After coming from a dentist who gave me a bad crown, Mattson seemed like a decent guy. Hes very personable, friendly, generally nice. I got a root canal with an endodontist he recommended to address the crown issue, but something continued bothering me; a slight nagging sensation, barely even pain, in the affected area. It was a small, nagging thing, but going to both Dr. Mattson and the endodontist he recommended got me nothing but confused- often with entirely different answers. His answer shifted from "No, its nothing, really." to "There might be some infection remaining, but we cant tell yet, we need six months before we can x-ray it to find out" (which goes against what his endodontist told me, hilariously.) Finally, it ended up as "Oh, your crown (done by a different dentist) has some issues, but it wont be anything serious. Youll need to get them replaced at some point." Its difficult, being a dentist; apparently, teeth look so drastically different day-to-day you cant give a consistent diagnosis... Fast-forward to today. They send me a bill for a visit to keep up on this- mind, these visits were free, until at some point they werent, no one told me, and they lost a digit in my address and only called me about it literally three months later. My mouth is what can be poetically described as a maelstrom of pain, and I decide to go in to pay this bill, see what replacing these supposedly bad crowns costs. I was going to wait until my next cleaning, but this was a good opportunity. Needless to say the amount was outrageous, and I might have been willing to file that under well, thats dentistry- but the kind lady at the desk mentioned it was because of the root canal. Whoops. So, in other words, I have to spend extra money because Dr. Mattson had me get a root canal on a crown he PRESUMABLY knew would have to be replaced. Then they couldnt give me a straight answer. Assuming thats even whats going on- I couldnt talk to Dr. Mattson, since apparently his time is so tremendously valuable he cant even spare a minute to confirm the symptoms Im having make sense with a bad crown. I leave it to the reader, then, to decide if the above is appropriate behavior for a dentist. My answer is no. I suspect he was trying to pull something over my head, but I cant say for sure. I can say, however, that I can no longer trust him in the slightest, and I cannot trust my health to someone I cant trust at all.

I wish it were possible to give Dr. Mattson and his staff more than five stars--however, since five stars are the most I can give him, I will. Dr. Mattson and his practice have absolutely positively earned every single one of them and then some. Dr. Mattson is a second-generation dentist, and shares the practice with his father. Having grown up around dentistry, It is plainly evident by everything that happens in that practice that Dr. Mattson thoroughly loves being a dentist. From the second I sat down in his chair, up until I left. Dr. Mattson and his staff were all courteous, compassionate, professional, and superb at their duties. Dr. Mattsons chair-side manner is the best I have ever experienced. He genuinely cares about his patients and their well-being, taking the time to explain every aspect of your procedure in sufficient detail that even someone as hugely dental-phobic as I am is put at ease. My procedures were all conducted quickly, smoothly, and professionally, and Im absolutely thrilled with the results. Im very happy to say that I have found a dentist for life. So Dr. Mattson, please dont ever retire. :-)

I dont normally write these things but the bad rating made me so annoyed I felt compelled. My experience with Dr. Sam has been amazing! He took a mouth full of bad dental advice from other dentists over the years and in less than a year, gave me a smile to be proud of. The man is a miracle worker and has a great chair side demeanor. Easy to talk to, non-judgmental and went way above and beyond what any other dentist would do to make me feel at ease. He is highly ethical in that he chose to save a couple of teeth rather than pull and put in much costlier replacements. Now my whole family goes to see him with the same positive experiences as well AND I refer all my friends to his practice too. The whole staff is great and this dentist is the best I have ever had. I really can’t believe anyone would rate anything except a 5 and it sounds like the bad experience isnt even Dr. Sams fault! Great dental office, great hygienists, great dentist. Period.

Like another reviewer, I felt compelled to post a positive review due to a negative one that was left. Dr Mattson is the best dentist Ive ever had...and Ive been through a ton of dentists. The hygienists are extremely gentle on your teeth and Dr Mattson always takes his time to check to make sure everything is healthy in my mouth. Everyone in the office is really nice as well. Overall a very pleasant experience every time I go or I wouldnt drive all the way from NE Pdx to see him. Very highly recommended!!!

Dr. Mattson has been my dentist for over 5 years now. He is very professional, caring, and friendly. His staff has always made my family and I feel comfortable and welcome. He took the time to get to know me and I dont feel like just another patient.

Sam is a fantastic dentist who does incredible work. He is extremely fair and does a great job of explaining all of your options when work is needed. Our whole family goes to him and we will never go anywhere else.

Is one of the best if not the best dentist I have ever been to. Astonishingly good bedside manor, extremely thorough, and skilled. Hygienist cleans to a perfectly immaculate level.
