Mr. Patrick Downs, CEO September 12, 2016 Coral Gables Hospital 3100 Douglas Road Coral Gables, Fl. 33134 Mr. Downs, My Mother in Law, XXXXX XXXX was admitted to your ICU on September 6th after experiencing an event in your emergency room. After our experience we’re not sure how this hospital still has a license to practice and we will spread the word that will reaffirm what people already know about the reputation of this hospital. My Mother in Law came in by private ambulance for having trouble breathing. The ER gave her a medication to help open her lungs and it sent her in to fibrillation. After receiving this medication she complained to the staff that it was burning and pressure in her chest radiating to her jaw. Even a lay person would know that this is a possible symptom of a heart attack. They ignored her and told her it was just the medicine without checking on a monitor what was occurring with her heart. That was because they never hooked up the 72 year old patient to a cardiac monitor which should be standard protocol for any senior having respiratory difficulty. After my wife arrived in the ER 2 hours later and got upset that Ms. XXXXX was being ignored, they did an EKG and the rush began to start giving medicine to try to convert her rhythm. The professionalism of the employees in the hospital leaves a lot to be desired. You have transports pushing patient on a stretcher, speaking in Spanish out loud, like they were in their backyard having a beer with no consideration for the patient in that stretcher and what they may be feeling or experiencing. The entire staff should be trained and have continuous training on how to handle patients and be more sensitive to their needs. Imagine if you were that patient, feeling horrible and these employees are speaking out loud as you suffer on that stretcher like you don’t exist of matter. In the ICU unit that Ms. XXXX has been in for a week has to be one of the worst I’ve been in in my 51 years of life. You have equipment thrown around the room that was previously used on other patients sitting there beeping and causing irritation to the patient trying to rest. As you are aware, after equipment is used, it should be returned to the Central Supply Unit to be cleaned, checked, charged and be ready for the next patient that may need it. Not thrown on top of other equipment, dirty from its last use and then placed on the next victim without their knowledge. Unfortunately that is not my last story from the Intensive Care Unit since while there, calls to the nurse on the remote doesn’t get you help. Ms. XXXXX is having difficulty breathing which would be obvious with a bout of double pneumonia and how does Coral Gables Hospital help her, by providing one of the worst A/C that a hospital should have! Please see the attached photo from the air intake in her hospital ICU room. (no photo but this intake was full of dust to the point that 1/2 inch holes were clogged with the dust). Your facilities Director should be fired for not catching this! This is unacceptable and will be notified to the correct governing bodies since we have the documentation to prove this. From what I see, you nothing has changed! You should be embarrassed by the way this hospital looks where you have visitors that could run this organization better that most of your staff. We are not looking for anything from you in regards to this letter, but you are surrounded by a great City in Coral Gables and you should strive every day to run this hospital with some class that the neighborhood affords you. You should be ashamed of how this place looks and the reputation that you allowed it to have. Best regards, AG 9/30/16: Updtare

I have never been treated so poorly. When I arrived I was quickly triaged and moved to a room, I got there at 10:30pm and I was not seen until 2am that I got upset and I told my nurse I was leaving because not even a Dr. has come by to check if I was in pain. Sure enough, he showed up and said he was sorry its been too busy, mind you the ER was completely empty. I went ahead and explained my symptoms and without even performing a short. basic physical exam he went back to check my blood-work and discharged me with UTI and some gastroenteritis salmonella which was at best a poor assumption as my infection is not any longer a UTI, but a kidney infection. I was in total shock. I had pointed out to the Dr. I came from Cuba the day before where there is a significant outbreak of Dengue fever and Leptospirosis. Of which both I had symptoms. He didnt test for a single one of this possible life-threatening conditions. I am still deteriorating, running a fever, in pain and I will probably have to go to another Tenet facility where I will have to deal with some careless personnel that would rather judge than treat as I heard many nurses in the halls talking loudly about their patients, violating all kinds of ethic rules and HIPPA guidelines. My wife, which is an RN for Tenet was very disappointed as in her hospital she has never seen this kind of irrational behavior. I would never step again in such a low-class hole nor would I recommend this hospital to any human being. They should be treating animals which will probably stand a better chance than a human been for a proper prognosis. I really hope my illness does not progress into what I fear it is and I dont have to visit another ER with a life-threatening condition because of the negligence of these people. This ER should be completely recycled. Their unprofessional-ism was overwhelming. Never seen such a horrible place! Not even when I used to live in Cuba. THE WORST!!!
