I am not a fan! When I got my dog about a year ago, I brought her here because this was the vet that accepted the low-cost spay voucher that I had received from Be The Solution.I dropped her off in the morning for her spay, and everything went fine. I picked her up that afternoon, and I was informed that she was heartworm positive. Part of the treatment was getting her on a heartworm preventative right away, since she needed to take that for three months before they could begin treatment. Because of her condition, she needed to take either Heartgard or a medication containing the same active ingredient. Well, they dont stock Heartgard at Southwood, but they told me they could special order a years supply of heartworm medication from a pharmacy, which would contain the same active ingredient as Heartgard. Now, if I could do it again, I would have just gone and purchased Heartgard from another vet. But in the panic of the moment, I agreed to have them go ahead and order this medication from their pharmacy. They tell me it should be in in a few days, and that theyll call me.Well, over a week has gone by, no phone call. I decide to give them a call. I call early in the morning when I get to work, and the woman who answers the phone takes my name and tells me that shell get back to me. Well, by the end of the day, I still havent heard back from her. I call again the next time, same thing. However, after work, I decide to just stop by the office in person and see whats going on. I drive over to their office (which is somewhat out of my way), and I get in line. It takes forever to get someone to help me, and when I finally get to talk to a receptionist, she has no idea whats going on. She tells me she has to talk to someone else, so I stand there waiting for a good 10 minutes or so. Finally, a staff member appears who informs me that the prescription was never filled, but they have no idea why. She tells me that theyll have the pharmacy fill it and rush ship it, at their expense. (Well, thanks, I would hope so.) So basically I had to waste a good 40 minutes of my day driving down to Southwood, waiting in line, waiting for answers, only to be told that my medicine wasnt ready. Thankfully, the pills arrived in a few days, and they actually did call me when they came in. But honestly, this was the most disorganized vets office I have ever seen. Why couldnt they just call me back? Why did I have to actually go in person to get any answers? They just seem disorganized all around. When I was waiting, the man in front of me was picking up his dog from the kennel portion, and they couldnt locate the dogs collar or leash that he came with. Id suggest taking your pets somewhere else.

I used to work here and now that I no longer do, I feel it is time to add a review coming from an educated but unbiased place. I dont work here anymore because it really just wasnt my specialty or life goal, not because they lacked in caring for their patients. People complain about the cost but I happen to know the cost of other facilities and not only is Southwood one of the cheapest options in Tallahassee, their doctors are experts in their field, extremely well educated, and do not order unnecessary tests or do unnecessary vaccines. It really irritates me when people say they push unnecessary vaccines on patients because they actually only recommend 4 vaccines for canines, 2 "Core vaccines"; Rabies (required by law and they do a 3 year rabies vaccine), Distemper/Parvo (a $25 vaccine vs. $1200 for hospitalization, thats kind of a no brainer!, also every 3 years), and 2 "Non-core" vaccines; bordetella (considering the amount bordatella gets passed around at dog parks and bording facilities, also kind of a no-brainer) and last but not least, Leptosporosis (spread by rodent urine, ummm we live in Florida!!, can cause permanent liver damage and most of all, its Zoonotic, so HUMANS can be infected). Tell me how any of those are "unnecessary." To the lovely gentlemen below, skin infections dont clear up overnight. They often get worse before they get better because sometimes it takes a couple tries to find the correct medication. As far as fleas, if you have a severe infestation (which it sounds like you do considering the skin issues) it could take MONTHS of treating not only your dog but possibly your house and your yard before you get the fleas under control. So you might have to go more than once a year to the vet before you get your pets health under control. Yes, they can be a little disorganized but the difference between this animal hospital and the others in town is these are good people, really, who care about doing whats best for pets. They are not perfect but Ive seen work that has come from other hospital and "reduced cost clinics" that would BLOW your mind. I would never trust my pet with 80% of the vets in this town. Bottom line, veterinary medicine is expensive no matter what but their prices are very reasonable and their doctors know what they are doing. Period.

I moved to Tallahassee for graduate school as a first time dog mom. My mini dachshund was 6 months old at the time, and we visited to check the place out before he was to be neutered there. The staff showed us around and Dr. Moodoyan, was lying on her stomach on the floor trying to pet and play with my dog, who was not being very nice! She made a huge effort with him, and after some training and socialization, he became much more friendly. I brought him in with me every month to get his flea and heartworm meds, and the staff behind the counter always came around to give him hugs and kisses while I paid. He had a few serious-ish incidents while I was there, and the doctors were always very patient and helpful (Dr. Moodoyan was our regular doctor, but we also saw Drs. Brown and Iliff for emergencies). I asked tons of questions, and they always took the time to answer them without making me feel stupid or overprotective. I always trusted them to do what was best for my boy, and he loved visiting there. Weve just moved away from Tallahassee and are so sad to leave our favorite vets! Were hoping to find an office we love as much in our new town.

The veterinarians and staff at The Animal Hospital & Pet Resort at Southwood are truly compassionate people who treat you and your pets with the best of care. The front desk staff are always welcoming and attentive. When our 15 year old dog, Jerry, recently became very ill, Dr. Moodoyan and Dr. Brumfield delivered not only the professional experience we needed, but were also sensitive and sympathetic with the care they provided. They both personally called to check on Jerry several times. We also highly recommend the Pet Resort. At first I thought it was kind of expensive, but after I got the tour and had the opportunity to really see how "resort-like" it really is, the cost is more than fair. Our dogs always come home happy and clean! And the staff definitely love their jobs (and our pets!). Even though we live in Northeast Tallahassee, and have to drive a bit further than necessary (there are several vet offices right around us), we feel the qualify of care is definitely worth the distance. We highly recommend The Animal Hospital & Pet Resort at Southwood!
