This place is terrible on many fronts. Full disclosure: I didnt stay at the hospital, but I had a family member who did, and my rating is based on my own experience of talking to staff, social workers, mental health professionals (nurse practitioner, physician assistant), and many visits to the facility. Its readily apparent the place is poorly managed. It looks rundown, like no one has given an ounce of pride to the establishment in a decade or two. Getting in touch with someone with some authority (social worker, doctor) is like trying to get in touch with an elected official. And releases were signed, so its not as if the hospital was protecting the patients privacy, theyre just extremely hard to get a hold of. The place looks like a psychiatric facility youd see in a movie. Its pretty dirty, rundown, with broken fixtures. The payphone the patients use to call family and friends are terrible. They crackle and distorts the voice like youre talking to an android. It happens, phones breaks, but the fact its not repaired is symbolic of the place as a whole. Ill even give the facility the benefit of the doubt and assume the phone broke the day my family member was admitted, but thats still nearly 3 weeks. The thing I was most surprised about is the philosophy of treatment of the hospital. Most of the time the patients are just sitting around, especially on the weekend when theres no therapeutic activities happening. During the week they have a visit from the doctor (nurse practitioner or physicians assistant) for a few minutes --my family member never saw an MD or DO. Theres also the occasional visit from the social worker. The most frustrating thing about the facility is the lack of communication between all of the mental health professionals and staff. One person will say hes not taking medication; another will say hes on medication. One person will say the medication hes on will takes weeks to have a desirable effect; someone else will say the medication should work immediately. We personally witnessed a form of psychological abuse taking place during visiting hours. There was a patient having a breakdown, which consisted of screaming and throwing objects around. There was a couple staff members who were laughing at the patient; they found it amusing. This was even more disturbing that they were laughing in front of visitors --if they behave this way in front of visitors, how do they behave behind closed doors? To be fair, however, there were some kind and dedicated staff members. If you or a loved one has a choice, I would avoid this facility at all costs. Im aware that sometimes there isnt a choice. If you dont have a choice, just do your best to advocate for yourself or your loved on because this place isnt going to have your best interest in mind. Its like a cold, dark factory on its last legs. Theres this creepy detached feeling about the facility, and the only way I could describe it is like they dont think of their patients as human beings (a person with a name, history, good qualities and bad qualities), instead its like they think of the patients in terms of their patient number rather than their name (patient 12345-6, diagnosis X, allergic to Y).

My 18 year old daughter went there and it was horrible. She was left terrified surrounded by middle aged men and some really deeply disturbed people, sharing a room with an angry crack addict and nobody saw her for days!!! The psychiatrist was not there. She had no treatment...it was like One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. I was fighting to get her out. It was like a scam. They said something about when your admitted on a Monday or something about certain staff not being there and unable to be evaluated for release until Friday. It is seriously horrible and needs to be shut down. It was also dirty and broken down looking. Talk about depressing and my daughter said they just kept slinging more mattresses in rooms to take more people in. They dont care about patient well being. I was fighting all week to get her out and witnessed an elderly couple who were trying to get their daughter out. Like me they were never able to talk to the doctor ever!!! He never or seldom seemed to be there.

I went here myself and my opinion is that the hospital needs working water fountains. Better food because I myself threw up on several entrées. The staff could be more aware of patients needs. And also more hospitality needs to be shown to patients. I was allowed smoking breaks but was given Indian reservation cigarettes that gave me a migraine I believed were probably laced with a chemical that caused the reaction. The hospital also tried to overdose me on the medication I was taking for my condition after I informed them I already had taken equivalent amount. I had to take a needle and the person who administrated the shot shoved the needle in my arm with full force. Then a lady took my blood and did the same exact thing. I was placed in the legacy unit. The unit is to small and has no fresh air break unless you are a smoker which I believe is unfare.

Hard to get a hold of social worker and people who are supposed to help you get better to leave the Hospital. One of the people I stayed with found a bug in her good. Another guy three threw up after eating the food. On two different occasions. The did not watch closely a young woman on suicide watch, as she almost drank cleaning liquid. Other patients stopped her. Some of the staff are great!!! Very caring and open and down to Earth. Others lie and dont listen. On the other hand, I see how difficult it is/can be for the psychiatrists and social workers.

My daughter was hospitalized at Brunswick Hospital. I must say it was well worth the commute in comparison to her previous stay at the hospitals in the city. Dr.Khan and Dr.Salvo were extremely instrumental in helping my daughter overcome her deep depression & anxiety. This is has been by far the happiest I have seen my baby feel in a long time . A+ to this small private facility in Long Island. Without a doubt I recommend anyone seeking treatment for their teenagers to have them treated at this hospital .

This hospital was awful. The doctors dont care and the social workers are beyond useless. The nurses are more concerned with paperwork than patients. I was there a week and only saw my doctor ONCE. They all ignore you and violated more than a few of my patient rights. They are neglectful and abusive to those who dont speak up. This place needs to be investigated and shut down, or it needs a major overhaul. DO NOT send anyone you care about there.
