Ive been with Brandon Health Mgmt for about 3 years now. I see Dr. Joe Chiaramonte, who is also my husband and mothers primary care doctor. I love Dr. Joe because 1) he really listens to his patients, and 2) he is proactive when his patients complain of medical issues. When my husband complained of severe breathlessness late last summer, Dr. Joe ordered a litany of tests to be done with specialists and we finally caught the problem: My husband had blood clots in his lungs and was immediately hospitalized and placed on blood thinners. We are so thankful to Dr. Joe for his quick and thorough attention. The clinical staff is amazing, too. All of them are very warm and caring. Ive sent a thank you note to one woman on his nursing staff in the past because she was so helpful with a particular insurance issue. I wanted her to know her help was appreciated. But I have to give the clinic overall three stars because Ive had on and off success with the front desk. At todays appointment, I was told by one of the women in the front that my account was "frozen" because of two overdue bills from last year. (My fault there; weve been inundated with hospital & doctor bills because of the aforementioned hospitalization. I mustve missed those two bills.) She wrote down on a piece of paper the amount of $167 as the lump sum for both bills. No worries, I promptly handed her my credit card for the amount since we havent received our new 2016 HSA cards yet and the old one wasnt working. But when she handed me back my credit card and the itemized receipts I requested, I saw she charged $249.56. I asked why. She said she ran the amount for todays visit as well. Irritated, because I didnt authorize that. I didnt even know they could that! I learned today that their new policy is to retain payment the day of appointment. Ok, fine but she should have told me the *exact* amount to be charged to my card. I might have chosen another method to pay todays visit but I wasnt even given the option. Curiously, in the past Ive been charged after Ive seen the doctor, on my way out, at the discharge desk. Now, I guess they charge patients as soon as they come in, and if something changes during the appointment, they adjust the amount afterward in the form of a debit or credit. Im not impressed with this method. It can lead to an overcharge, which then takes the form of a credit on a patients account. I hate credits. I cant think of a more useless place for my money to be than to sit around in the form of a retail credit, earning no interest at that, and I have no access to it until the next visit 6-12 months down the line. Thats not smart money management. Even more frustrating, when I got home I noticed the receipt for todays visit has NO medical code/description of what the payment was for (because I was charged before I saw the doctor). Plus, that same receipt shows "cash" as method of payment while the other two show "credit card." All three bills were charged to my card in one lump sum, so what is going here? There is an excellent chance our HSA is going to take one look at this receipt and reject it. Im going to have to take time out to request another accurate receipt which shows the correct method of payment and a description of exactly what I was charged for. My irritation is that I felt like she just wanted to rush to secure the money and good customer service went right out the window. My dentists and GYNs front office staff give me much better (and kinder) service. So just be warned and pay very close attention to any billing issues with BHM. Review everything.
