Memorial Hospital Grievance Letter: Dr Todd Thompson/Neurology, has left me in extreme pain after my prescription pain medication (taken exactly as prescribed, 1 every 4 hours) needed a refill, leaving me in pain from Cervical Radiculopathy, C7 since last Friday, December 2. This is unacceptable and unfair. Patients like myself should be allowed to make autonomous decisions when appropriate, and the principle of justice should guide doctors to evaluate and alleviate pain in a nonprejudicial and nonjudgmental manner. Your ethical duty to relieve suffering is clear. If you dont provide adequate pain relief, you risk losing our patients trust, and, ultimately, our patients (See Google reviews at bottom of this e-mail, Im not alone). Beginning on 12/4/2016 my second surgery with Dr Thompson for C7 $55,000 surgery was approved by Cigna, yet Dr Thompson stopped giving me medication without any "warning" or discussion, and claimed, on a Friday (my medication ran out on Saturday: TAKEN AS PRESCRIBED), was flat denied. Leaving me in terrible pain. Dr Thompsons office claimed, "We are not a long term pain clinic." What? Im not seeing him for LTC, I require surgery, as 2 MRIs have shown, a very serious surgery at that. Not offering, "Heres 2 days worth for the weekend, please contact your primary car for your next refill." Or "Heres only enough pills until your surgery, and since it has been approved by your insurance, lets manage your pain until that day." Or "Heres some non-opioid options for pain relief" Or how about even offering the SLIGHTEST help. Such as pertinent information to maximize my autonomy in making decisions about my diagnostic and treatment modalities? No. The secretary was rude and could care less about my discomfort. Any such behavior would have sufficed, but sadly, none of that happened. Further, I was told I could NOT take Aleve, Tylenol, Advil, Ibuprofen or ANYTHING similar up to 4 weeks BEFORE surgery, because it thins the blood and I could bleed out during surgery. What am I supposed to do? Go back to your ER to get on a morphine drip, like the last time this exact same issue, albeit a different vertebrae. I was on morphine for 5 days! I DONT WANT TO BE ON MORPHINE! Its Christmas, I want to be home, but soon, I may have no choice. The pain is great. Im not seeing Dr Thompson for said, "long term care." I have called Terri Baxter 8 TIMES over the last 3-4 weeks, to schedule a date for surgery. I want surgery, as frightening as it is to get your throat slit open, not pills. When youre waiting for the insurance to approve said surgery, doctors, especially specialists and surgeons, should be sure their patient is comfortable until surgery. Thats elementary. His Ethical Duty was to to "Relieve Pain and Suffering." My surgery was approved by my insurance, and confirmed in a letter I received yesterday! I was called today 12-6-216 and told my medication would not be refilled. Id like to know why? This has not been even a decent experience, its been difficult on me, the patient. I went to Memorial Hospital Colorado Springs; for spinal surgery with Dr Todd P Thompson. #CervicalRadiculopathy at C6. Past surgery seemed successful, only 5 months ago. When the same pain came back, I knew what was wrong and toughed out NOT going to the ER. Please note my records: You will quickly see that I am not some Dr & ER visiting "pill popper." I do NOT appreciate being treated as such. Before my surgery 5 months ago, for virtually the same surgery, one vertebrae lower (SAME SURGERY: SAME PAIN), I had never, not once, ever visited your ER. NEVER! I did, however, get married in Memorials ICU in 1999, and have had 3 children at Memorial. One of your ethical obligations as physicians is beneficence - "doing good," or maximizing the best interests of patients. Applied to a specific clinical situation, these benefits are weighed against any risks, which involves the ethical concept of nonmaleficence, or "do no harm."

After a year of injections in my back and physical therapy, I eventually was referred to UC Health Neuroscience for surgery. I waited an additional 4 months for my Initial Consultation. I showed up to my appointment 30 minutes early, even though I had already pre-filled out all of their paperwork prior to my arrival. When I checked in I was told that I needed to reschedule because the Doctor was out of the office that day. I asked what had happened because Ive been waiting 4 months for this. She told me they has called me and left a voice mai. I opened my phone, put it on speakerphone and played their message confirming my appointment. She said all she could do was reschedule me and the soonest available appointment was July 12th, another month and a half! 6 months after my original referral! Im frustrated I has to wait 4 months to begin with. Im disappointed I couldnt be seen when I was scheduled to be seen. But most of all Im extremely disgusted that the woman behind the desk showed absolutely no empathy to my situation, and was completely rude when I tried to express my urgency to be seen as soon as possible. She never apologized for the cancelation, and didnt seem to care the slightest because "it wasnt her job to contact me and cancel". Im assuming they will not be keeping my follow-on appointment in July either, since I just received my medical records in the mail from them, without an apology letter or note of any sort.
