Within the last year, my son has gone from a kid who we thought had a pretty severe case of ADHD/Combined Type to being diagnosed with Bipolar I (along with a few other things). The first time we had him admitted here, I was hysterical. He was hysterical. The second time was worse. He had to get an injection in his rear to calm him down as he was having a full blown panic attack. We live an hour away so getting him there is never an easy thing. Its terrifying and heartbreaking. By the time I am halfway into my drive home, I call them (no matter what time of day or night) and ask how he is. He is always calm. Dr. Polk is AMAZING. My son trusts him implicitly. Nurse Kathy (you can sometimes catch her on the Adolescent Ward(s) is a beautiful soul who is genuinely in it for the care of those who are in crisis. Andrea and Caroline are also wonderful LPCs who will always call you back with any questions you have. Sometimes there are "scary kids" here. Theres a reason they are there. I have heard tale of some fights that have happened but they are always quickly and professionally de-escalated. This is never easy. This is ALWAYS gut-wrenching. It can also be a total relief when you walk out of those doors with your child safely inside.... THIS DOES NOT MAKE YOU A BAD PARENT. My son has been there five times for emergent stabilization; once being transferred to RTC from there. He did great after RTC but then his Grandma, who was like another parent to him passed and he needed to be somewhere safe a few months later. I cannot recommend this place enough. The only complaint I have is how LOOOOONG the admission process is. Plan on being there for a minimum of three hours.

Went in trying to get into the php program for Monday through Friday and ended up being told I could not leave. Assessment process is terrible. Staff questioned me for less than 5 minutes left and came back stating I have to stay voluntarily or under emergency detention. I was asked if I was suicidal and I said no but my paperwork says I was suicidal and had a plan which blew my mind. LIES. LIES lies to suck money from your insurance. Got in and staff could care less if you eat, get out of bed, shower, or stare at a wall for hours. Have a daily and weekly schedule posted but rarely is it followed. Got in on a Saturday afternoon and didnt eat until Sunday afternoon. Impossible to get help in this place. Staff treats you like youre scum and stupid and invisible. Getting any help at the nurses station is nearly impossible. Asked a nurse if they feed us here and she said NO in sarcasm and hatred. Witnessed patients with hands in their pants during groups and nothing done about that even though its clearly going on. Staff is rude and negligent. Not a place that provides compassion or help only pure lies and what feels like hatred. Its a very dirty, shady place with doctors uneducated about mental health. Like I said no compassion at all. Why go into a job that requires helping people yet you dont care to help. Blows my mind. Dont go here. The only benefit I got out of my experience was my therapist getting me out of there and the only other help I got was from other patients.

The most depressing place Ive ever been! Treated like prisoners! Voluntary inpatient, told if we left without discharge, we would be arrested and charged with felony! I was told it was a regular hospital with emphasis on counseling and that my acute medical problem would be treated there. It was not! I had to wear same hospital gown 2 days, no medical help at all! They came into my room in the middle of the night turning on lights and going thru my 2 sets of pajamas looking for who knows what? They found a pack of cookies left by previous patient and scolded me for it! The psychiatrist ordered staff to schedule appointment for me with surgeon per ER instructions, they did not! My husband had to threaten to sue if they did not release me because I needed medical help immediately! They did release me after 3 days of total hell! They totally misrepresented the facts to get me admitted. Ive never been treated so badly! I dont think prisoners in jail are treated this badly. I would avoid this place like the plague! If you need help, this will only make you more depressed! Each patient that was discharged couldnt wait to get away, and stated they didnt get any help whatsoever. Being locked up in a small day room all day, not allowed outside at all, except for smokers. My physician stated she had only heard horrible stories about this place, and would have stopped me from going if she had known in advance! IF YOU NEED HELP, DO NOT GO HERE!

This is an excellent facility for teen care. Their staff treats their patients as if they were their own children. Never having to have to place my daughter into a place like this I was scared to entrust anyone with her. The doctors were excellent and made appropriate medicine changes, that drastically helped stabilize my daughter. The nurses were great and helpful when I would call to check in on her. It may have been the longest week of my life to have her away, but it was the best thing for her. My daughters comments (14 years old): the place was pretty chill, we did alot of activities together and we learned alot from one another. The nurses and staff were so funny and great. I wanted to go home so bad, but at the same time I do miss some of the people that impacted my life so much. When my parents told me I was going inpatient, I looked up all the local hospitals and the comments scared me, if you are reading this, and your parents have chosen this place, dont be scared, you will be okay and you will learn alot. It is a good place. I was even told by some of the staff that have worked at the NIX, Laurel Ridge and Clarity programs, the one at SABH was the best choice and the best program and that they would not suggest those other programs to others. I was glad my parents put me here. I feel good again. Thank you to the Staff at Unit C for your love, attentiveness, compassion and dedication.

Adolescent unit. This place needs to be shut down. It is actively violating patients rights. As a voluntary admit, I was denied discharge and threatened when I told them that, if I was not discharged within four hours, I would be calling my lawyer and my mother. The patients are not given anything to do all day, causing further self-destructive thoughts and depression. Theres no library. They are treated as prisoners. Wanna know what the adolescent unit has to occupy patients? A television, a couch, and a small fenced in area with broken boards and graffiti on it. Furthermore, we were told for a five-night stay, it would cost us ~200 dollars. We were lied to and that, folks, is yet another crime to add to their repetoire. Instead, they are now predatorially hounding my mother for thousands of dollars in bills. Our insurance is fantastic, has approved them, yet SABHC wont allow us to file a claim. This is active malpractice and needs to be stopped. Accept as a last resort, or if you just really want to be in a prison disguised as a hospital, or if you want to be scolded and pontificated rather than nurtured or healed, then DO NOT COME HERE. By the way... Wanna call your loved ones and check in on them now and then? Good luck. Patients are only allowed to accept calls for a period of about an hour and a half at night. There are, additionally, only two phones for 24 patients.
