PLEASE READ - Horrible Dentist STAY AWAY Went to dentist for cleaning and possible fillings. Walked out with a deep de-scaling cleaning done, 3 cavities filled and an INFECTION in my mouth where they injected me with novocaine. YES they caused an infection to occur. The Cleaning - absolutely painful after the novocaine wares off. My teeth are still ultra-sensitive since the cleaning. The hygienist really beat me up, my teeth and my gums. They do one side at a time, I didnt want to come back for the second one but I did it. Thursday June 11th - Fillings were the easy part in and out no problem until...the Novocain wore off. It hurt but not really badly so no big deal right? Saturday June13th - noticed the pain in my mouth getting worse. Thought nothing of it, dental work is sometime painful. It is what it is. Sunday June 14 - my right side of my jaw was hurting, like a dull throbbing. Took a pain killer and hoped it went away. Tried sleeping but my mouth was aching by night time. Took another pain killer to fill the pain and get some sleep. Monday June 15th - I went back because Over the weekend the pain in my teeth and jaw got worse. Dr. Bhalla gave me more pain killers and sent me on my way. Thinking I would be fine I walked out. I wasnt fine. I was in pain but Dr. Knows best so I let it ride. Thursday June 18th- by This time my jaw hurt so bad I tried to bite into an apple and my jaw got stuck and hurt so bad I couldnt bite it and I couldnt take the apple out of my mouth. I had to tear it out. SO MUCH PAIN Friday June 19th - went back in to see Dr. Bhalla and I wasnt happy. She told me it was TMJ and that she needs to send me to a specialist. So now I have TMJ??? Or is it an infection you gave me and its getting worse. She told me to be on ibuprofen 800 and do hot and cold compresses every 15 minutes and it should get better. There is nothing else she can do. Are you serious?!?!? Nothing you can do?? Sat - Sun June 20-21st - extreme pain in my jaw, cant eat without pain, cant chew, my entire right side of all my teeth and my jaw are killing me. Miserable weekend in bed. Pain killers take the edge off but the pain never really goes away. Started taking double dose of pain killers ever 4 hours, I can handle this until I see doc on Monday I was thinking. Monday June 22nd - unbearable pain, finally broke down and texted the doctor (she gives her personal cell phone number out to patients just in case they run into any trouble) no answer to my text messages ever, not one reply. Went back into dentist office and saw different dentist who said this pain must be caused by muscle bruising, its definitely not TMJ. Although muscle bruising shouldnt have lasted this Long and now he finds it weird. Did some X-rays, nothing turned up. He confirmed the pain was definitely cause by the injection points from Novocain shots (at the injection points). The substitute dentist gave me muscle relaxers. I actually had to beg for antibiotics seeing this is getting worse, what else can it be but an infection seeing its getting worse (Im not doctor I just have common sense). Ive been written off by this dentist and I cant believe it. They did damage, caused me unbelievable pain (which I am in excruciating pain right now) and told me they cant help me now?? I now have a doctors appointment with my primary care to see what he can do to help me as my dentist doesnt seem to care or want to help me. I am baffled at what has happened here as they knowingly caused my problems and left me in pain and dont care to try and fix it. Very disappointed in the service and dental work.

Not only did I wait over an hour to be seen by Dr. Oates, I did not leave for another two hours after that for a regular 6 month cleaning. I would sum up my visit to be similar to a high-pressured condo sales pitch. I have HMO insurance and was literally offered every service under the sun (which was not covered by my insurance). Most of the things I have never heard of, so I declined because I have had very healthy teeth during my 28 years of existence. Dr. Oates offered a service called "irrigation"--a high pressure water stream to clean along the gum lines. I declined because it was not covered in my insurance, but he offered it anyways free of charge. I have had braces, teeth removed, and oral surgery and I will tell you I have never experienced more pain. I sat in the dentist chair with tears running out because of the excruciating pain and not once did Dr. Oates stop and ask if I was okay. It felt as though the tarter scraper was being scraped along my gum line slowly--so painful. I left the dental office in tears because I was in such pain and felt exceptionally vulnerable since Dr. Oates continued the (optional) procedure despite my being upset. Dr. Oates also hovered at the front desk when they were about to re-book me, though after what had just happened I declined to re-book. This experience alone should show you the type of dentist Dr. Oates is. Not only is my comfort level during dental procedures completely ignored, but the professional advice of Dr. Oates cannot be trusted as there are obviously other financial incentives to providing dental healthcare. Making money is clearly more important than providing a sound recommendation for my overall dental health. There are so many other dentists out there, so dont waste your time or money. Also, a few months after fixing a cracked filling, my new filling is breaking down again. I asked for an amalgam because its stronger and thats what was in before and Dr. Oates said he hadnt done that since dental school, but they could still try. Seriously? The last time I checked, fillings (especially amalgam) should be regular procedures. This is concerning.

I go to the dentist to get my teeth cleaned. I want a clean place. I want an efficient place. I want to get in, get out, no hassles and leave with my teeth (and gums!) feeling clean. Ive been going here for just over 2 years now, and every experience Ive had has met those criteria. The "bonuses" are the friendliness of the staff (from front desk to the dentists and dental assistants). I laugh when I read some of the negative reviews. Maybe if it was **that** painful of an experience (literally), >YOU< havent been taking care of your mouth and "gentle" isnt going to get the job done {take some ownership of your hygiene}; and maybe if it was that painful of an experience (figuratively) you should re-evaluate your expectations. This place is great. They get the job done. Theyre friendly and accommodating. If youre not going here, you should be. (Plus, its by the beach which is an awesome place to be.)

Ive updated my review after Hermosa Smiles called me to let me know that the charges sent by my insurer were not an actual bill. The quality of care and atmosphere at Hermosa Smiles are a treat. The office is clean, the staff are friendly, and the work is done efficiently and with care. My teeth were x-rayed, cleaned, and I had a cavity filled in 1.5 hours. I would definitely recommend this office. Parking is difficult, so getting there a little early is a good idea.
