I recently got insurance through my company and the Ames Eye Clinic was one of the closest facilities that my insurance would cover. I had never scheduled an eye appointment before but with this clinic it was quick and painless. I didnt have to wait for more than five minutes and they happily explained any questions I had in regards to the services they provided, differences in contacts vs glasses and how they were covered by my insurance, as well as any billing questions. The doctors and nurses were knowledgeable and friendly and put me at ease with their warm personalities. The most enjoyable part of the experience was trying on frames to find one that fit, and I ended up choosing some stylish red frames. My insurance covered most of the visit and I was able to use my Health Savings Account to pay the difference and the copay, so I walked away paying nothing extra! I was brought back a few days later to have the glasses fitted to me, and the lady who worked with me was very invested in making sure they fit comfortably and wouldnt be easily made to fall off. They provided a cleaning cloth and nifty carrying case for me, too. Its been a few weeks now and I still love my glasses. They havent fallen off, they rest quite comfortably and dont make my ears sore as some frames have in the past after extensive wear, and I still love the way I look in them. I would happily recommend them to anyone who is looking to schedule an eye appointment or get some new eyewear!

We gave insurance info 1.5 weeks in advance of our appointments and they said we were all set. Less than 24 hours before the anticipated visit we find out they have problems with insurance. 30 minutes before appointment I find out they stopped taking our insurance a month ago. We were told we can pay out of pocket. I was extremely upset because I had taken the day off work for this visit. I should have known at the time of the appointment our insurance wouldnt work so we could have made alternative plans. Instead morning of the appointment became a chaotic, last-minute attempt to find another place we could get same-day appointments to not require another day off. We cancelled our appointments and will never consider them for eye care again. (Two stars instead of one because the woman on the phone the day of scheduled appointment was nice, helpful, apologetic and was dealing with someone elses mess. This place needs to ensure all staff are better trained to handle the front desk when primary people are away and they need to do more for dissatisfied customers.)

I had a horrible experience here. I didnt have a car at the time because I was an ISU student. The glasses I received had the wrong prescription. When I asked to have them fixed they were incredibly rude to me. The glasses I got back still had the wrong prescription and they kept telling me the headaches they were causing were normal. When I took them to a different eye doctor he could see right away that they were not right and they even had an astigmatism for both eyes when I only have it in one. When I called to ask them to fix it they said it had been too long (but you only get one eye exam a year so what was I suppose to do when they were having me run back and forth without a car to keep picking up glasses that didnt work and being so rude about it). Its been a few years since this has happened and hopefully they have gotten their act together. I had to pay over $200 dollars (with insurance) to get different lenses because this eye clinic couldnt get it right the first time.

Update: Doc Kruger left me a voice mail asking that I call him back to talk about this review. This shows me he has does indeed worry about my experience, which is good. I also edited down the review, it was too long. The long and short of it? They are a good team, and generally friendly. I did feel blame was set upon me and the makers of my glasses (from a different company) after both came back and gave my left eye issues using the prescription from their tests. Even after I admitted I could have answered poorly at some point in the tests. The second examination was much shorter than a standard eye exam, I felt. For example, they did not double check my PD measurement. When you buy glasses, you absolutely must ask detailed questions to get information. They have a larger variety than what is shown or initially told. I only found out about different lens options after leaving, which might have gotten a sale out of me.

I have received excellent care at Ames Eye Clinic for the past five years. Dr. Michael Kruger is extremely skilled, personable and professional. Appointments are always quick, and the staff is accommodating with scheduling appointments. I appreciate how friendly the staff is, and I always feel like Im "coming home" when I visit. I have had LASIK eye surgery (which includes lots of follow up visits) and Dr. Mike has provided the greatest follow up care! I trust him completely, and I am so grateful to have him as my eye doctor. Go see him.. I highly recommend Ames Eye Clinic!

I was impressed as theyve spent a great amount of time for my comprehensive exam, and also patiently responded to all my questions. They were very friendly and at the same time, professional. Theyll definitely stay as my primary eye clinic as long as I stay in Ames, IA. The only reason I give them 4 out of 5 stars, is that they dont accept DeltaDental insurance to give you the current 35% discounts on frame + lenses. If youre counting on that discount, then you need to make another trip to where its accepted.

Maybe I was there on a bad day? My total time there was 2 hours for a contact lens exam. The doctor was thorough, but the initial exam took forever and the lady was not friendly. It seemed the staff was overall a little stuffy. I was told I had to have a retina photo - an extra $40 - which should be left up to me. After my insurance, my exam was still over $200. And then I was told it would take 2 weeks to get in my TRIAL pair of contacts. :(

Wonderful clinic with super nice staff, perfect equipment and great doctors. I was here for a general eye exam and I was very fortunate to meet Dr. Matt. He was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. He treated a big man like me with utmost care hence I believe kids would definitely be very comfortable around him. I highly recommend Ames Eye Clinic.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. Dr. Donner was quite funny and would thoroughly answer any questions that I asked him. After the check-up when I was ordering my contacts through my vision insurance, I called the office and they would quickly help solve problems that I ran into.

Excellent service and attention to detail. They were a lot more sensitive to my eyes compared to other nearby eye clinics. Everything was clearly explained. I highly recommend this place to anyone who needs eye care. Best eye clinic in ames hands down.

Great experience, great people, nice equipment. although what it would normally cost at other eye clinics (around $100) they charged $373 for an eye exam and a box of contacts that cost $65. So if money isnt an object I recommend this place.
