Let me say first off that I am a veterinary student, and in the past have worked at 4 different veterinary hospitals as a vet tech over the past 6 years. Commonwealth is one of them. I would not take the time to write something if I did not feel strongly about the Commonwealth doctors and staff. I know a good thing when I see it. I worked there for almost 4 years, and I consider the doctors, techs and receptionists there as my family. Working behind the scenes, I can tell you that the pets there get exceptional care. I know this because I have worked at other hospitals (which shall remain anonymous) where that is not the case. The doctors at CVH practice preventative medicine, and as such, many diseases or conditions are diagnosed before they become too deleterious to treat. I have seen the doctors come in early, and I mean EARLY, to accommodate clients schedules and stay late in order to make phone calls to check in on patients that may need follow-up care. I have never seen a doctor there rush an appointment. They are thorough, caring, and approachable. In addition, from an employee side, I must say that all of the doctors there treat their staff with respect. Trust me, that is not always the case at other facilities. The technicians and receptionists are valued and treated as part of a team. In my experience, this is rare. I have nothing but good things to say about the hospital. Dr. Hawk runs a wonderful facility, which is my opinion, is one of a kind!

I went here after a bad experience at Brookline VCA and I am SOOO happy I did. My best friend had suggested their practice because they were great with her cat and she loved the staff. My cat was seen by Dr. Pocher, a doctor from their sister clinic, and he was amazing with her. He listened to her long, complicated history and then spent a good chunk of time explaining his clinical reasoning for his recommended course of treatment and all the different options for medications etc. Because the issue required followup he also introduced her to Dr. Baron so that she would have a good baseline to work off of for the next visit. He called the following day with the results from blood work (unlike Brookline VCA who terrified me with stories of heart problems and promised to call me with the results the following day and I didnt hear back from the doctor, despite multiple calls from me, for 3 days). And their prices? A heck of a lot better than Brookline, at least for what I needed. Even if they had been more expensive I would continue to come here because its not easy to find doctors who are so thorough without doing unnecessary stuff. I cant find one negative thing to say about this practice - everyone is so professional and warm. Me and my cat are very happy to have found our home vet practice!

We took our 7 year old cat in September for her yearly checkup after moving to Cambridge from the DC area. We saw Dr. Hawk and he was amazing. He took time to really interact with Doris (the cat) and listened to us about any concerns we had. When I asked about her teeth he didnt try to push any products or services on me- he just said her teeth look good and not to worry. Doris is also big for a female cat, and Dr. Hawk was the first vet to tell me that she looks healthy, shes just a bigger than the average female. Every other vet Doris has ever been to has insisted that she needs to lose weight. It was nice to see a vet that was really paying attention to the cat in front of him, he wasnt just trying to make Doris adhere to the average. They also let me bring in a stool sample out of the litter box so that the wouldnt have to....retrieve...one from her. Overall, I would say that this staff is excellent and I think Doris got the best possible care with them.

Disclaimer: Doctors Denk and Pescatano, the former owners of the practice, were the best, most honest and caring vets around. My dog was a patient for 8 years and I only had amazing things to say about the practice. The new regime, however, is about one thing and one thing only: making as much money from you as they possibly can. They will push unnecessary tests, meds and repeat visits with impunity. It is so obvious and shameless; they try and scare you into subjecting your pet to unnecessary tests and medications. I have had this experience several times now and, when I was lucky enough to get one last visit with Dr. Denk before he retired, I learned that my dog was absolutely fine and not needing any additional meds/treatment/tests. I have heard the same stories from many different people -- all of whom are finding new vets!

I have had nothing but good experiences with this practice! My cats have been seen at this practice for a few years, and they have always been very helpful. The receptionist are all very caring and helpful when we come in, and our appointments are always seen on time. The doctor my cats have been seeing for a few years(Dr. Leonard) just left the hospital to move to CA, so my most recent visit was with Dr. Mercurio and she was just as friendly and knowledgeable. My cat had a very rare problem with his urinary track and the Drs. sepnd alot of time researching different ways to treat the problem. They all care about your animals and do everything they can to fix/rectify the problems. Over all, I would definitely recommend this hospital, I have had nothing but good experiences here.

Commonwealth Vet is a wonderful practice. I took my elderly cat there for four years and was very happy with the care she received. Dr. Baron is a skilled, compassionate vet who has a true gift for helping older animals. One night last winter when a blizzard was forecast, she called me after hours about some test results and went the extra mile to make sure my kitty had the medicine she needed before the storm hit. Even the assistants at the front desk routinely asked how my cat was doing when I called to refill a prescription. Caring for an elderly pet can be hard, but it helped so much to have a vet I totally trusted when I was faced with making difficult treatment decisions. The staff there genuinely understands that pets arent just "animals," theyre members of your family.

Ive been taking my second dog, Sandy to Commonwealth Veterinary Hospital since he was a young pup ( rescued from a shelter ). He will be eleven (11) at the end of November, but you wouldnt know it by the way he acts. Loves to run and occasionally, will pull me by the leash. He still thinks hes a PUP! The staff is very attentive to his ( and my ) needs. The care he receives is excellent. And no, Im not getting paid to say this. My first dog, Casey was also cared for by C.V. M. and lived to the age of thirteen ( 13 ), sadly passing away with cancer. Simply stated, if you want a knowledgeable, friendly and reliable place to have your dog/cat medical care, then Commonwealth Veterinary Hospital is the place to be!
