We have been coming here for a long time and except for dealing with a difficult manager and receptionist, we have been very satisfied. That changed when our 10 month old golden retriever was neutered at this facility. We were not informed when we scheduled the appointment that he would have to stay overnight so I was not happy when I dropped him off to learn I couldnt get him until the next day. I didnt bring his food and he is on a special diet. I asked if I could bring him home the same day and was told Id have to talk to the vet or manager. The manager called after surgery and said everything went fine. I requested I be able to pick him up and was told no they have rules and keep all dogs overnight. I called several local veterinarians and asked if they require dogs to stay overnight and all said NO they do not keep neuter procedures overnight. I researched online as well and the protocol is for dogs being neutered to go home the same day unless there are complications. We did not want our dog to stay overnight. He has never been caged and we strongly believed he would be better off at home. My daughter is a doctor so I felt comfortable having her monitor him. And there were no complications. Yet Boston Heights REFUSED to let him go home. I asked to speak to Dr. Thorson and he never called me. I spoke repeatedly to the manager, Jeff. He was rude and condescending. We decided to get there before they closed and take our dog home regardless of their "rules". We gave them a signed release assuming all responsibility. They did not feed him at 3:00 pm as they said they would. When they brought him from the kennel he was covered in poop and urine and did not have his collar or leash. They looked for these items and said theyd find them and call me in the morning. They did not call me and when I called them the next day, they insisted they gave them to me. Two staff members looked for our leash and collar when I initially picked up so they know very well they have them yet they told me the next day they gave them to me! I again spoke with the manager requesting they return these items and he hung up on me. When we picked him up they said we could not come back - as if we would! They did not give me any pain meds for him, they did not feed him, they kept my property, he came home filthy, they refused to let him leave and I had to insist repeatedly. What a horrible experience. The staff was unfriendly, unprofessional, uncooperative, and not willing to listen to me.

First of all Im going to start this review by saying that Dr. Thorson is the best vet EVER. My family has been going to this vet for about 40 years. So this review actually makes me really sad to write it. Over the course of the last few years the front desk has absolutely ruined their business. They have know idea what they are talking about half the time, cannot EVER get you in, in a timely matter. Today I had an experience that DOES NOT sit well with me. I called today for an appt because half of my dogs face was swollen out of nowhere. I was extremely concerned. She tried to stray me away from scheduling and actually told me to just give him Benadryl. I tried to explain to her that I dont feel like this is a Benadryl case but I had already given him some anyways. (Not sure when the receptionists started giving out medical advice without consulting the doc, because thats never been the case) I live 30 minutes away and they wanted me to drive out and drop him off to "work him in" so in order to do that I would be driving for 2 hours just to have his eye looked at. This normally wouldnt be a problem, but EVERYTIME Ive had an emergency situation in the last few years.. this is their solution. I asked the girl if there was anything else that could be done or if I could just wait in the office... I told her it was pretty inconvenient to do this and explained the driving, her solution and response was "maybe its time you find another vet then" I was really hurt by this comment. I told her in my opinion it was not her business to decide if I wanted to go to another vet. She then tried to back herself out of that comment and I told her that she was very rude and had no right to say this. She kept carrying on so I said well if Im going to get myself together in time to make the drop off time then I need to get off the phone now so I will bring him by 9:30 and I hung up. Of course she completely lied to the guy that runs the place (Jeff) and basically when he called I thought he was going to smooth things over, but instead he sided with her and said maybe I SHOULD find another vet. Again I couldnt be more hurt or disgusted by this. I absolutely love Dr. thorson and its sad that this incompetent person is running his front and talking to patients in this tone. Then of course LYING about the situation. One other thing she lied about was that I "slammed the phone down and hung up on her" who in 2017 has a phone that SLAMS DOWN? I have an iPhone thank you very much.

We have been going here for 31+ years and love this place. Through the years we have seen changes in ownership/Vets/staff--but these things have remained constant here....the level of skill, care, knowledge and compassion. From new puppies and a kitten (everybody has that one time....dont judge!) all the way to the many times we were faced with making those final decisions--BHVH has been there for us....and let us sob & "take as much time as you need". The entire staff is SO kind and professional! I have always felt secure about boarding my dogs there as well. From scary (to me!) surgeries to educating me how to give insulin shots (what you get for having a cat!) and making me comfortable with how to transition to providing geriatric care to my animals--I have learned so much and to them I am thankful. If I was a Labrador? I would entrust them with my life, too!

If you are looking for a new vet, dont go to BHVH so you save yourself from a bad experience in the long run. Everything is sunshine until you have to bring up some issues like overcharged bill or something else you did not find quite right. It does not matter that you were a good & friendly customer for many years who never had any complaint. Before they resolved my concern they asked me to leave BHVH. They are customer unfriendly. Long term tenure staff appears to be a clique, dont expect resolution from manager. I was mistreated, humiliated and insulted at this practice over a reasonable concern I brought up regarding an unexpected large bill and an unscheduled exam. Dr. Thorsen may be a good vet, but he appears to condone bad administrative behavior.

All I can say is that Dr. Thorson and his staff are amazing. My dog had a horrible accident and needed immediate surgery. A friend referred me to him and his entire staff and himself made us feel amazing. He put all aside and did the surgery the next day, not even knowing us. His compassion for animals and humans are equal. He is my type of vet and person. I have never felt more blessed for how they went out of their way to comfort our anxiety of her surgery and being away for days. We are truly grateful and everyone should go see him!!
