Recently switched from UNC hospital in Chapel Hill to Duke, and have been very happy with all the new specialists we have seen at Duke relative to the quality and responsiveness of care compared to UNC. We switched all of our care from UNC, with specialties including: Cardiology Gastroenterology (Allergist said it was GI, GI said it was allergist - terrible care across dept) Allergists (Allergist said it was GI, GI said it was allergist - terrible care across dept) Immunologists Dieticians Craniofacial Pediatric Surgery Neurology Genetics Urology (Our urologist at UNC was good, Dr. Sutherland, he repaired an injury caused by Dr. Sang Lee from UNC pediatric surgery, if you need pediatric surgery, Duncan Philips at Wakemed is the preeminent surgeon in the triangle, we wish we wouldve taken the advice of other specialists when we realized we needed a pediatric surgeon - son born with imperforate anus. We did get a consult with Dr Philips, after the initial injury caused by Dr. Lee, but worried about switching institutions mid procedure) Geneticist at Duke, Dr. Shashi, diagnosed in one visit what went diagnosed by UNC geneticists for 24 months. A rare genetic disorder, kabuki syndrome. Also, Duke offers full exome sequencing, not offered at UNC. I was thoroughly impressed with Dr. Shashis ability to accomplish this given the rarity of the condition. Furthermore, Kelly Schoch a genetic counselor at Duke, quarterbacks all of my sons care with all of the various specialists at Duke, amazing systems in place at Duke so all of the different specialist are aware of his condition. Contrasted with UNC, Duke physicians seem to read medical records prior to patient visits, and come to meetings ready to discuss elements specific to their patient and offer guidance and solutions relative to their patients specific condition. This is not the case at UNC, and all visits seemed haphazard and failed to meet even the basic needs of the patient - in short terrible quality of care. Duke University Medical has been a positive experience after a fairly turbulent first two years of life.

Dont be fooled by the "Duke" name. Worst ER Ive ever been to. Its a training hospital. They found out my father had a serve blood clot after an ultra sound & still made him walk back to the waiting room for another hour. The ultra sound tech was really fast and only looked at his thigh to knee and stopped. He walked back to the waiting room and was called in the back to draw blood. He questioned the need for blood work and a doctor came out of a room to inform him he had a clot and sent him back out to the waiting room. We spent a total of 6 hours in the waiting room & the doctor called it "quick" after we finally got a room. I was dumbfounded. My father repeated his story to the nurses and doctors, multiple times who didnt take the time to look at his chart. Had him self inject the medicine and sent him home without consulting a specialist like they promised. My father has a long medical history with multiple surgeries in the last couple years. Dismissed my concerns and sent him on his way. We tried calling duke to have them provide a specialist referral to see a doctor where he lives in Seattle. Duke denied the referral request because the doctors are outside of their network. Take that into consideration if you plan on going to this ER, you will be denied a specialist referral unless your doctor is in their network. Update - after arriving home in Seattle, he immediately went to his hospital where they provided another ultra sound. The Seattle hospital was very thorough and did an ultra sound on both of his entire legs and his stomach & found the clot was from his hip all the way to his calf. Since Duke stopped at his knee, they only said it was in his thigh. Will never think about returning to Dukes ER.

My family member suffered a brain aneurysm Jan. 2015 & had to have emergency brain surgery. Duke Raleigh stabilized her, then transported her by helicopter to Duke Univ. Hosp. Some of the nursing staff was better than others (the other nurses are not in this field for the love & care of human beings, clearly, its just a job). the actual neurosurgery staff (Dr. Zomorodis team) did an excellent job on her brain surgery procedure, but that was the only thing done right. after having major brain surgery, one of the nurse staff got her up to use the bathroom, left her alone & she fell FULL FORCE and hit her head on the hard concrete floor!!! forget the aneurysm & brain surgery, that fall could have "split" her head wide open & killed her! And not a thing was done about it. It has been over 1 1/2 yrs since the surgery & Duke has left my fam. mbr to fend for herself after major brain trauma & surgery. They offered her no follow-up care, or therapy. She has to hunt them down & call repeatedly for help bcse she is STILL experiencing chronic head pain. They will not take her calls or call her back. The ofc & med staff at Duke Univ. Hosp & Duke Ral. Medical offices are very unorganized and unprofessional. Some of the other doctors in the Duke organization are horrible, horrible, horrible. Money drives some of these individuals bcse they clearly could care less about human life. Specifically, Dr. Pietak who was rude and unempathetic to her very serious medical condition.Dr. Michael Bianconi was very cold & uncaring; bedside manner was null & void. Kathy Del Buono was very judgemental & biased.

How this hospital is still operating is a mystery. The experience I had dealing with this place while family was in the hospital cannot be put into words. They dont clean, almost all of their nurses are incompetent, they left vials of drugs sitting in the room for several days (shouldnt that be locked away? Yes...), they treat family like garbage ("we dont provide family members pillows or blankets when staying with the patient overnight") and if you want to get something to drink, they dont have any family break rooms like every other hospital. You can go use their vending machine that doesnt work and pay for your diet coke. They wont validate your parking... this is outrageous. Youd think they would go broke if they dont charge you $8 every time you leave the parking garage. I spent the night every night for 6 days because I didnt trust their staff to actually provide medical care to my family member. Be prepared to track down the nurse every hour when meds are needed. After you tell them to get the meds be prepared for the nurse to never end up coming so youll have to go hunt them down again. I really dont trust their staff. From the numerous lawsuits from malpractice (i.e. Jessica Santillian), to fraudulent overcharging (i.e. recent settlement with State of NC), to my own experience, I would avoid this place like the plague. Im seriously in shock they are somehow listed as a world-class hospital. Everyone I know warned us about duke, but we thought they were exaggerating. 15 years ago Duke was not run like this, or if it was, I dont remember it.

Horrible billing and administration. After calling (and being put on hold for a ridiculous amount of time) I finally arranged to make payments for my daughters bill. The woman was nice, but unable to give me mychart set up information. I called back on 9-15-14 to set up the (mychart) account so I could make my first payment. After being put on hold again and speaking to a customer service rep I was informed that she could not help me (not allowed to give the information out-really?) So I was then put on hold again. I spoke with another woman (Faydra?) who had horrible vernacular and poor listening skills. I repeated spelling for her. She then asked me to verify all the same information I just told the other woman. Why? This is wasting my time. Then she asked me to verify my email. I informed her I did not have one on file, and she realized I was correct. Cant she see what is on the screen in front of her? I them refused to give an email out. She then refused to help me. SINCE WHEN IS IT REQUIRED TO HAVE AN EMAIL to get service? When I told "Faydra" I cant pay my bill because she would not help me, she gave me attitude. I then asked for her supervisor. She put me on hold again. After a few more minutes she came back on the line and said she would try to transfer me, whereby she hung up on me. Way to go Duke. World class health care, third world customer care. All this technology and yet you cant give me basic information so I can pay you? #Dukemajorfail
