I had a very sick kitten who was completely unresponsive and limp in my arms, but no one would see me! I drove to three different clinics at 8am all over SE Portland but they all turned me away because I didnt have an appointment, and they were booked for most of the day. Then one of them directed me to VCA. VCA got me in immediately though they were already busy. I was sweating bricks over how much I knew this place could cost, but what could I do? My kitten was suffering. There was an elderly lady next to me whose bill came to $1200 for her dog. Is that how much vet services cost these days?! Anyway, while they were working on my kitten, a nurse gave me an estimate of what my visit was going to cost. $350. Not thousands, but OUCH. When I balked, Dr. Johnson was kind enough to give me a proposal: theyd do the tests one and a time until theyd found what was wrong and charge me as we went along. Seems like the way they should ALWAYS do it but hey. First test was for Parvo and was $66.09. Came back negative so we moved onto the next test for Ova/Par-G (worms, I guess) $53.00. Success! We discovered the kitten needed deworming medicine and anitbiotics and would likely live! So my bill, with an exam fee of $50, monitoring of glucose levels for $25.85, $5 for biohazard waste, and $50 for medicines came to...about $250. Still ouch. But I had a living kitten. So there you go. The facility was very clean, Dr. Johnson was really kind and she even called a couple days later to see how things were going, and they threw in a couple free cans of cat food. REVIEW UPDATE: 8/04/09 Originally I gave this place 5 stars with the above story. However, I spoke with a veterinarian friend of mine and she thought the prices were OUTRAGEOUS. Also, during my second visit to the clinic for kittens first shots, Dr. Both retested the kitten for Parvo and recharged me even after I told him wed already had the test before. They refunded the $$, but it made me concerned that he hadnt taken the time to read the kittens previous chart or to listen to me. So I took a couple stars back. Final word: Go here for emergencies, go elsewhere for regular vet care.

Worst Veterinarian experience Ive ever had. Brought my dog in on Sunday because he was vomiting repeatedly and had very bad diarrhea (which had blood in it). I also brought in a stool sample. After waiting for about 40 minutes, I finally got into a room. Technician came in after 15 more minutes and took his temperature. Another 20 minutes goes by and the veterinarian finally comes in. She had not even visually looked at the stool sample, never checked his lymph nodes, and told us the results of the stool sample would be back in 24 hours. We asked if it could be giardia (the dog has had this in the past). Doctor said she didnt know and would need to send out the stool sample. They tried to get me to leave the dog overnight for $1500. They wanted to take X-rays for an obstruction even though the symptoms I described to the doctor were nothing like an obstruction. They charged $75 to process the stool sample (24 hours for results they said). Ultimately ended up paying $350 for subcutaneous fluids, an exam, anti-nausea shot, stool sample, and antibiotics/probiotics. No call from the office on Monday. My fiance called them. No results in yet. So 24 hour turnaround was a LIE. Tuesday comes around. We call them again. They say they have the results but we have to wait for the doctor to call. Called again after 3 hours. Demanded speaking with the doctor. Got a technician, who said the results showed positive for giardia. The technician tried to push another prescription down our throats which we turned down. Do not go to this place if you value your pet or your money. Terrible service. Inconceivable prices. For an "emergency" vet, they sure did not act like my dog was an emergency when I brought him in or when I was anxiously waiting for the results. THIS IS ALL AFTER WE TOLD THEM THAT HE WAS DEFECATING BLOOD AND VOMITING EVERY DROP OF WATER HE DRANK. NEVER WILL EVER GO HERE AGAIN. I WILL RISK DRIVING FARTHER IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY RATHER THAN TRUST MY PET WITH THESE CROOKS.

I spent thousands of dollars here getting my pets seen for various procedures over the years here with no complaints. Everything changed when I brought my 18 year old cat in to be euthanized and I handed his body over in a heirloom quilt my aunt had made for me who is now deceased herself. I did not want to hand my cats limp dead body over to the tech, so after the deed was done, I kept him wrapped in the quilt. I told her I would pick the quilt up when I returned for his ashes, and she assured me that this would be no problem. When I returned to pick up his ashes they said they could not find the quilt. They said it was probably somewhere in the clinic and I left my number so they could call me back when they found it. I waited nearly a month with no call. I called them several times and couldnt get a straight answer. I showed up in person and I was ushered into an office where one of the upper management crew basically just shrugged her shoulders and told she had no idea what happened to it. I was heartbroken. Not only did I lose my pet, but I also lost something very special made for me by my aunt who I loved. I have no idea if a staff member stole it, if it as cremated with my pet, or simply thrown out in the trash. I seriously doubt someone would throw a huge, beautiful, handmade quilt in the garbage. If there is anyone out there reading this who has the quilt in their possession, I would take it back no questions asked. (I WOULD EVEN GIVE YOU MONEY, IF THATS WHAT IT TAKES) It has my name and several personalized phrases sewn into it from my aunt. It is very large, big enough to cover a queen sized bed. It has a lot of yellow in it, and it has animals all over it. Please do the right thing and give it back. I have worked in several animal clinics and we ALWAYS returned blankets and collars and whatnot back to the owners after euthanasia. The fact that this wasnt investigated, and I was so nonchalantly blown off by staff after being a loyal customer for several years is infuriating.

One year ago, I took my beloved 9 month old Kitty Diamond in here for a peaceful death. He had been battling Feline Leukemia and he could no longer eat and had suffered long enough. I told the vet I didnt want the Euthanasia to be painful. She said she would take him and put a catheter in his arm, give him a sedative and when I was ready give him his fatal injection while I held him. She took him and put the catheter in his arm and brought him back to me and left the room but did not sedate him. He looked like hed seen a ghost his eyes huge, he bumped the catheter in his arm and he started FREAKING OUT! Flipping around and I started screaming for the vet crying "theyre making it worse theyre making it worse!" An assistant came in and said the vet wouldnt be back in until I signed a payment agreement! Diamond then flipped out of my arms and my adult daughter caught him right as he was landing on the floor. She said " MOM LOOK AWAY LOOK AWAY!" and my Son tried holding me so I couldnt see. Then my daughter said, "hes gone Mom." It was 15 minutes before the vet came in and said, "oh did he pass on his own?" Pissed I said "Yes he passed on his own! He wasnt sedated and I screamed for you!" It was traumatic enough watching my innocent little Cat suffer through this disease as I was trying everything I could get my hands on trying to keep him well and then watch him not even get a peaceful death! His ashes were put in a box and they didnt even put the date of his death right! They gave me his pawprints in clay but waited until way after rigor mortis set in or something because it looked like pawprints of a Bob cat or something! VCA is all about the money and its not the first time Ive had negative experiences with them.
