Dr. Benz was recommended to me and was a good dr. when I first saw her taking time and doing an overall assessment that was comprehensive and thorough. I first saw her when she was with the Gunn Tobin womens center. I found out I was pregnant, but she does not practice ob so I had to have a different dr. deliver the baby. I went back to her after that. By that time she had opened her own practice. I called to set an appt. and make sure my ins. was accepted. I had a very detailed conversation with the appt. desk verifying the ins. etc. at no time was it told to me that their office charges a separate new patient fee of $165. I received a bill after my visit and could not believe this as I had made it a point to make sure my visit was covered. I know some dr do charge a new patient fee, but I have never seen one so steep. I feel it is outrageous and greedy to charge this much to put someones name in the computer, especially for a dr. a woman sees once a year and who spent all of 10 minutes with me. The appointment was nothing like the first time I saw her, so I guess that was just the womens centers requirements. If I had known this when making my appt. I would have certainly chosen a different provider. Now that I have seen others reviews here, I agree that she orders a ton of lab work. In my case she ordered labs and an ultrasound, but I never went to get either done because of the price tag. I encourage everyone to file a complaint or grievance with your insurance company and make them aware.

I had similar experience as well. In 2016,my two teenage daughters and I went to Dr. Benz for a routine physical. Were in excellent health. We have no past history of any health problem. The doctor ordered lab work. I didnt think too much of it. A couple of months later, I received the explanation of benefits (EOB) from our insurance company, Anthem Blue Cross. I was astonished those ridiculous amount of lab work. Dr. Benz, who is part of our insurance plan network, sent us to LabCorp (is also in-network lab) for our blood work. However, Boston Heart Diagnostics billed Anthem total amount of $11,061 ($3,636/$3,636/$3,789) I returned to the doctors office and asked for an explanation. I was told by a staff that I dont have to worry, I probably wont be billed for that. I also contacted Anthem to question the EOB and I learned that Boston were billed for more complicated version of the tests, many were medically unnecessary. There is no credible reason to be ordering all those specialized tests for a routine physical. Dr. Benz, she is a gynecologist, not a cardiologist. I wonder why she didnt send us to a cardiologist if, indeed, we had heart disease. And I wonder why the doctor had ordered more tests even after we stopped seeing her. Ive lost all respect for Dr. Benz. I cant adequately describe how disgusted I am and how affected me deeply. It will take some time for me to be able to trust any doctor.

I had gone to Dr. Benz for years and had no issues until recently. The last time I visited, she highly recommended that I take a series of test because she was worried about a particular issues. Come to find out, these "tests" are in conjunction with a hospital across the country and had an exorbitant price tag. When the results of these "tests" came in, I realized that they were completely unnecessary and frivolous (which was verified by another doctor when I asked for a second opinion). They had nothing to do with the issue that she cited and I was stuck with the bill. There was no transparency regarding the potential cost and the actual purpose of the tests and I feel that her office is taking advantage of patients and “up-selling" them on completely unnecessary procedures. When I called the office to explain this, they turned it around on me and said stated it was my fault for agreeing to the tests, even though the Doctor did not explain that they were not routine nor that they had the potential to be very costly. They were completely unhelpful and I think that this borders on malpractice. They have broken my trust and I am extremely disappointed. I will not be returning.
