The short story ... My wife went from ventilator dependant to ventilator free in 10 days. Kindred staff swept my wife into their care and day by day I watched them skillfully and casually wean her off the vent. If you need ventilator weaning (perhaps with one or several coexisting conditions), you would be remiss if you didnt check out Kindred first. If nothing else, they will set the standard that all other facilities you visit, will have to meet. The longer story ...After an illness required us to find a ventilator weaning facility for my wife, alongside physical therapy, the uncertainty was overwhelming. Website reviews of places only exacerbated the situation, so we started going on tours. Some places were horrible, some were good, and others were not exactly suited for ventilator weaning. And then there was Kindred; a national LTACH we heard often weans patients off the vent, well before they finish any physical therapy. A visit to Kindred Wayne revealed a pleasant setting on the 8th floor of St.Josephs hospital; a plus in the event of any other medical emergency. The place is super clean, organized, buzzing with activity, with a small country hospital feel. Kindred specializes in ventilator weaning, which is exactly what we were looking for. An unscheduled conversation with Diana (nurse manager) and Robyn (director of rehab) lasted a half hour and put us at ease. I found them sincerely interested in my wifes condition, our concerns, and expectations. They were extremely knowledgeable about her illness, and the planned approach that is usually taken. My daughter and I looked at each other in the elevator as we left, both thinking the same thing ... Kindred was for us. The doctors, respiratory, therapy, and nursing staff make you feel like family, easing your fears as they work their science, a lot of the time in the background. Everyday my wife was awarded some sort of victory no matter how small, which built up her confidence and determination. Over the course of a day, staff file in and out of my wifes room to say "Hi" whether assigned to her or not. We have constant access to the heads of all departments, and can open up a dialog with them at will. This place is very well run. After 10 days the vent was removed from my wifes room. A huge victory for our family, and well before her PT was done ...perfect. During her stay, it was like my wife was the most important resident of a little town called Kindred. We are so grateful that they have far exceeded our expectations, and have given her back her breath, independence, and confidence. My wife will never forget the names of her individual heroes. My family will never forget hearing her voice for the first time ...again. - Steve Walker

These people are shyster scumbags. My mom was at ORMC in middletown NY and a representative from Kindred wayne came to her hospital room to solicit her to come to Kindred wayne. They told her if she came to Kindred Wayne she would not be responsible for anything financially. She immediately said to them that doesnt make any sense nothing is for free and they told her for every bed they fill medicare gives them x amount of dollars for every day the bed is filled and this is why it would be free. She went and it of course was not free and in addition she was there for 7 days and they billed her for 10 to a tune of 6000 she owes them. This hospital does not offer charity care and when I spoke to a representative and explained to them the situation and the rep told her it would be free they said prove it. Do not take your loved one to this disgrace of an institution. They need to be investigated and shut down.

A family member just concluded a months stay at Kindred Hospital in Wayne, NJ. and the treatment he received there was exceptional. He required close and consistent wound care along with all the other medical monitoring thats part of any hospital stay, and in every respect his care exceeded even our own high expectations. No hospital excels without a first rate staff, and the staffing at Kindred from the internist to the podiatry surgeon, to the nurses, the aids, the physical therapists and the occupational therapists... all were unfailingly skillful, compassionate and attentive. The case manager was endlessly forthcoming when we needed her guidance in our decision making. Kindred even arranges for transportation for family members coming from out of state. Nobody wants to be in the hospital, but when circumstance requires it, you cant do better than choosing Kindred/Wayne.

I will start by saying that this place really cares and works Very Hard to make you and your loved ones feel cared for!. My mom was there a month and each and every Dr, nurse, specialist, social work, and staff that worked with my mother was GREAT. We were there each and every day and that it made a difference! Not only to be there for my mom, but to get to know everyone. Each Dr./ Specialist and Nurse went out of their way to listen to our concerns and issues and we as a Team worked together to manager her care and do whatever was in her best interest to get her well. Thank you Kindred and all the staff of Wayne for all that you did to respect and support us and my mom. She is on her way to recovery. !!!!

My wife underwent open heart surgery at a major NYC hospital, but after 5 weeks in the ICU she remained ventilator dependent. After much research and recommendations from from her doctors we chose Kindred in Wayne, NJ for ventilator weaning and Im so happy we did. After 3 weeks she was removed from the ventilator and a week later her cannula was removed for good. We owe much to the expertise of the Kindred staff; to Marlon, her respiratory therapist who inspired needed trust and Robyn, head of rehabilition who gave needed encouragement and specific information at the appropriate time to enable success. We unconditionally recommend Kindred to anyone needing ventilator weaning and rehabilitation. Alan Schenberg.

My mom was at Kindred Wayne Hospital for two weeks. She was ventilator dependent when she entered. The plan was to wean her off gently. The care my mom received on a daily basis was amazing. Every need that was a concern to me was addressed, from pillow positioning to cleaning, from machine beeping to explaining every procedure and medication given. The nurses and techs were available all day long, even at night. I admire and appreciate the loving care my mom was given. It was a comfort to know that i was leaving my mom in such a warm and caring environment. I would highly recommend Kindred Hospital to anyone looking for a special place for a special someone.
