I have very fair skin with freckles and a family with a history of skin cancer, so I should really see a dermatologist every year. This is a new practice for me, and Dr. Chang was the first dermatologist I saw since moving to Seattle. It was a very small and unassuming office, I didnt have to wait long at all to see him. When I got into the room, it was cold (not literally) and stale with nothing on the walls or anywhere to tell you this doctor cared about how his patients felt in the room or was interested in educating them. I mean, arent there usually even posters of the human anatomy to keep your eyes occupied while the doctor pokes and prods you? Nothing. Next, he asks to see my skin - shoulders, arms, back, etc. First thing he does is make a comment about my "skin damage". I think he meant, "freckles". Yes, it is a sign of skin damage, technically, but I already feel self-conscious being covered in them and never being able to tan properly - he goes and says I have skin damage all over my face? Thanks, really comforting. He looks at me for about 30 seconds and says he doesnt see any major cause for concern, I can go. ... Okay, maybe this is a sign he knows his profession VERY well, certainly. However, having talked with my family about their yearly visits all the time, I think - hes supposed to ask if I have any concerns or have noticed anything! So... I say I see something on my arm that I wonder about, what could it be? So, he decides to lance it and test it. No, "well, its probably this, or that - but if youre worried, do you want me to remove it?". This lancing leaves a scar bigger than the mark in the first place, he obviously has no concern about how my skin LOOKS besides what he decides shouldnt be there in the first place - like freckles. Well, it ended up being nothing, but cost me about $300 to find that out. Needless to say, I found a new doctor for this year. Im sure hes very good at his job and very time efficient, certainly. If getting in and out with the assessment made quickly is your main concern, hes great and right off the freeway (why I gave him 2 stars, some people might like that). But if youre at all sensitive about people looking you over or making comments or want to feel comfortable and relaxed while doing this, even if it all takes an extra 5 or 10 minutes, do not go here.

The bedside manner is not what I am used to from places like UW Physicians, etc. The doctor sort of followed my lead, and did not give a lot of flowery reassurances. They do not call back with results-- I have to call them. (I guess they want to avoid phone-tag.) The doctor said everything is fine, but not in a way that was super convincing. However, I called for the pathology result, the doctor came to the phone, and told me the results. I was able to get an appointment on short notice, no run-around. I cant comment on the cost yet, but I was worried about a mole, and it was removed and tested within a week of me calling for the appointment. The mole check was awkward, and I am not shy, so if you are shy about having some old guy look at your pale freckly skin and make possibly tone-deaf comments, you could try a different place. I felt a little awkward in the setting, but my mole is healing fine so far. The prior mole I had removed left a huge scar, and the bedside manner was great. Id take awkward and less scar over a more standard polite exam and a huge lumpy scar that I was left with.

Whoever rated Dr Chang two stars sounds like they need more than a dermatologist....cant handle the truth, dont ask. Yes, the office is spartan, and the Dr is direct, I like both of those ways of operating. Ive been going to him for years, he is actually a very good guy, and a good doctor

He knows how to manage chronic skin conditions and does all he can to help you afford your medication. Very good doc who I intend to stick with.
