Dr. Matthew Shapiro is very rude and uncaring and has a terrible bedside manner. He left me feeling terrible about myself. I have shoulder pain due to 3 bone spurs pushing into my rotator cuff and causing inflammation. He told me it was due in part to me being "fat" and that I should lose weight to make it better. What does weight have to do with bone spurs in my shoulder? He doesnt know my medical history. I was referred to him by my primary care doctor. I spent most of my life in very good shape and was injured on the job and it left me disabled and I cannot walk without a cane. I gained weight due to this. He isnt aware that in the last year I lost over 60 lbs. and am still dropping weight. He didnt care and just called me "fat". He gave me a cortisone injection and said that it was more difficult to give it to me rather than a skinny person because all the "fat" made it hard to find the right spot! The shoulder area is not known to have a great deal of fat! Then he said I needed to go to PT to get my range of motion back but said nothing about dealing with the primary cause of the problem which is the bone spurs. He also left me to find my own PT facility and gave me no referral. I will never go back there and I plan on seeing another doctor for my pain. I dont recommend him at all! However the office staff was very cordial and accommodating but that doesnt make up for bad doctor care. I wanted to add a follow-up to this review. My primary sent me to another doctor who ordered an MRI and found massive damage in my shoulder and I had to have an operation on my rotator cuff. In addition to the bone spurs, I had torn ligaments, a ligament wrapped around a bone and being pinched and three tears. I asked how in the world I had done all that damage when I hadnt been working due to my previous injury and was told it was all an old injury that had gotten worse. It made sense, since I had experienced shoulder pain for some time but lived with it until it became unbearable. Such an uncaring, rude and incompetent doctor!!

This is, in my opinion, just another example of a medical facility involved in Billing Scams. I was treated at Slocum for a broken wrist. I was appropriately charged for several of the procedures administered. I ONLY went to Slocum twice for this incident: the original visit, and one follow up. The cast was removed from my arm on the follow up. Yet, Slocum placed me on some type of protocol which billed me for SEVERAL visits even though I had not gone in for any of them: $1862.13 just for the office visits and exams. I called them up and complained. By the way, I handle medical billing at my employment. I informed the billing department at Slocum this was an illegal practice as I did NOT agree to this protocol. Furthermore, I had no need for any further services from them. I was told this was standard practice. I informed them my Attorney would be contacting them and I would look into initiating a "Class Action Suit". Im sure thousands of Slocum patients have been miss-billed in this manner. They said they would look into the matter and adjust my bill. Two weeks later, I received the adjusted bill for $ 208.16. WOW. I paid the bill and kept the receipt. Since then, I have received three more bills from Slocum for the same services and the same amount. They continue claiming I have not paid the $208.16, even though I show them the receipt and credit card statement. They claim I will no longer get another bill, yet I continue getting them to this day. THEY ARE TYPICAL CON ARTIST. Just another group of extremely-greedy doctors looking to take advantage of the common patient. Look at your bills closely. Many facilities do this practice now. Slocum is the WORST !!!!

Slocum Center for Orthopedics is a new, clean facility with state of the art equipment. You would think this would translate to excellent physicians and care. Unfortunately, making an appointment with Slocum Orthopedics is a complete waste of time. 1) I first called to make a appointment. I was on the phone for over a half hour giving them all my information and medical history. When I arrived for my appointment, they had no record of this, had to restart everything. Another 30 minutes. Then I finally saw the physician 1hr after scheduled. Their scheduling department is horrendous. I had multiple appointments scheduled for the same thing on the same day for my next appointment. Not sure how this happened. 2) I first saw Lisa Pomranky, she passed me on to Matthew Shapiro with no solutions or help. Shapiro sent me to physical therapy. These doctors seem to have the mindset, no surgery no $$, on to the next. I still cant sleep and have pain. My physical therapy appointment was even worse. 45 min = $303. I was told my insurance would pay, but they dont. The physical therapy seemed to be geared for people over 80 years old. First 15 minutes (evaluation) = $173, next 30 min = $130. What a waste of time! Learned how to breathe and about chi or some crap. Really helped my bicep!!!

3rd worst experience Ive had is going to slocum to get treatment for my broken knee, the first two were the actual breaking of my knees. This orthopedic center has the worst reception services of any medical business Ive been to, doctors dentists specialists this place takes the cake and has more employees than anything but a hospital. While it may appear fully staffed there are maybe one or two people with brains in the building. I dont know how my surgery went as it was two weeks ago but I do know that if you call in about a surgery be prepared to wait for a while. First appointment I have is in a few days which will be over two weeks since my surgery and I didnt even see te operatingn doctor after my surgery was completed. I went under a GA and had a nerve block during operation and they did not give me proper pain medicine, they have me far too lift of pain killers for the operation I had and obviously they are overly worried about addiction vs the pain level of their clients, as are most places that hire on an entirely incompetent staff. Hope the doctors arent as fake and horrible as the place in which they work, seemingly nice but on the inside its hollow, no ones home. Slocum has customer service on par with Comcast.

I highly recommend Dr. Donald Jones and Slocum Orthopedics. When you care about your health, you need to go to "the guy." Dr. Jones is "the guy" for achilles injuries from the typical rupture to more complex cases like mine which was a complete severing of the tendon. It required a reattachment, which, in turn, required a procedure to give the Dr. more inches of tendon to work with. Then, as Dr. Jones said, "The object is not for you to limp out of the office, the object is for you to leap out of the office." So he did a tendon transplant to give me more spring in my step. According to the web posts I saw, the OSU team uses him, and so do lots of people who come from out of state. Dr. Jones was personally recommended by my physical therapists boss who works with patients from all over the valley to rehab foot/ankle/tendon injuries after surgery and gets to see lots of surgery results. He chose Dr. Jones for his TWO tendon surgeries. So did I. So should you. 3 months after surgery and I am walking in my boot, but feeling less pain than i have for years. Thanks, Dr. Jones, I DO have a spring in my step.
