Fair Warning, long but true positive review: You cannot find a better physical therapy experience in the region than you will have with Direct Performance. I was fortunate enough to find Steve following surgical repair of a hip labral tear. After 2 years of misdiagnosis in Virginia, I was able to have the diagnosis made and the surgery performed by the best hip surgeon in the world in Colorado (Dr. Philippon) and spent 2 weeks at the renowned Vail Howard Head Physical Therapy department post-op before returning to VB. This surgery has a somewhat high complication rate as compared to other orthopedic procedures, with many of my surgery co-horts re-do procedures from previous surgeries due to scar tissue. I came home and had a TERRIBLE experience with another local PT group and became so painful in my first week home I had resigned myself to returning to Vail for further post-operative care. Co-workers of my husband recommended Direct Performance and Steve SAVED the results of my hard-fought and expensive surgical repair. Within 2 visits Steve had my pain under control and my healing process back on track. Unlike the other local group, Steve was not overwhelmed and was on-board with my surgeons intense post-operative protocol. The level of care Steve gave me was absolutely on-par with the best in the country. As my healing progressed Steve challenged me to regain the strength I lost, was honest with when/where my limitations should be, and was supportive of returning me to a fully functional, athletic, and pain free state. I consider Steve a friend and am forever grateful that I can move without hurting because of his expertise. Whether your issues are acute, chronic, mild, or severe, you could not be in better hands than Direct Performance to help return you to the level of health and activity that you want.

Following a car accident, I had sharp, shooting pains in my neck, couldn’t turn my neck to one side, and had limited range of motion and pain in one shoulder. I tried for months to heal my neck and shoulder myself with lots of ibuprofen, a TENS machine, and home exercises that the doctor gave me. The doctor recommended physical therapy, and specifically recommended Direct Performance Physical Therapy. The physical therapists at Direct Performance are extremely knowledgeable, professional, and caring. They are respectful of your time. Your 45 minute session starts and ends on time, so you can plan your physical therapy around your schedule. They spend the entire 45 minute session working with you. They are not running back and forth between several patients. I am very pleased with the results. Stephen McKenzie is an excellent physical therapist. The physical therapy treatments he provided, combined with teaching me the right exercises to do, made a big difference in alleviating my pain and improving my range of motion. I only wish that I had known about Direct Performance Physical Therapy earlier and had started going there sooner. I also wish that I had known that you don’t have to go to a doctor first in order to go to Direct Performance Physical Therapy. I highly recommend Direct Performance Physical Therapy, whether you need treatment for acute or chronic pain, athletic enhancement or injury prevention, or post-op rehab.

Excellent! I’m new to running, and have been experiencing all the normal aches and pains that go along with it. Over the past few months, I’ve been working through pain in my hip flexors, knees, shins and ankles (pretty much everything). I knew I needed to go see a doctor before an injury popped up, but didn’t want to be told to just “stop running.” Direct Performance PT was recommended to me by my running coach. I made an appt, and went in for a consultation on Jan 5th. Turns out that the majority of the pain I was experiencing was from a lack of mobility – I didn’t have the full range of motion in my hips and ankles to run – hence the pain – so my knees, etc were compensating. The analogy Dr. Jake McCrowell used, was that it was like I was “driving with the parking break on.” Makes sense… so he set me up with 5 sessions, with homework in between. I’ve been to 3 so far. In just the past 2 weeks – I have greater range of motion in my ankles and hips – and, more importantly, zero pain! The test was my long run last night – no hip or ankle issues at all. I’ve gone from a 12-13+min/pace to 10:30-11:40min/pace and getting faster... literally, he took the breaks off. If you’re having issues, or think something may turn in to an issue… go see Drs. Jake and Steve… they’re excellent! They’re both athletes, and know exactly how to target (and fix) the root of the problem.

Beyond impressed with Direct Performance PT! Dr. Brian is amazing - he listens, provides feedback, helps you set goals and works with you closely to perfect your strength, mobility and mechanics in a series of exercises geared toward helping you get back to your pre-injury self. The physical setting of having Direct Performance using the same space as Functionally Fit was also a huge part in my recovery - having all sorts of equipment that I use on a daily basis available to use as part of my rehabilitation was not only a tremendous physical asset, but it was also a huge mental asset. Brilliant partnering! Dr. Brian also suggested I try dry needling after my surgery...this was a huge part of my initial recovery. Dry needling is not something I would have even thought to seek out for myself - but, Dr. Brian is truly an expert in his field and knew it would allow me to advance in my recovery. Cannot thank Dr. Brian & Direct Performance enough! On the administrative side - Direct Performance is the ONLY medical facility that I know of where the doctors are involved in all aspects of the business. If you call or email the office - you will speak directly to one of the doctors. So refreshing! Very appreciative of the thoughtfulness that was put into the Direct Performance business model!

I have nothing but good things to say about Direct Performance PT! As a lifelong athlete with a history of many injuries, I was seeking a physical therapist with an individualized approach to my needs with the same goal in mind as I had- rehab my knee (from my 4th ACL surgery), and help me to be an even better athlete than I was before my surgery. Jake did EXACTLY that. Each session was tailored to my needs and abilities, and Jake was willing to provide me with homework that I could do outside of our sessions to guarantee my success with his rehabilitation program. I have been to many physical therapists throughout the years, and unfortunately every place seems to be the same- you work with your PT for the first 15 minutes doing basically the same stretching/exercises every week, and for the rest of your session, your PT is trying to juggle you with their 3 other clients, not really having the time to assess how effectively you are carrying out each exercise. At Direct Performance, you get the 1 on 1 attention that you need to be successful. I am incredibly grateful for their approach and commitment to my success!

So Ive had left shoulder issues since May (Thanks, Fran!) that Ive been allowing to play out and "heal" on its own. At the same time, my confidence in some overhead movements have felt unstable even when theres no pain. Thanks to my buddy, Jake McCrowell at Direct Performance Physical Therapy, hes able to pinpoint the neuromuscular issue, treat it and gave me some physical homework to do for the next few days. In my first visit, I have felt improved range of motion and no pain. Though insurance could pay for it, I used my HSA which was much cheaper. If youre in the Shore Drive area and have a nagging athletic issue you want resolved, go see these guys!! It has been a week since the initial treatment and when I wrote the paragraph above and I tested my shoulder out yesterday. I did some snatch reps at 75% (1 RM) and then did a workout that consisted of numerous overhead squats. The shoulder has definitely improved in range of motion, stability and also an increase my confidence.
