I have been a patient of Dr.Pickerell for almost 2 years and he has done very well. I am very satisfied with his care and the care of his staff. I appreciate theyre personable attitude. They are not "stuffy" at all. Dr. Pickerell is very straight forward and honest. He starts off with very conservative treatment and gets more aggressive as medically necessary. Im sorry that the last reviewer expects him to write a referral, but most specialists dont. That is the job of their primary care provider (any insurance company can explain that to you). It sounds like he/she is more frustrated with this rare disease and is taking it out on the doctor and his office. If he hasnt ever treated your disease and you dont feel he can, then it is up to you to find another doctor that you will be satisfied with. Again, go back to you primary care provider and get a referral to another specialist. Not all patients will get along with all doctors and vice versa. Just because you may not agree with his tactics doesnt mean you bash him, it means you move on and find a physician that is more compatible with your personality. Again, Dr. Pickerell and his staff have been excellent for me. His treatments have been more that justified and his office staff has always been nothing less than exceptional. They make sure that appts are set correctly, call confirmations, my paperwork is always completed in a timely fashion and overall, they are fun. Oh yeah, and my records are always correct. I get a copy of every office visit note and labs before I leave that same day. All you have to do is ask for them.

Terrible staff, rude dr, my records are incorrect (can substantiate this), He wont write a referral even though he hasnt ever treated my rare disease. My disease can come out of remission in many ways. Its not the adult form. You have no experience treating it. My labs have been abnormal for 1 yr now. I can substantiate my labs being normal for the past 20 yrs (can you?). Even my obgyn has noted my symptoms that you conveniently forgot to document. But I do have documentation. Avoid unless you are looking for very basic care for arthritis and well known diseases, and wish to deal with his attitude & nurses. He isnt practicing medicine to help patients, being that he is the first I have ever came across that wont write referrals. He would rather write prescriptions and not follow up/refer out with patient that had abnormal labs

Dr. Paul Pickrell is wonderful. He is easy going, really listens and is caring. You know how some specialists have a major chip on their shoulder (that they dont leave in their Benzs and Bentleys)? After youve said two sentences they categorize you, throw pills at you and shove you out the door? You leave with unanswered questions and are so frustrated you dont want to go back? NOT Dr. Pickrell. He told me my options, answered my questions and has supported my decisions. I have recommended him many times and will continue to do so. If you have a need for a rheumatologist, Dr. Paul Pickrell is the doctor to see.

Dr. Pickrell took care of my husband prior to his death from leukemia and was the most caring, kind and informative physician. Because of the way he handled my husband, I chose him for my own rheumatologist for treatment of the auto-immune disorders that I was previously diagnosed with. Dr. Pickrell was the first rheumatologist to CORRECTLY diagnose me. Even though there is not much he can do, he is very caring and empathetic with the way he handles his patients. He is funny and can relate. I would travel across the globe to keep him as my doctor if he ever moves areas!! Love him to death!

After struggling with chronic illness for almost four years with no diagnosis, Dr. P was the first person to not only believe that my symptoms were real, but to diagnose me and begin treatment. Hes realistic about my limitations, but I always leave his office feeling hopeful that one day there will be a cure for my condition, especially given the fact that hes working on several clinical trials to find cures for Lupus, MCTD, and RA. Plus, hes funny as hell. No matter where you live, Dr. P is worth the drive.

Please note that a couple of negative reviews posted are directed to the wrong person. The negative reviews are intended for Michael Pickrell, NOT Paul Pickrell. Paul has been my Rheumatologist for over 6 years and i promise you, it doesnt get any better. The man is awesome, knows his stuff, very thorough and considerate. A visit worth taking and a decision worth making... your joints will thank you. i have zero hesitation when it comes to recommending him (Paul).

Dr. Pickrell is the best hands down! After going to 2 rheumatologists with no success in my treatment for RA/Fibro/Lupus, he was able to find out why other treatments werent working. He is a wonderful person as well...treats you like a person and not a number. He is worth the drive to Lakeway. I call him a Dr. RA Rockstar. If you are going to live with these life altering, debilitating and painful diseases then dont settle for just any doctor.

Dr. Pickrell is just an outstanding physician and a wonderful, caring human being. He is a credit to his profession. Wish there were more accolades I could offer....he deserves high praise and deep thanks. Words are just not enough to express how grateful I am for his dedication to helping people live their best lives through better health and less pain. You are a blessing in so many lives, Dr. Pickrell. Thank you!

I had a very similar experience as Rebecca with Michael Pickrell last year. He tried me on a few meds, and when they did not help me he dismissed me, said he could not do anything for me and just left me hanging. I went for months with severe pain. I had only seen him a time or two before he tells me about a personal incident he had which I felt was very unprofessional. I would not refer my worst enemy to see him.

Ive been seeing Dr.P since 1999. He is absolutely the best professional caring doctor I have ever been to. He keeps abreast of all new medications on the market in his field. He is always willing to spend as much time with me as needed. I now live 5 1/2 hours from his office and I will continue to drive to my appointments.

Dr. Pickrell was the first doctor to treat my small vessel vasculitis instead of just trying to find the cause for it. He speaks to you as an equal and expects that you will be an active participant in your own care, capable of making informed decisions about your treatment options.

So happy my cousin referred me to Dr. Pickrell! Hes one of those rare, human being doctors, and he makes you feel like you are his only patient! Two slightly arthritic hands way up for Dr. Pickrell! I drive almost an hour and a half to see him, and its well worth it.

Dr. Pickrell is an amazing doctor who truly cares about his patients. Ive been a patient of his for over ten years. When he moved from Westlake to Lakeway I moved along as well. If you need a Rheumatologist there is no other better doctor than him!
