Dr. Marcalus went from a decent doctor with an awkward-but-straightforward bedside manner and rapport to a money and cost-focused time bomb. His switch to concierge medicine is clearly a play to push out all but the most wealthy patients in Edgewater and Annapolis. I had been a young patient of the doctors for a year. He was recommended to me. His practice sent out a notice that they were switching to a concierge model, which if you dont know, involves paying $1,200+ a year in addition to your co-pays and insurance. His letters didnt mention that small detail. When I called and a family member also inquired, Dr. M lost it, screaming that he "has thousands of patients and cant be concerned with the problems of one considering joining my practice." I would avoid this doctor. Granted, the state of healthcare in this country is challenging and how its going to affect patients and doctors is unclear. But heres what is clear: some doctors are going to tack away from a patient-focused care model to a cost/revenue-driven model. Doctor Marcalus is one of those doctors. If youre joining his practice for perceived closer-care and 24-7 access, take this vignette as a warning. This doctor doesnt care about you. The doctors Hippocratic Oath seems to have been to the wayside: he doesnt seem to care what harm he does.

My wife and I have been patients of Dr. Eric C. Marcalus for 10+ years and during this time I was diagnosed with stage IV head and neck cancer and was informed that I was in critical condition by all of my doctors. Dr. Marcalus was the one who first diagnosed my cancer and referred me to all of the specialist that I would need to utilize to try and beat the odds, which were not good. Through all of this, Dr. Marcalus was always in our corner providing any and all guidance that one would need when you are facing a certain calling of death at the doorway. Dr. Marcalus is a true caring and professional doctor and I certainly am far from wealthy, but through the grace of God and the caring of all my doctors, including Dr. Marcalus I can say "Thank You" for all of your kindness. My wife and I both whole heartily would recommend Dr. Marcalus to anyone that wants the best in the business. I believe Dr. Marcalus and his practice went the direction they did, because he wanted to be able to spend as much time as necessary with each and every patient and it shows with my 30-60 minute visits I have with him anytime I need it. Dr Marcalus has always taken great care of me abdominal my multiple ailments. I can count on him being proactive with all of my other specialists through use of texts, phone calls or faxing results from lab work or drug interactions. I am very confident that he will tell me exactly what is going on in my body and what I can do to help myself get stronger or better.
