Ive had both excellent care at the dental school and also poor care. Just like at any other institution youll find people who delight in excelling in what they do and those who are indifferent to the quality of care they provide. Youll find people who are enjoying good days and people who are not. Remember too, the dental school is just that -- a school. Half of the students are above average and the other half are below average -- a no brainer. As for the faculty, some of them are at the top of their game and youd be hard pressed to find anyone better at what some of them are able to do. Also, because people are people, youll run into faculty who are there because of the ego trip. They are there because they may be smart and were able to impress the right people at the right time to be admitted onto faculty but are terrible at teaching and/or treating. Also, the practice of dentistry is a little behind the practice of medicine. Medical schools have had to deal with the issue of patient "bedside" manner much sooner and better than dental schools. If some of the dental school faculty run into a particularly difficult set of dental issues, it can be easy to blow the patient off, blame the patient or use any other commonly-used diversion tactic. It is difficult for a person bound up with ego issues to admit they simply dont know a solution or to admit fault if they goofed. Overall, I prefer the care Ive obtained at the dental school to private practice because there tends to be better accountability in a school/teaching situation. If someone seriously goofs, theres usually someone around who can step in and competently take over. Its harder to hide bad care or treatment with lots of competent students and faculty around. Eventually the bad cookies get taken out. Sadly, in the meantime, some patients will have bad experiences. But bad experiences can sometimes happen even with the best dental practitioners.

Medicaid? Dental emergency? Make sure they put a checkmark in Box 35! Otherwise it comes out of your $1,000 annual dental allotment. Check the DentaQuest website and/or call DentaQuest if you need help - CU Dental Schools Emergency Clinic apparently doesnt bill emergencies correctly, which ends up costing you. Other than that, the emergency clinic is great. They pulled the two teeth that were killing me, and Im grateful to be out of pain. However, when I went back for the "intake screening" so I could get my non-emergency dental work done, it was a complete waste of time. My dental student was really nice (I forget her name, she was a female dentist from Russia) but her professor didnt approve me. Totally weird, since I met all of the listed criteria to become a patient. Later, I found out that this particular professor never approves anyone to become a patient. Hes the Soup Nazi of the International Program. I was mad because I went all the way out there and wasted my entire afternoon for nothing. Serendipitously, my friend Patti recommended a fantastic dentist, Dr. Tariq Sawaqed. Dr. Sawaqed got my dental work done quickly and efficiently, without any Soup Nazi attitude. Hes on Garrison in Lakewood, way better location than Anscutz, and parking is easy and free.

When I 1st began going here, I still had a beautiful smile. I needed one tooth extracted, had a few cavities and needed one root canal. The damage done from their poor quality of work will cost tens of thousands of dollars to repair. First, they chipped a tooth they werent working on. Then they knocked a crown loose & refused to put it back on. The root canal they did was done so poorly, that tooth is now missing and so is the one next to it that didnt even have a cavity before. They ended up pulling multiple teeth and I now question whether they knew what they were doing. My reason for this is because I knew I had a cavity in a certain tooth, I repeatedly told them and they told me I didnt. Now that tooth is missing as well. So who knows whether the teeth they pulled needed to be! They take so long to complete procedures that it causes further decay. One root canal took nearly a year to complete! If you value your teeth, do yourself a favor, go elsewhere! I also question the over the top positive reviews on here.

For years my teeth had been bad. I have chronic pancreatitis. Over the years this did a lot of damage to my teeth. When I showed up at University of Colorado School of Dentistry I had 18 abscessed teeth. In all honesty I never thought I would really smile again. I went in as a emergency and got 6 teeth extracted my first visit. Right away they had me meet with a student who was in the denture program. They continued my treatment extracting all my teeth and then fitting me for the most amazing dentures ever made. I have been to many dentist with my kids and husband and everyone of them is amazed that I have dentures! They look and fit amazing. I never need any kind of adhesive to hold them in place!!!! I have no limits with them I can eat anything I want ( even gum, and apples). No one could have done a better job!!!!! The staff is amazing all the way around. I will never recommend another dental office!!!!!!

Last year I didnt have dental insurance and I needed an emergency tooth extraction and the University of Colroado School of Dentistry was my first choice. When I showed up the girls at the main desk were attentive and friendly, the resident who conducted the extraction was friendly, knowledgeable, and professional, and the assistant thoroughly covered all of the things I needed to do to heal. With that experience I decided to continue going to them even with my own dental insurance. I have found every member of the staff to be pleasant and courteous and the facility appears to be state of the art. I recommend the U of C School of Dentistry to anybody in need of quality dental care.

Went in for three extractions the day before yesterday, and had one wisdom tooth successfully removed. They refused to give an anxiety medication or Nitrous after letting them know I had a hard time with dentists, and I tapped out after the first removal because I could feel every minute of it and the Resident wasnt giving enough anesthetic. They then sent me home with nothing for pain, not even Tylenol and wouldnt give antibiotics for the abscesses in the two teeth I wasnt able to have removed. All in all the removal was successful and no complications thus far, but the treatment received was well below par. I wont recommend this clinic to others, and will not be returning.

Great staff, great care. Not the best if youre quite healthy and only need to get regular cleanings since there is a very thorough evaluation process. However, if you need extensive care this is absolutely the place to be. Experts are only a few steps away. Instead of seeing one dentist then being referred to a specialist several weeks out through a conventional dentist, here the student, teacher, and expert can all converge and come propose solutions together on the spot! Saves a whole lot of time and saves a lot of money. Very grateful to have found this place. We have found the cost is about one fourth of regular market cost.
