Many people living full time in a rural area need a veterinary that is not intent in selling dog/cat tooth paste and tooth brushes for animals. She explains that there is a new study laboratory which states plaque causes heart attacks in animals and humans. However, with the amount of lawn fertilizer in others peoples lawns, chemicals from farms, etc-the chances of a dog dying because the plaque on his teeth caused a heart attack is minimal-especailly dogs that are not overweight or eat poorly. To start off a vet/patient relationship with trying to sell this logic creates mistrust. Most of our grandparents would flip in their grave-if we said we were out brushing the livestocks teeth or animal companions teeth. Back then those dogs lived long and healthy lives. Also, her suggestion about my dog having lyme disease-I cannot afford all the test needed to check out the hundreds of strains of lyme disease. Another expensive procedure discussed before getting into the main reason I am seeing the vet, If you can spend spend $500-$1000 a year in preventative health care plus vaccines and anythings else she wants to sell -then she is the vet for you. We understand that she needs to make a good living however the median income in Washburn and Ashland Wisconsin is low therefore her costumer base wants basic care for our pets. My dog is a breed like a cocker spaniels that has deep ear canals and are prone to ear infections. I do not need to see Gretchen twice a years at $150 a pop, plus take off work and pay for prescription medication after listening to all these procedures needed for my animal. My two previous vets from the Twin City region were familiar with particular breed issues and would just issue on going prescription dog ear medicine. I need it 3-4 times a year. Gretchens solution is a $400 + operation. This is because she needs to use local anesthesia to then deply clean the dogs ear canal and then most likely she said it will return. I consuted with the dogs breeder. They have been breeding for over 40 years- I looked on chat pages for these dogs also there owners have stated yes, they have chronic ear issues. Vets typically just give prescription ear drops . So, I told her both these versions but she wants to operate. My dog is 8 years old- I should have a say, whether or not I want an operation. She sells so hard-trust is gone. Plus, the products, tests, operations are superfluous products and srvices-

I live part time in Bayfield and I arrived late one Saturday evening only to find out that I forgot my dogs insulin. Well, of course, everything was closed including CVS that fills the prescription. My Twin Cities vet did not have an after hours call option, so I called Country Care Pet Hospital. I had boarded my dogs here several times and had great service. Without making too long of a story, I want to tell you that Dr. Gerber went above and beyond and helped me find a solution to my problem - which entailed an insulin prescription that had no refills! I felt care for and, more importantly, my old dog Bailey felt very cared for. This will be our primary vet when we move to Bayfield full time! Great experience! Sue and Bailey Nelson

Dr. Gretchen Gerber is a fantastic vet. She is the only vet I trust with my boxers surgeries. That being said its a 3.5 hour drive for me one way to see her. Having in house digital radiography, lab and surgerical laser is a huge plus! You truely cannot find better care for your animals.

The best vet in the area by far. Performed surgery on our 13 year old cat to extract many teeth. Took every necessary precaution to get him through surgery safely. If you really care about your pet, she is an awesome vet.
