I received excellent care and attention from P.A. Tracy Rentner who convinced me to not become frustrated with a difficult to diagnose chronic illness and work with another in-house physician. I felt as though the new physician did not hear me and when their referral department dropped the ball on scheduling an important test I became upset and wrote a letter to the referring physician. I soon received an irate call from the referral coordinators supervisor who proceeded to tell me how unappreciative I was and that the referral service was only offered as a free service to their customers. I ended up making the appointment myself. During my next visit with my doctor he told me "to not write any more letters". I was humiliated, but felt like I had little choice but to shut my mouth and be grateful that they were helping me at all. I was in the process of filing for short-term disability and really needed my doctor to handle all of the correspondence with my employer’s insurance company. I did not want to rub him the wrong way. Imagine my surprise when I ordered and began to read the notes from this doctor. I was shocked to see that he made sure he placed my comments to him in quotation marks, even if the comments were inaccurate. I believe some of his colleagues were perhaps sympathetic to my cause, as at least one physician would make it a point to write into the notes that I was a "pleasant and kind person". One of my chief complaints with my disease is extreme fatigue. I asked this doctor if he could prescribe anything for it. He calmly said "I could give you meth". I was embarrassed, but pretended to laugh it off. I dealt with this fatigue for months before I found out about a drug called Provigil which specifically treats fatigue or somulence. Once told about the medication he did prescribe it. I now have a new doctor who seems to be genuinely concerned about my well-being. Perhaps this can be chalked up to bad chemistry. I dont know. I will never fail to follow my conscious again where something as important as my health is concerned again.
