I have taken a few of my animals to this vet for years, due to how close it is to my home and because i didnt know any better. This vet will over charge you for EVERYTHING, unnecessarily so. They insisted I bring my 2 year old dog back in for her rabies vaccine, though when I checked her certificate that they had given me the previous year, it stated she had the rabies vaccine that would last her through 2012. Their prices are ASTRONOMICAL, to the point where I really dont believe they care about your pets at all, just what you are able to pay out for them. I adopted a kitten- they examined her thoroughly and then told me to bring her back in so they could fix her. I ended up bringing her to a shelter for the procedure, since they reduce their rates for fixing your pets, only to discover from them that she had already been fixed. This led me to believe that they were seriously going to open up my pet, just to stitch her back up again and charge me an arm and a leg for it because I wouldnt know any better. One of my dogs gets constant ear infections- Ive brought her in twice, asked them to just exam her and give me the medicine to treat it, and both times they charged me an extra $75. When I asked what this charge was, they explained that it was for the vet to "clean the ear". Cleaning the ear consisted of them taking a piece of gauze, and nonchalantly wiping her ear for half a second. This procedure apparently costs $75, and dont even think about asking them to take that off your bill. Ive been in the waiting room while theyve been dealing with other costumers and in one case, there was an older woman close to tears because they charged her $600 for what she was led to believe to be a simple and regular examination for her toy pup. A friend of mine is a vet in LA and he told me that my experiences with this vet was not normal- and insisted I find a new vet on the island. Since then, I have moved all my animals to Babylon Animal Hospital, just a couple of miles down from Southgate. They are friendly, honest, thorough and REASONABLY priced. I wish I could get back the hundreds of dollars I threw at Southgate, for no apparent reason. I suggest everyone finds a vet that they know will care for their pet because they care about what your pet means to you. Money should never take priority over your pets overall health and well being. I hope to save someone the frustration, aggravation and money I had to go through while going to this doctor.

The pricing there has gotten out of control. Waiting in hour for your appointment time is frustrating. On my dogs annual well care visit dr Mauro missed a walnut sized mast cell tumor on her leg. It was malignant. $300 for well care check is a little rich for my taste. She gave her her rabies shot a year early. As a client of hers since she was part of Dr. Winstons practice for nearly 30 years, I think she has lost sight of where she came from. Maybe if her waiting room was not packed and she had not rushed through my sweet dogs exam she could have caught The malignant tumor that would have cost my dog her life. I had no choice but to switch to another veterinarian. My dogs life was on the line & I lost faith in my Vet who treated 7 of my beloved dogs & cats over the years. (3 of my cats I had euthanized upon her examination (all assumed liver cancer) now wondering if she diagnosed them properly. All were under the age of 7). My new Vet caught the tumor before I could even tell her, performed a needle biopsy, diagnosed it as malignant, ($55 for the office visit, $20 for the needle biopsy, & $110 for all the pre-surgical blood work), & had her scheduled for surgery in less than a week at an affiliated hospital where they saved my dogs life & gave me a 20% referral discount. I saved 50% on flea, tick, & heart worm medications as well because my new Vet told me which ones I could get cheaper online vs the ones only a Vet could dispense. It saddened me deeply to have sever a 30 yr relationship because my Vet had become more about the bottom line than the care of my pets.

My 4 dogs have been going to Southgate Animal Hospital for almost a year and I wish I found them sooner. I been to many Hospitals just to give my dogs check-ups and shots and having 4 can be costly and confusing. I been to Animal Hospitals that had not updated my pets records or made it so confusing that they almost gave one of my dogs an extra shot, that could have made her sick or worst. Also I been to hospitals and only had assistants see my dogs because "THE Veterinarian" was too busy or not available. I also been to hospitals and was rushed and couldnt ask any questions or felt embarrassed when I could get a question in while being rushed out the door. Im so happy and relived that I found Southgate Animal Hospital. Dr, Mauro and Dr. Betts and the staff are passionate, professional and very approachable. They have open, loving arms and compassion for all animals and it shows. Sometimes you might have to wait a bit longer but its because they take their time with your furry loved ones and answer every question to the fullest. The office and rooms are clean and prices are affordable and knowing there is a plan to pay if needed is a peace of mind. Southgate Animal Hospital is highly recommended by myself, and my 4 fur babies.

The best vet Ive ever had! After going to many vets and being unsatisfied with their care I arrived at Dr. Mauros office after a recommendation from a friend. Dr. Mauro and her staff really take the time with your concerns and are so thorough and genuinely care about the well being of my dog. Unlike other vets they also dont take advantage of the fact that most people dont have much medical knowledge to try and make them spend more money unnecessarily. Been going there for years and have never had a bad experience to date! Very thankful for their office.

Weve been bringing our animals to Southgate for approximately 6 years now and have had nothing but positive experiences. The staff are always friendly and helpful and we LOVE Dr. Mauro. The passion she brings to her treatment of the animals is admirable and she is very friendly and is more than happy to answer any and all questions we have. I rarely post reviews of products or businesses, but cant recommend this animal hospital enough!

I think this is the best vet on Long Island! I like it that our doctor really loves animals and she is not afraid of our Rottie. She really knows her job too. Dr. Mauro is one smart cookie! The staff is very respectful and helpful. You know when you walk in that your pet is loved and well cared for.
