In April 2016 I had was suffering from two unrelated problems: 1)a slapping walking gait & hip pain, and 2)pain, sleeplessness and limited range of motion in my L shoulder. I chose Catalyst on the recommendation of my good friend, Mike Jackson, at Movin Shoes in Pacific Beach. Brian did a quick evaluation and then Calvin, through his massage and manipulation, determined my chief problems: gait and hip: piriformis syndrome; shoulder: shoulder capsule impingement. Right then I signed up for two sessions/wk with the physical therapists. [35 years ago my physician had prescribed PT for a frozen shoulder. That experience was clinical and boring, and I went for the minimum required.] CATALYST IS DIFFERENT! The Catalyst team uses the Applied Functional Science approach. Catalyst is fun! Catalyst gets to the nub of problems with positive attitude and encouragement. The mood in the large, sunny room is upbeat because the team is cohesive and collegial. Every one of the staff is engaged in his/her own physical activity (running, trail biking, soccer, extreme sports), and as a former runner from age 50-60, I felt right at home now at age 70. I really looked forward to going each time because I learned a lot from Kelsey, Ralph & Kristen; in fact, I liked seeing different therapists because each has a slightly different take, offering subtle and useful suggestions for my stretching, strength & endurance work. I worked hard and I could feel my own improvement in my movements and range of motion. I loved that I could do my warmups while watching Serena Williams or a soccer game on a flat panel screen as I worked out. I loved that a patient with a young child could bring the child in. We’ve all enjoyed numerous babies, toddlers, and pet dogs (including Brian’s). In short, Catalyst creates a community of people working together toward health and wellness. After a year I “graduated” from physical therapy (look for the photo on their Wall of Fame) and I immediately signed up for Personal Training with Jena. This worked perfectly as she had assisted me during the physical therapy sessions, so she simply continued and expanded on what I’d been doing with the therapists & could easily confer with Kelsey, Ralph or Kristen as needed. It’s also great to work with Jena in the same room, as staff members greet me personally, give me a high-five as I complete two sumo transits and show off my wide range of motion. I also had a series of massages from Kristen, who knew all my needy spots! The only reason I must leave Catalyst is that my husband and I are moving out of state. It will be hard for me to leave my friends at Catalyst, as we bonded over the World Series, seeking nice and affordable apartments, chocolate cookie recipes, the best canyons for hiking and biking, TV series, movies. I will have a list of all my stretches and exercises and I hope I can find a physical therapy and wellness practice in my new city so I can continue to stay healthy and well.

From Mike Wifler: I just completed a six month rehab of my right shoulder following extensive rotator cuff and upper bicep surgery. I selected Catalyst PT and Wellness because I was aware of the expertise and exceptional qualifications of the Physical Therapists and their support staff members. At the onset I was in a sling and could not raise my arm. Kristen Knightly, Laurel Proullx and Brian Wilson created a program specifically for my injuries that enabled me to achieve nearly full recovery of range of motion, strength and mobility. I have been thoroughly impressed with their knowledge, experience and application of their extensive skillsets. Each session was intense producing measurable results as we worked through a series of exercise and manipulation. I cant thank them enough for the care, the concern and the extreme effort they put forth on my behalf. Thank you, thank you and thank you one hundred times over. Mike Wifler

Catalyst PT and Wellness should get 10 stars! I am an RN and I work long 12 hour shifts on my feet; that, coupled with being pregnant with my first baby, put my pelvis out of alignment and I was in serious pain. Just normal activities like getting up from a chair caused me pain and I wondered how the heck I was going to get through the rest of my pregnancy. And then Kelsey came to my rescue! After my first screening with her, I felt better! The pain was almost nothing when I left the clinic and the following days got progressively better with the stretches she sent me home with. I stayed committed to the daily stretching because it worked. Im so thankful to have found Catalyst! Im so confident that Kelsey will get me through my pregnancy healthy, strong and pain free! Thank you, Catalyst!

I had a knot in my upper back that is difficult to undo. Brian took care of it quickly and gently, so I had relief in an instant. Not only is he very knowledgeable about physical therapy he is also very passionate about wellness. I definitely highly recommend that anyone with a need for physical therapy and rehabilitation go to Catalyst!
