I have been a patient at Madeira Optical for many years. I drive 45 minutes each way for a visit and its well worth it. Im always impressed with how clean and fresh the office is at any given time during the day. The staff is timely and professional and Im always greeted with a smile and hello. During my last visit I was in for an exam and I decided I wanted to try new glasses. Lisa helped me sort through a lot of options and helped me decipher what looked best on my smaller head. I totally trusted her judgement and even had fun as we laughed at the not so flattering frames. I ended up choosing a red pair, which is a little out of my comfort zone. Im so glad I trusted Lisas opinions because everyone loves them and they are my favorite pair to date... and Ive been wearing glasses for 25 years. During my exam I was having a little trouble with my eyes burning and itching. My prescription had changed a little and my contacts had been uncomfortable for awhile. Dr. Adams was very patient with me and really took the time to listen to my concerns. We discussed different options and she ordered multiple trial contacts for me to try. Dr. Adams wanted to get to the bottom of my itchy, burning eyes, so she examined further to find that they were extremely dry. She gave me some moistening drops and talked with me about how to care for my eyes during the allergy season. She was very helpful and I could definitely tell that she cares about each and every one of her patients. Before I left I went to the counter to checkout. All my paperwork and information was printed and ready to go. Lisa explained that when my trial contacts were in I would be notified and I could try them out and see which ones worked the best. If I still felt uncomfortable with any of them, then they would try some more until I found the ones I liked best. That is really important to me since I wear contacts all day, every day and want them to be as comfortable and clear as possible. Im always impressed that I never have to wait very long when I arrive, yet the Doctors, opticians and staff take their time with me and Im never rushed. Scheduling patients and appointments in any kind of doctors office setting must be highly calculated to stay on track and keep patients happy. The Madeira Optical ladies know what it takes to make it work.

First of all, I would say that Dr. Pence is a fantastic doctor: thorough, personal, friendly, and helpful. Beyond my experience with the doctor, though, I did not enjoy my several visits to this business (was here a total of 3 times - once for me and twice for my daughter). The women who work here are very dedicated and efficient and friendly in the most superficial way - but for the most part, I did not find them personable or feel that they were actually glad I was there. Their names were not offered...I had to ask them. With only one exception in 3 visits, there was no conversation, no chatting (even while waiting 15 minutes in silence for one woman to process some information) that was not essential to business interaction. Some people might like this...but this did NOT feel like Madeira. I try very hard to choose businesses with the small-town Madeira feel to them. THIS place could have been in a Forest Park strip mall and I never would have known the difference. The selection of glasses is rather appalling. It looks like they have plenty to choose from until you realize that many of the frames are the 3 or 4 various colors available of the exact same shape. I was not happy with my final selection, but it was the best I could do. Finally, they are so NOT up front with costs - except for the extra cost for the eye ex-ray ($25), not a single mention was made in my 1.5 hour visit. Finally, after sitting 15 minutes watching the woman sitting at her post (practically silent) tallying up the costs for the visit, contacts, glasses, frames, etc, I finally had to ASK what anything cost. She dutifully went over the charges (we were above $800) and they were fine for me, but I think its ridiculous that a customer has to ask a business what anything costs before she hands me the full bill. I took my daughter in 6 months, thinking that perhaps when I first visited, they were having a rough day, but our experience was pretty much the same as the first time I was there. In truth, I enjoyed our trip to our new Madeira dentist more than going to Madeira Optical.

My first appointment with Madeira Optical was the best eye doctor appointment Ive ever had. Dr Kritzer was extremely thorough, communicative, personable, and caring. She wanted to make certain I knew exactly what the tests were for, and what the results meant. The welcoming staff of Megan and Chelsea put me in great spirits as soon as I arrived. Chelsea helped me find a perfect new set of glasses, and all was a breeze. I also like that they take the payment right from my insurance, rather than charging me first, and asking me to get the reimbursement from my insurance company. Highly HIGHLY recommended!
