When you first walk into Ziegler-Leffingwell EyeCare, you are presented with a three-page laminated document telling you about your rights under HIPAA and how Ziegler-Leffingwell will ensure that they are complying with HIPAA by keeping your medical details secure and by not sharing these details except where required by law. The nice décor makes it all seem like a legitimate operation, but it is all a lie. Ziegler-Leffingwell are very haphazardly collecting and storing your personal data and health information in violation of HIPAA. How is Ziegler-Leffingwell is in violation? When you sign up as a new patient or log in as an existing patient, their website is not secured against malicious activity. There are many steps to secure a website, but the most basic first step is that a secure website has “https://” at the beginning. Most websites are http, but secure sites (like your bank site) have an “s” at the end. Without this “s,” your data is not secure. You can think of the “s” as meaning that you have a lock on a Safe that has any information that you give to the website. Without the “s,” you are leaving your data unlocked and anyone (absolutely anyone) can read it. Put another way, it is like a doctor leaving your personal file on the waiting room counter at the hospital and then walking away. Anyone could just pick it up and read it. If you are not okay with a random person reading your medical files, then you should not be okay with how they are handling your information digitally. This violation of security protocols when combined with the fact that they are requiring that you fill in your medical information on their site means that they are in violation of HIPAA, which exists to protect you, the patient, and your personal information. Anyone who wants to do so can look at not only your health data but also can take your identity if they desire! This is a HIPAA violation. Exactly what data does Ziegler-Leffingwell ask for in this insecure manner and why is it a big deal? They ask for your past health conditions (heart conditions, psychological, etc.) and they also ask for your Social-Security Number. Why does Ziegler-Leffingwell ask for your past health? Understandably, it is because your eyes are a part of your body as a whole. If something is wrong with your eyes, there is a chance that it could have other health implications. As such, so long as they are being secure with your data (which they are NOT), then I see no problem with them collecting this data. But why does Ziegler-Leffingwell need your Social Security Number for an eye exam, especially when you’ve presented them with valid, comprehensive insurance? Is it so that they can look in a database and see your medical history so that they can better treat you? No, that is unfortunately not the reason. The health care system in the USA is not developed well enough for such a system to work throughout the entire country. This begs the question of why they need (and they say that they NEED it) your Social Security Number. The reason is not to protect you. It is for them. If you do not pay, they want to easily send you to collections for your medical bill. They are so short-sighted that they are prioritizing their own money over keeping your personal information safe. Ask yourself this: Why should you put your entire identity at risk while exposing your medical data to any person who wants to look at it just for an eye exam? The answer is that you should not. You deserve better. The two elderly ladies I saw coming in for an appointment don’t need to worry about some opportunistic individual taking their poorly secured personal information and making their lives miserable just because Ziegler and Leffingwell are not willing to invest in protecting their patients’ personal information. I can only imagine how they are handling your paper documents. Do not patronize this establishment if you value your privacy and your identity at all. Also, YOU ARE NOT LEGALLY OBLIGATED TO GIVE ANY DOCTOR YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER.

I was referred to Dr Ziegler for contacts and fitting as I was told he was the best for my astigmatism. My insurance did not cover the exam and fittings but decided to make appointment as I felt it might be a waste of money going to somebody else. After all the tests We discussed 3 options for me. .soft, hard, and hybrid lenses. With the soft he could get my vision to 30/20 and with hard 20/20. I discussed with him that I would prefer to go with the hard even though I knew it would take some getting used to. Dr Ziegler wanted me to go with the Toric soft lenses. I wore the sample pair for a week and they did nor work for me. I had to be within 5 " of my computer screen to be able to see. Night driving was impossible as I had so many light refractions that I went back to my glasses that were 3 years old. My insurance paid a percentage of x rays. Now I still have no contacts that work and I personally paid 330.00. They had me make another appt to follow up. The day of the appt I asked them if there was a charge for follow up since the contacts were not working! I was told YES..there would be a $125.00 office visit + refraction . I feel since the contacts were not working I should not be charged another office visit. I feel going to this Dr was a complete waste of money. I canceled my appt as I felt I did not want to shell out any more $$$ . I wonder how many more $125.00 + office visits would it take to get my lenses correct? Long story short went to another optometrist and can see like a hawk with new lenses.

I picked up new glasses and sunglasses before departing for Florida for the winter. While there I noticed that the new prescription for close work was not strong enough. I did not want to contact an eye-care provider in Florida. Upon my return in April I contacted Ziegler Leffingwell Eyecare to let them know of my issue. I went in for an exam and it was decided that the close-work prescription needed to be strengthened. They had both pair of glasses remade with the correct strength. The glasses now meet my needs perfectly. This reiterates the need to establish a strong relationship with your eye-care provider. They certainly came through for me and my dilemma. Thanks to Dr. Ziegler for his professional handling of my case.

Doctors Ziegler and Leffingwell provide an eye care experience that is second to none. They utilize a personal and professional approach to each patient. Along with their staff, they incorporate the latest technology to ensure that they provide the best vision care possible. Their lab offers a wide range of contemporary styles of frames and they arent satisfied until you are. Your vision is a precious gift so dont risk it with one of those many chain stores that sell frames, contacts and an eye exam by inexperienced, unprofessional employees. Why would you entrust your vision to anyone other than Drs Ziegler & Leffingwell? Its simply not worth the risk.

Excellent selection of frames, the newest technology in lens, state of the art testing, very knowledgeable staff, Dr. Ziegler was fantastic, clean and impressive office, so in summary my experience couldnt have been better. I recommend the Zeiss iScription lens and Blue Protect coating for your new frames. I cannot believe the clarity and detail in my vision since getting these glasses. My old frames and lens did not even come close to the fit and quality provided here. They also handle a large selection of Oakley frames as these are sometimes more difficult to find.
