My first experience here was a positive one. I woke up one morning to my elderly asthmatic cat having a great deal of difficulty breathing. Shes usually huffing a little more than a normal cat because of her condition, but she was clearly struggling and open-mouth breathing. I called my usual vet and was told there were no openings until Monday. Of all the other animal hospitals in the area I called, Shady Grove was the only one that recognized the situation as serious and told me to come over right away. They wasted no time bringing my cat into the exam room as soon as I showed up, and they took very good care of her. She was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection and was given the appropriate meds. We set up a follow-up appointment and we left with home care instructions. Shes clearly feeling much better now. Shes even breathing better than she was before the respiratory infection. I couldnt be a happier. I would highly recommended Shady Grove to anyone who cares about their pet!

I cant say enough good things. My wife and I moved to Richmond last fall, and our dog (4-yr old hound mutt) had her first visit in December of 2010, for a routine 6-month exam. Dr. Lucas was great. Very knowledgeable, professional, and courteous. The clinic is clean and very well-maintained. Since December, we have had 2 "emergency" situations where our dog was very VERY sick with diarrhea and vomiting. The first incident was on a Saturday, and even though they schedule Saturday appointments months in advance, they squeezed us in, diagnosed our dog, and she recovered quickly. We saw Dr. Elliott, who, just like Dr. Lucas, was extremely professional and made us feel like our poor sick puppy was in good hands. Most recently, our dog was ill again (most likely from picking up goose droppings), and Shady Grove squeezed us in after hours! Like I said, I cannot say enough good things about the clinic and the vets who work there.

Dr. Lori has been helping our pets since before she opened Shady Grove. Over the years she has become as much a part of our family as our small friends. Through several generations of dogs and cats she has always been compassionate, competent and professional. When our pets are young she helps us get them off to a good start, and when their time grows short she shows us how best to deal with the issues that arise with age. Whe the inevitable arrives she is gentle, compassionate and supportive. It is obvious that she loves our friends as much as we do. When Lori is unavailable we have complete confidence in the other doctors and the clinic staff. Each individual at Shady Grove is every bit as dedicated to the health and welfare of our pets as are we. You could make no better choice for your companions. We are truly blessed to have this clinic.

My husband and I had to say goodbye to our little dachshund Luigi last year. He unfortunately had several strokes. Shady Grove cared for him during his final days and came to our home to make his trip over the rainbow bridge easier. They were so kind and caring taking time with us, ensuring we got a paw print, a hair clipping and even looked at old photos of our little man with us when we had to say goodbye. They planted a tree in his honor and sent us several cards with condolences. After such a caring experience I can not imagine taking my new adopted Doxie anywhere else.

Dr. Lucas at Shady Grove Animal Clinic is fantastic. He is brilliant, kind, humble, technically proficient, and cost-conscious. I simply could not ask for more from a veterinarian. He has performed surgery on our two dogs (an ACL repair and various complicated lipoma excisions) and did a fantastic job on all procedures, providing amazing post-operative care to ensure we were happy with the results. I dont often write reviews; few are more deserving than Dr. Lucas and his staff at Shady Grove.

Shady Grove has given me the best service for my pets in Richmond by far! Dr. Lucas is friendly, knowledgeable and shows true compassion and caring for the animals he tends to. Our dog Leroy LOVES him as well as the entire staff there. We know that he is in good hands, which gives us relief since Leroy is basically our 80+ pound baby. They always fit us in for emergencies and keep us updated when Leroy is due back for his future appointments.

I would reccomend these vets to anyone. My cat had gone to a "Cat Hospital" before and left with an outrageous bill and "Caution - Will Bite" stickers all over her file. At Shady Grove all the vets and staff are wonderful, their rates are reasonable and my cat is her normal sweet self. I have since gotten a dog and they take wonderful care of her as well. I just cant say enough good things about Shady Grove!!!
