We adopted a puppy from here in a February. We adopted him in good faith that he was healthy. He was undersocialized but healthy we were told. We did the follow up vet exam; which showed he was infested with ticks, had kennel cough, and giardia. We had him treated for those items. He was never active, he stopped eating, drinking- we took him back to the vet and at this time were give more medications and it was mentioned his symptoms were looking more and more like distemper. We ended up at the vet a few more times, including an emergency animal ER and was told he was never healthy and most likely wouldnt recover. The adoption specialist we worked with had told us there is a money back guarantee if things dont work out with your new pet. We figured that since we had put hundreds of dollars into treatment, getting back our $450 adoption fee would be something. That is where the nightmare really began with this institution. We were given an appointment time and arrived at the time, at the location with our dog and explained the situation to a tech who never once showed any empathy for ourbsutuarion. We were hoping the puppy would be taken in and treated and released back for adoption. The tech states that after talking to a vet the only option was to have the puppy euthanized. This is distressing to us but we understood how sick he was. We requested to be present during the procedure and to have his ashes returned back to us. That wasnt an option. We were to pay $190 and hand the dog over and if we wanted a refund for our adoption fee we would have to go to the original place of adoption- which is where we called to schedule an appointment! It was very transactional and business like and in no way what one would expect from a humane society and no empathy for our situation or even an apology that we were given a very sick animal under the belief that he was healthy, just shy and under socialized. We called the other campus and for the third time told our story- and no appointments available for euthanasia with the owners present and an individual cremation with the remains returned. We ended up going though a local vet office to have the prodcwduee done and were pleased to be treated with empathy and genuine concern for our loss. We would like a refund of our adoption fee since the animal we were given was sick and his medical condition was never disclosed to us. We would also like reimbursement for his end of life procedure since no one at your "humane" society was willing to work with us to get a necessary and difficult thing done. This has been the worst experience with a shelter Ive ever personally experienced and the lack of warmth and apology is appalling. The fact that our sick puppy was nothing more than a number and a transaction is sickening. The fact that dogs are adopted out without full disclosure of their medical conditions, or even worse without a comphrensive medical exam is sickening. It sucks that two people who were looking for a long term companion gets nothing but expense, heartache, and the run around. We have asked to speak with someone to resolve this and get put on hold or get left in a waiting room and have never once seen a supervisor.

Today my daughter and I took our cat to be euthanized at the Dobbins location. This location allows for the owner to be present during the injection. The staff were wonderful, caring, sincere and patient. We went into an exam room and were visited by the vet. She was very kind. They took our cat in the back to put in the catheter. When they brought her back we were allowed as much time as we needed to prepare and say our goodbyes. Afterwards, the vet checked to verify that she had passed and we were again, left alone to take as much time as we needed. The cost was a flat $75 as we took her with us to freeze until we could afford cremation. It was a long drive for us, but well worth it. Our own vet, though fantastic, charged nearly $400 for the same service. We did bring documentation so that the Humane Society could see that she was, indeed, our cat and that she had medical issues. I dont know if this is required or not, I brought it just in case. Make sure that if you make an appointment for euthanasia, that you specify that you want to be present in the room, they do block off more time for this. With regard to many of the negative reviews on here, you must know that any large organization is going to have issues. I volunteered for them (Hatcher Location) a few years ago. Yes, upper management could use some customer service skills, but the employees that work directly with the animals are good people that get paid very little. The volunteers are also good people. If you are planning on going in for interviews and the like, its best that you make an appointment so that time can be set aside for you. Everyone is very busy and stopping to talk, can sometimes interfere with the work being done. Care for the animals should come first. With regard to the reviewer stating that a mans pet was euthanized because of non payment. Everywhere you go, payment is due for services rendered. To expect that any place will simply care for your animal for free is unrealistic. They get thousands of animals turned in and cannot afford to spend time and resources on sick or injured animals that have a poor prognosis and that they do not know if the owner will even come back for their pet. People dump their animals off all the time and walk away. I think its quite arrogant and selfish to be angry because your friend didnt get free services. Its not a boarding facility, either. If your friend could not afford the care, he should not have brought the animal in. I spent nearly a grand trying to get my cat through hepatic lipidosis to no avail. Not being able to afford the $400 my own vet wanted for euthanasia, I was thrilled that this more affordable option was available to us. And wishing that the Arizona Humane Society closes shows just how little concern you actually have for all of the animals. Without them, people would be dumping their pets in the desert, at the pound (they already get too many) or at "no kill" shelters where disease runs rampant and hoarding is a regular occurrence.

I wish I could give this particular location 0 stars. The competence of the staff is deplorable. My husband and I went in this morning with the intention of adopting a dog, and when we did not find one that suited us, we looked through the little critters there instead. I fell in love with a bunny named Candy and asked to put a 3:30 hold on her to give me enough time to go to the store and get her new home set up for her. The girl taking care of everything said that 3:30 would be just fine, had us fill out some paperwork, and told us everything was set. After spending an hour at the pet store purchasing everything I needed, and another half an hour getting everything set up and ready for the bunny, I headed to this location and arrived around 3:15 to pick up Candy. When I arrived and announced who I was there for, the staff looked confused and asked if I was the 2nd hold. When I told them I was the first, they informed me my hold expired at 3:00. I informed them that the time we had established, and confirmed before we left, was 3:30. The very rude red-head behind the desk called the people who had put Candy on a 2nd hold, told them, "The first hold is here for Candy, and is upset that she arrived after her hold expired. Its completely up to you if you still want Candy, or if you will let the first hold have it, even though hers is expired." It took everything in me not to completely chew out the staff member. It was NOT my fault that they did not write down the correct time. To infer it was my fault, and say so IN FRONT OF ME to a stranger, is completely unprofessional. When the 2nd hold said they still wanted the rabbit, and the red head hung up the phone, she looked at me and shrugged, and didnt say anything. None of the staff members even APOLOGIZED for this event. It is unacceptable, unprofessional, and completely unfair to me. I now not only have to return everything I just purchased, including a cage my husband took 40 minutes to set up, but I also have to deal with the heartache and disappointment that the bunny I fell in love with and planned to take home today is no longer mine. This shelter needs to have a serious chat and re-training of their terrible staff. What a complete and utter disappointment.
