I have lived near Maryland Ave pet hospital for over 8 years and wanted to take my pets there for some time. I have a "family of cats"-mother,father and three of the babies that choose to live with me and have for over 9 years. I love them dearly, they are my best buddies! Some of them have had health issues from birth as well as allergies acquired during their lives.I was not aware that all cats can have dental and gum illnesses.I had one cat that had lost his teeth at a young age from a congenital ailment.Little did I know that the father of this group-my sweet kitty Lenny, would also become ill from tooth/gum problems later in life ,but he did.He had always been prone to colds and allergy exacerbations, and we had always been able to manage them at home. However,I didnt realize that teeth and gum infections can mimic upper respiratory infections and because of that I very nearly lost Lenny. He became extremely ill,had collapsed, and I called Maryland Ave pet Hospital in a panic. They set up an appointment immediately,in fact Dr.Stavros was late getting to another outside appointment to stay and see Lenny. I knew Lenny might need tests and medicine and since I had been out of work since April,I knew I couldnt afford much. The clinic was very nice about that and everything done for him was affordable and effective. They were also very kind but firm about taking better care of my pets teeth and gums and new updates on feline FIV.I must admit I always thought the teeth cleaning stuff was a crock to a point, but now I know it isnt.Lenny was a hairs breadth away from death because of a gum infection that most likely travelled to his brain. He still has some balance issues from that experience and recurring gum infections, however,Dr.Stavros and team have been non-judgmental and helped work out a treatment plan that fits my current sad,sad non-budget status.Lenny is healthy now and back to his old self and adjusting to his balance difficulties.I also had to bring in my oldest cat-the mom of my group- Brigid - as she was in the process of dying from complications of old age and life long health issues.Again,I was firmly but nicely informed that yearly exams may have caught some of these problems earlier, however, despite that, they were friendly, compssionate, and non-judgmental and together we all helped Brigid cross to the other side with dignity. I learned some important lessons about the proper amount and types of care that I needed to know-especially regarding teeth and gum care and my pets felt safe there and were well taken care of.I will be bringing my cats in to this clinic yearly (at least) as long as they choose to live with me.These guys were friendly, comforting and informative. Sincerely, Karen B.,Lenny,Brigid and the gang

Never in my life have I met a more money hungry, insensitive vet than here. I should have known when Dr. Stavros kept pushing me to get this procedure that cost over a thousand dollars for my cat on our first visit. It wasnt just a recommendation; he was extremely pushy about it. But what was so much worse than that was when my cat did not eat or drink for two days. I took her to the vet, and Dr. Stavros said her stomach seemed bloated, which could be a tumor. I told him that it was definitely not bigger than normal, that i was sure of that. He strongly urged me to have her x-rayed at the tune of $130 or so. My total bill was almost $500, the rest of the things were legit. I get my poor cat home, and she cant walk! She was walking just fine before the visit. Nothing happened to her during my five minute drive home. I get her out of her crate, and she is literally crawling on the floor! I wanted to cry. I called him, and he had no compassion at all. He would take no responsibility. I said, well can you please look at her. He said, okay, and set a time for me to bring her in the next day. I said, there wont be a charge for this right, and believe it or not, this inhumane, greedy jerk refused to see her for free. I was livid. Can you believe this guy? I explained how she was fine before the visit, and that he needed to see her for free and fix what he had done. His cold response was "well, people bring their cats in, then they get a cold, and they think they got the cold at the vet." I explained that this is not a cold, that she was walking fine before, and is now crawling on the floor... a little different. So again I pushed him on what happened during the x-ray or shots she received. He said "well, sometimes we have to stretch the cat out during an x-ray, that she probably already had arthritis." Fyi, that would be the x-ray she didnt need. The one he performed just to pad the bill. After I argued with him for ten minutes, he finally agreed to see her free of charge but that any treatment would not be free. At that point, I made the appointment but called back shortly after and cancelled because I didn’t want that guy going near my cat every again. I ended up taking her to Midtown Animal Hospital then and ever since even though it is about 20 minutes further from my house. It is worth it though since they seem to actually care about animals more than lining their pockets. I absolutely urge you not to take your pet to the Maryland Ave Pet Hospital under any circumstances. Oh, in case you care, my cat is able to walk now but won’t put any weight on her right foot and this happened like six months ago.

Dr Stavros & staff saved our cats life - twice! They are a wonderful group of people and treat us and our girl with tender kindness. My highest recommendations! We brought our cat into the clinic because she had lost both her sister and friend inside of four months and we wanted to get her shots and checked out so we could get her a new playmate. It turns out that she lost 2 pounds between getting her FIV vaccine and booster so they immediately knew something was wrong. Turns out she needed an emergency spay. Dr Stavros and staff kept me posted the entire time and checked in with us to make sure everything was well when we got her home. Two weeks later, we took her in to get her stitches out, but there were complications due to a previously unknown recall on the sutures used in her first surgery. The details are too graphic to share, but these wonderful people made every effort and succeeded in saving her life - again. Members of the staff stayed after hours without complaint and continued to check in with me during her second emergency surgery - as concerned with my well-being as with hers. Almost 3 months later, our 14 year old baby girl is alive & kicking, playing like a kitten and is happier than she has been since losing her litter-mate. Go to their website to check out the video of Bleach playing "soccer". I can not express the gratitude I feel for these people - there are simply no appropriate words. If you are in need of a vet clinic, want to change your vet clinic or simply wish to donate to their program for pets in need of financial assistance, you wont find a better place to take your fuzzy children.
