Saugerties Animal Hospital is quite simply the very best and also the most affordable general veterinary practice I have ever taken my dogs to. In the past 50 years I have owned many purebred dogs and have gone to almost a dozen different vet practices in the Buffalo NY and Hudson Valley areas. My godfather was a well-known vet in Buffalo and I spent many hours helping him when I was a teenager. I am an informed dog-owner who has a good grasp of canine veterinary issues -- so I think I do have some good credentials to review the wonderful doctors (Howard Rothstein, Leslie Jackson, and Dr. Lang) who are now providing excellent medical care for my 2 much-loved Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Dr. Rothsteins outstanding knowledge of alternative medicine combined with standard Western medical methods proved us with 7 much-treasured extra months with our aged and very sick old dog when we first relocated to this area. He is also a brilliant diagnostician! Their staff are always professional and helpful when I call in for guidance or to make an appt. The doctors do not gouge their clients -- unlike many practices -- do not require extraordinary tests or treatments and are always willing to consider alternative methods if that helps reduce cost. I coordinate a lot of rescue dog care across the Northeast, so I see the outrageous bills that other practices charge for the dogs being fostered. The Saugerties facility is not fancy-schmancy and probably doesnt have the most state-of-the-art equipment, but the equipment is good enough and the caring and compassion is outstanding. Their egos do not get in the way when it might be helpful to take a dog to a specialist for a 2nd opinion or specialized treatment. Our community is truly lucky to have this remarkable veterinary clinic.

Coming from Long Island, where REAL veterinarians are easily found, back in 2003, I found this so-called veterinary hospital to be so sub-standard that it is impossible for me to convey how bad they were then, and I doubt theyve gotten any better. I am a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist. While in the waiting room with my elderly Whippet who could not stand on the floor (had to be held in my lap), I was made to wait for at least one to one and half hours while so called "emergencies" were brought through. During that time, I heard a man whose cat was being boarded complaining that every time he brought his cat in for boarding, it was given a rabies shot. WHAT???? I finally got up and left and found a real veterinarian. Recently I became aware that this veterinarian killed (lets not call it euthanasia, shall we?) a Miniature Pincher because he had TENDONITIS and his owners couldnt "deal with it". This is malpractice. I would look for another vet before bringing any animal companion here.

Dr.Rothstein is not only compassionate and well skilled but his fees are reasonable. This is the only doctor I know who you can call after hours if there is an emergency (and you have been there before) and he will talk to you about your emergency and help you assess if you need to be getting the e-room. If there were a human doctor like him I may actually have one. Whoever wrote in all CAPS the negative things I pity. Losing a pet is not easy but blaming this caring facility is just wrong. Dr. R had to put my friends horse down (when he did large animals back when) he cried with her and she will never forget that. He is a genuine healer. He is also an accomplished acupuncturist and his fees are affordable in this area too. I have seen dogs (when I used to go weekly at the same time) that one week dragging their hind legs and the next walking. I never believed in acupuncture for healing structural ailments until I gave it a try on my dog. AMAZING! and Dr. R is also.

My boyfriend and I were vacationing in Saugerties when we had to drive back to Brooklyn, pick up our cats, and drive back to our cabin in Saugerties due to an emergency. We thought we might have to bring the cats to a kennel when we got back to Brooklyn in a week, but knew wed have to update them on their shots asap if this was the case. We called Saugerties Animal Hospital and made an appointment for the following day. They were so friendly and upbeat! They didnt try to convince us to get the cats vaccinated for more than what they needed (weve experienced so many vets who try to push vaccines that would only be needed for outdoor cats - ours are indoor) or push us to buy different parasite prevention medication from the ones we use. They answered all our questions and didnt try to rush us out. They were very professional and understanding and I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a vet in the area.

Having moved from LI I sought a vet in the area and after trying several kept hearing Dr. Rothsteins name bandied about whenever I asked folks who their vet was. Finally decided to go and was with them for about 10 years. Unfortunately, I had an incident with one of the techs there and decided it was time to leave as I was very unappreciative of her behavior. Dr. Rothstein apologized but I was intent on leaving and finding somewhere else. Well, after searching high and low I thought I found a replacement but let me tell you, there is none in this area, thats for sure. After being away about six months I decided to call Dr. Rothstein and "go back home." I have been back for several months and I am so glad I am. There is no better vet in the Hudson Valley. They dont push unnecessary vax or treatments and really have your pets best options and health in mind. Truly glad I am back. =)

Anger management might be in your best interest. Your foul attacks are most revealing. Besides being hostile and nasty, you only expose yourself as an out of control ranter. Having known Dr. Rothstein since 1977, I can say with certainty that he is a devoted and dedicated person whose knowledge and expertise is vast as is the compassion every single animal under his care receives. He has cared for my dogs and cats throughout their lives (3 cats lived to be 17, 18, and just about 20) and I will have it no other way. In all my years of having pets I have known many vets and Dr. Rothstein is truly wonderful. Of course there are always persons who find themselves feeling differently but vile and hatefilled postings only demean them and whatever concerns or opinions they hold.

I wish Dr. Rothstein were my doctor. Really. A brilliant diagnostician, a compassionate being with great wit, and a versatile knowledge of both Eastern and Western medicine. He and Dr. Jackson both helped me nurse two cats through cancer. When I told them I didnt want to put them to sleep, they taught me what I needed to know to make them comfortable at home and supported me every step of the way. They sent me cards when they died...and made donations in their names to vet research. AND they are totally reasonable and understanding about payment. Im not kidding. Id trust Dr. Rothstein over any MD.

I have 4 cats and 1 dog. I have been going to this facility since 2006 and I have NEVER had a problem. Both Rothstein & Jackson are phenomenal doctors who have a genuine love for animals. Two of my cats drank some bad water in the basement, both of these doctors took SUCH care for my babies like they were theyre own. Because I had to bring them in so many times over a months time, they gave me at least 2 office visits absolutely FREE! Yes, sometimes you DO have to wait, but its SO worth it!!
