I wouldnt go near this doctor if you paid me! I had his procedure done in August, 1997 & it was the worst nightmare of my life. I went home to go through 13 days of living hell in withdrawal. There is no such thing a a 24 hour pain free detox. If you are an opiate addict you will have to go through it and come out on the other side like all of us do. I have been clean since 6/22/1999,, almost 17yrs & it wasnt easy but I did what I had to do with people who werent out for just money. This procedure was over $3,000 cash up front & I went home with nothing for the discomfort (HA! 13 days without any sleep for starters, couldnt keep anything down but Pepsi for a week) or the intractable diarrhea which accompanies withdrawal as every addict knows. The procedure itself is what I can see as dangerous. I woke-up still on the table, totally unable to move but I could hear. I listened to the nurses talking about what they were going to have for lunch but what I DIDNT HEAR was anyone IN THE ROOM WITH THE PATIENTS UNDER ANESTHESIA! I was not the only one. I remember being on FULL RESPIRATOR SUPPORT and this was NOT explained and also vividly remember to this day not being able to get enough oxygen and hearing the sound of fluid gurgling in my lungs every time the respirator pumped. Someone ran into the room and sprayed something down the tube which as connecting me to the respirator. That seemed to ease the breathing problems. I finally started to be able to move & within minutes realized just how sick I was. I couldnt hold still, I had defecated in the adult diaper they give you to put on so they obviously know this is going to happen. Thank God for my husband who was able to help me get cleaned-up and get dressed. They gave me a shot of something (they said it was a little more of the anesthetic, Ketamine?) and sent me home. It was a blaring hot day and I was freezing. My husband put the heat on in the car on the way home although I know he must have been suffering. I went directly to bed, couldnt lie still came-out sat in the recliner and just rocked for days because I couldnt sit still. After 13 days of this torture I finally collapsed in fatigue and started sleeping 4 or 5 hours a night after taking 2 hours to get to sleep every night. The final nightmare was the pellet he implanted in my side containing Narloxone. This evil thing gave me a nasty case of cellulitis which I SHOWED to Dr. Gooberman who told me it was far more important that I continue with the pellet (at some godforsaken price, I dont remember how much) as my sobriety was more important than cellulitis. It took a dermatologist 6 months to clear-up that "mild" case of cellulitis as the infection just wasnt responding to antibiotics. I wound-up losing a lot of tissue in the area and it was very painful. I was unable to take anything for the pain due to the pellet! All in all when I read what Dr Gooberman was charged with by the state and DIDNT lost his license (I dont understand why when he killed 7 people with his procedure, I honestly to this day feel I may have been number 8) as I read pulmonary edema was a big risk of the procedure & that is exactly what I suffered while I was under the anesthetic. The nurse confirmed for me that there was a need to give me "medication" down my "breathing tube" because my lungs got a little congested. It WAS NEVER MENTIONED BY DR GOOBERMAN HIMSELF. IF I HADNT ASKED THE NURSE I WOULD NOT HAVE KNOWN IF I HAD NOT INADVERTENTLY WOKEN-UP DURING THE PROCEDURE! All in all this procedure was not intended to be anything more than to get you through the withdrawal which there are many good institutions where you can go to do that where they medicate you for your symptoms not send you home to deal with them! This is nothing but a money grubbing operation by a greedy doctor whom, by the way, told me he was in recovery too but from HEROIN, not from amphetamines as the other articles here stated. You are advised to attend N/A meetings for continued treatment! Margaret Saccomanno

Dr. gooberman and the implant saved my life. I have been clean for 7 years and I would never have gotten here if I didnt start with the pellet.
