying after that appointment. I felt completely lost and started to do research. I found Dr. Payne online. His online page was very informative. I decided to give them a call. His staff was wonderful- the receptionist must have talked with me for at least 30 minutes listening to the situation with my son and informing me of the different techniques they use for children with different emotional needs. She did tell me that they have a blanket, but never use it without getting consent from the parent first and the option of taking them to the hospital and putting them under is always there too. My children have had nothing but pleasant experiences there. They do pre-medicate them for any procedures that require dental work such as a filling or extraction, but it has given my son(s) the opportunity to be at ease when going to the dentist. He looks forward to it now and I never thought that day would come. I highly recommend Dr. Payne to anyone out there with children!

I would definitely not recommend this dentist to anyone ever. Wow. My daughter was in for a routine cleaning and checkup and flouride treatment. I have never felt so taken advantage of or insulted by an office or a staff. The entire appointment, from the time she walked in the door until the time I was called to pay the bill was 15 minutes. The bill was $184. At the most, she had 10 minutes spent actually cleaning her teeth. Cleaning cost $72. Apparently for the dentist to "look at" her teeth was $62.00. My daughter said that the dentist was with her for less than 5 minutes. During this time 5 other patients went into the office and came out again. Apparently the dentist "looked at" their teeth during this time. The person who was doing the billing was really nasty about the cost, and actually lied to me about the prices of service until I made her give me a bill. She was really snippy, which is something I have frequently experienced in my dealings with this office. All I can say is, wow. My dental cleanings last 45 minutes, I have the dentist do them, and they cost $100. My daughter has had cleanings other places for significantly less cost.

My 4 year old had several cavities to take care of. He was so scared at the family dentist he wouldnt open his mouth, but he did awesome at this office. The staff are kind, patient and helpful. The atmosphere is not rushed. When given the choice to return to Dr. Bobs or go back to the family dentist for check-ups, my son chose Dr. Bob!
