Its common talk in Howell to just go to Ann Arbor of its anything serious and believe me I agree. After many many horror stories which would be too long to write I just decided to tell about my latest encounter yesterday and today. I just went through the emergency with a client of mine and he was treated wonderfully and everyone was fantastic, but when he was admitted to a room, it was awful!!! The nurse kept saying she didnt know what was going on, she was only the "middleman" trying to keep everyone happy. Who says that?! Every simple question I asked she was very denfensive saying "it wasnt her call or she didnt know" and said "doctors sometimes talk to other doctors and leave the nurses out of the loop" she was clearly stressed out and said "at night theres no staff and she runs around like crazy and cant remember all her patients but she tries." Really?? Then my clients towel was wet from ice he had and she put a blanket on him that was still dirty and had tape and adhesive stuck all up and down the blanket. She was too busy to get another blanket so I went to the linen door and she threw one to me and said "thank you! Just throw the other one in the dirty linens bin." When it came time to change the client, I had to assist her. Wow... Then I called today and got a nice receptionist and she transferred me to a nurse and she picked up and said she was on rounds and she really didnt know what was going on with my client and she would know more after rounds and call back in an hour. She said "some man was just here asking lots of questions, so if you guys could just have one person call to ask how hes doing, that would be great. I said that was the Pastor of our church who was there and his son lives out of state and Im his caregiver. She still asked for only one person to call to check on this wonderful 86 year old retired Pastor who had just had a stroke and couldnt talk on the phone!!! What is wrong with these nurses?! Please, if its something serious, just head to Ann Arbor. Ive had many health problems and Ive never been disappointed with Ann Arbor.

The quality of care and lack of resources make this hospital a death trap. A routine hip replacement turned into a nightmare for my mother and my family. One nurse, ONE had an educated professional bedside manner. Unfortunately she left at 7:30pm leaving my mother in the care of the most sour incompetence Ive ever had to experience. This "hospital" had only one blood pressure monitor for the entire floor, which was lost for 6 hours (the nurses words, not mine) she claimed she had "asked everyone and called the supervisor but, couldnt find it." Not that we even knew we needed the machine, all information was told to us as she made rounds complaining about this being an on going problem. The attitude of the nursing staff is really nasty, but what scared me the most was the lack of proper equipment, my mother almost died after surgery being completely unmonitered by proper equipment. A bed check every 30 minutes or so is no comparison to being properly monitered by a pulse/ oxygen machine and heart moniters tied directly to the nurses main station. Every single part of the experience except the surgery itself was a series of life threatening mistakes that could of killed my mother had we not been there to advocate, right down to the bandage removal, which the nurse one handedly ripped off using the wrong tape lifting about four layers of skin. Leaving the area around my mothers incision gaping and weeping with inch long wounds. We are so disappointed with the entire visit if the surgeon doesnt have hospital privlages elsewhere we unfortunately will have to vet out another great surgeon at an equally fitting hospital. Please dont leave a loved one alone here its not safe and they clearly could care less.

I was in the ER yesterday for 7 hours. I received such wonderful and compassionate care from an ER nurse. My 40+ years on earth and in ers with family members have proven most ER nurses to be crabby, frustrated and completely devoid of empathy. Janna was my nurse. She checked in with me repeatedly. Always with a SMILE. She came looking for me in ultrasound to give me my pain meds. Most ER nurses would just wait for their patient to return to give the meds. Her IV stick was completely pain free!! Janna was responsible for 8-10 patients in the time frame I was there. We were all in the Senior area of the ER and only separated by a curtain. I could hear her kindly and compassionately caring for each patient as she hustled to and from each suite or pushing them in wheelchairs, administering pain meds, following up with further questions patients had for the doctor, cross checking meds on her computer, reviewing discharge instructions and KINDLY doing it all. I will say this again. I have NEVER met such a wonderful nurse as JANNA. REQUEST HER IF YOU CAN !! She went above and beyond for each of us and I told her so. I vote Janna for Manager of the ER and train each nurse how to NURSEwith compassion and dedication to each patient. !!

I have tried many times to write this. Service has deteriorated over the past 2 years! Not what it used to be at the WOODLAND ER IN BRIGHTON! The Physician Assistant was totally in charge, onlty about a 2 second contact with the doctor who was cold, distant, and totally silent while the PA took charge. The PA, though friendly most of the time was clearly overworked, frustrated by my frightened requests to have my oncologist & cardiologist contacted, because I was also afraid of drug interactions with the chemo drug they knew nothing about. When I went to U of M by ambulance I got much better care. KIND CARE & INTELLIGENT CARE. One of the people who was taking out trash at Woodland Brighton yelled at me because I wanted my husband to step out because I thought the PA was talking to my doctor because others were standing around. This is a NO! NO! - Hippa laws I guess? Beware if this is something that requires communication with your primary care doctors and needs the care of a caring, involved, empathetic MD or DO! CARE AT THE ST. JOSEPH MERCY ER IN HOWELL HAS ALWAYS BEEN COMPASSIONATE, COMPETENT, AND COMMITTED HOWEVER! GO TO HOWELL!

Dont come to this place for any of your womanly issues. I came in with a ruptured cyst (and I know thats exactly what it is due to a total hysterectomy and more than several well documented experiences of this) and was immediately blown off by the doctor. Pain level at a 8, was not addressed. Nausea was barely addressed. After a pelvic exam, a ultrasound and a pelvic ultrasound that was agonizing at best, I was still being ignored by the doctor. I will never come here or recommend this place to anyone! ***Update*** I got a call from the ER dept 2 nights later. Microbiology came back that I have a UTI. At the time of the call, I was in 10 times worse shape, with high fever, chills, vomiting and excruciating pain to the point I couldnt walk or stand. I was rushed to U of M only to find out I have a severe kidney infection (on top of reduced kidney function), along with a enlarged and inflammed appendix and a 3cm cyst on my left ovary (all of which St. Joseph never acknowledged). Ive been here for 4 days and the care has been excellent. Dont ever take anyone you care about to St.Joseph, its obvious they dont care one bit about their patients!
