An old fashioned teacher, I rarely gave out perfect scores for academic efforts. In life, however, I have found it necessary to allow for a few exceptions. Happily, heres one concerning medical care: When Dr. N, my periodontist, found that I needed to be seen by a general dentist, he took out a list and spread it out on the table and his staff gathered around to consider the names. Suddenly, Dr. N himself made the discovery. “Dr. Fairbrother,” he exclaimed. “Perfecct fit!” He had a twinkle in his eyes as he spoke. I was taken aback and did not know what to think. That was then. Now I know exactly what Dr. N had in mind: Dr. Fairbrother is second to none, as a provider of medical care, in quiet competence, empathy and humanity. He knows and he cares.
