My son had an allergic reaction to an active ingredient (dextromethorphan) in a cough syrup which caused him to be very hyper, talkative and increased his pulse at times to nearly 190. I called our family pediatrician, who had no open appointments, and she recommended Wellstone because they were open 24/7. Upon arriving, the staff were very welcoming and we relayed the information about my son and the fact we could not get him in to our Dr. who in turn made this recommendation. They evaluated him and chose to admit him because of the symptoms. When my sons symptoms were gone after about three days and I was told he was doing better,so I inquired about taking him home, which they frowned upon suggesting its better if we monitor him a little longer. I later found out that my insurance authorized coverage through a five more days. The Psychiatrist attending to my son (who had met him once) suggested that my son needed to start a med called risperdal and they wanted to have him take a ct scan. I advised the case worker since my son was ok and feeling better that I would take him home and schedule an appointment with our pcp and I would not authorize a psyc drug over an allergic reaction. The social worker disagreed and said that the psyc would not release him at this point and suggested I allow them to transport my son to the hospital for ct scan and afterwards the psyc would allow discharge afterwards. Two days later Wellstone sent my son and an aid in a cab to the hospital for the ct and I met them there. As I was talking to the aide, she said my son didnt seem like he belonged in Wellstone. My son told me about asking for chap stick for his dry lips at Wellstone and staff telling him to shut up and lay down. Furthermore, threatening my son with actions that would lead to him being kept there longer. After hearing this, stories from ex employees at Wellstone and a local MD, my mind was made up to remove my son from Wellstone. After the ct I went to Wellstone and advised them I wanted to withdraw my son from there. The rn on his unit met me in the waiting area and said he could not be released until the next day and I should come back then. I told her I would not and she needed to bring him to me or I was going to get him myself. She then said she could not release him without the psyc agreeing to it and paperwork completed. I told her that wasnt acceptable. She then said she would call the psyc. Upon returning the rn told me to come back five hours later and she would have him ready. (I found out that if my son was kept there for the time she stated, Wellstone stood to make more money from my insurance) I said no, my son and I would leave and I would come back and sign the paperwork if needed. The rn then threatened by saying I would have to AMA my son out of there causing me to be liable for over $10,000 because my insurance would not cover that type of discharge. I contacted my insurance company and they advised me that the rns statement was not true. I told the rn I was uncomfortable with my experience there and she needed to bring me my son this very second, I was leaving. She did and we left. I would never recommend this facility to anyone, they are concerned about money and milking insurance companies for all they can.

This is what I call HELLSTONE, they treat you awful, most staff is rude, and You are told you can sign out AMA, DONT do it then they will keep you another 48-72 hours. I was lied to, made fun of and like to play mind games with you. They shine a mag flashlight in your eyes every 15 minutes to make sure you still alive, an in my case after I tried to escape they had me on unit restriction and couldnt eat with anyone else. I had a nurse outside my bedroom (which had dead bugs everywhere ) shining the light on my eyes every 5 minutes, they torture you, Physically, mental and emotionally abuse you in anyway thy think is possible. When I tried to escape out the cafeteria I went to the wrong door and ended up trying to fight on of with that and another came from know where and hit my back, neck and back of my head, they knocked me out from behind, y neck, back and head was hit. They put everyone on drugs to keep everything calmed down, I stopped taking my meds and they still dont know how I did it. If you are not truly crazy when you go in you will be insane if you ever get out. I was covered from had to toe with bruises from the abuse. DONT EVER TAKE anyone you care about there. I heard voices while in there on their meds out in the real world I hear normal thing. It is a place that scams the state of Indiana. My prescriptions were called in to Wal-Mart and Wal-Mart didnt have it but the cost of 2 prescriptions would have been $ 1200 a month! This is a experimental hospital and ripping of the state of Indiana. I have a attorney for that and a few other things that have happened. I would give them 0 stars if that was the choice. They kept me there 11 days! Dont take your loved ones there, I have to seek REAL Psychiatric help and therapist after being at HELLSTONE. I would have rather been in hell then tto ever go back there. I thought I was going to leave that hospital in a Body Bag. I still have nightmares about that place.

My experience was brief but good. I would return in the future if necessary. On a different note, I did want to remind readers to take the negative reviews with a grain of salt. It is entirely possible that they are true. Remember, though, that people like me and others who check in to psychiatric hospitals are there for a reason. They are often emotionally unstable as a result, and they see life and their experiences in it through a negative filter. They cant help it. This would of course affect any review theyd give. Also, remember this hospital treats thousands of patients and there are only two reviews, both negative, which is the only reason people bother to write reviews -- to vent. If you are a parent, and your child is having a severe and potentially dangerous reaction, you should probably go to an urgent care facility or even the ER. A psych hospital was a questionable recommendation from a PCP. If any complaints result, direct them that way, and not a hospital that has standards and procedures in place to protect patients from leaving the facility early, potentially putting them at risk for a lot of things, including self harm. Remember, not all patients can make rational decisions, and when it comes to children, they need to be extra cautious. And who knows, maybe PCPs tell people to take their kids to psych hospitals because they suspect there is a psychiatric component to that bizarre behaviour -- a question that should be asked.
