Our dog suddenly developed a very large tumor seemingly over night -- think half a lime size right under the skin on her right hip. We thought it was a snake or spider bite. Naturally, we took her to our regular vet, who, upon inspection believed it was a tumor. We had a biopsy performed that showed a very low grade cancer. Due to the large size, out vet recommended Upstate Veterinary Specialists as our vet determined that the large size would require reconstructive surgery (skin graft) a specialist should perform. So, off to Upstate. They determined we should try to reduce the tumor, first with steroids. One week later, the tumor was size was halved. Alas, still too large to avoid some level of reconstruction, they called the "skin flap" method. That would involve a series of incisions to pull/tug skin to cover the tumor area. So, they then recommended a single dose of chemo, injected right into the tumor. We were told that chemo in dogs was much less disruptive to a canines systems than in humans. Except for drinking copious amounts of water, neither the steroids or chemo had any side effects. The chemo reduced the size of the tumor small enough to avoid need for any reconstruction. We brought her in the morning, and, picked her up the next day. The removed tumor and margin area were sent to the lab to ensure all the cancer cells were removed -- result confirmed success. All in all, the surgery recovery went without any hitches. The 8" incision healed over quickly, and, a week later no more head cone. We were able to restart incision after 10 days. From start to finish, the staff, medical technicians and doctors were professional, courteous, and straight forward. The final invoice was a little less than the original estimate. We highly recommend Upstate.

Our dog managed to break his femur while playing in our back yard. Of course it was a Saturday and we had to visit an emergency clinic, but UVS got us in Monday morning for Dr. Krebs to schedule the surgery. Dr Krebs called personally Monday evening to update us on the comfort level of our dog while waiting for surgery Tuesday morning. He called Tuesday morning to tell us how Riley did overnight and again after the surgery to let us know things went well. Then he called us again this morning to let us know what to expect today when we pick him up. Even though we are still in the middle of the injury drama, I couldnt be more pleased with the level of service provided. The whole staff that interacted with us was great. I have no doubt we will see the same level of service as we continue the healing process. Thanks guys for making this process as easy as possible.

I just want to say get a SECOND OPINION! Research the issue on the internet to see what other owners have done before you. I wish I did because my dog has passed now (only a month after her surgery) and only through my own research did I discover what to do, but it was too late from my animal. If the surgery did go well, I was given absolutely no after care instructions that were meaningful for my dog’s condition. I feel like It was all about the money up front, then nobody cared after it was over and just forgot about us and our dog. No shows at appointments by the vets,(when I took off work to be there) and many no call backs when messages were left. I’d rate my experience with Upstate as a sad excuse for animal care, and I’d never recommend them to a friend. I’m sorry Upstate but you did a terrible job!!! Please think about the animals.

We brought our little girl in for a total ear canal removal - she had developed a benign, but painful and stinky (!!) tumor. Dr. Krebs took great care of her and really made us feel comfortable and happy and confident that she was in good hands. She is now running around and playing like she did before that tumor went haywire in her ear. I would absolutely return to Upstate in the future. From the front office staff to the technician to the doctor, everyone was friendly and comforting. Thank you so very much, Upstate Vet, for loving on our Lady Oreo and for answering our worried questions after her surgery. You guys are awesome!

So angry. Called and made an appointment for CERF on 2 dogs. Drove 1.5 hours from Johnson City only to find out my appointment and the optho vet are down in Greenville SC today. The phones automatically ring there, they made the appt and never bothered to tell me. What a waste of my time and gas.

Great service and a little expensive but only place in town that could do ecocardiogram on my cat or would have had to go to Greenville SC. But you get what you pay for with specialists.
