I went to the Pittsburgh VA for a physical and to quit smoking with Chantix. Everything seemed fine (except for the first time they had trouble drawing blood). However, after a few weeks I still didnt have my prescription. My wife had her prescription thru a civilian doctor weeks ago. I made several calls, and thru a social worker found out the provider put the request in wrong. This went on for about four months. Finally, I got the prescription. I took the pill, quit smoking, and as I was almost finished with the 30 day supply, no refill. I called, and again the scrip was put in wrong. This time I talked to a nurse (I think) and they said theyd get it fixed. He was very rude and wanted me to set up a follow-up appointment. At this point, I wouldnt trust the VA to fix a scraped knee. Two weeks later, Im out of Chantix and still no refill. Imagine if this was blood pressure meds or something serious--Id be dead. The one bright spot was Sarah, the OIF social worker. She is the only reason I gave them an extra star. She worked tirelessly to cut through the red tape, and is the only reason I got the prescription in the first place. They need more people like her. Bottom line, the Pittsburgh VA seems to be run more like a dysfunctional military personnel center than a hospital. Perhaps if they were run like a hospital with less red tape they would regain the trust of veterans.

A combination of incompetence and laziness is why I have to continuously go to the ER multiple times for the same problem and still have yet to receive a correct diagnosis, nor have I received follow-up appointments. I went in for my back and it was treated like a muscle problem when any medical rookie could tell its a spinal problem. Though they never took an MRI or X-rays to even find out. Combined with poor & slow service makes this location not worth going to in a real emergency. I have and will however document every visit and future visits for legal reasons later down the road. Its an insult to my military service and the entire Armed Forces and benefits Ive more than earned for my part in the Global War on Terrorism. Sad it is. Nice building though, waste of tax dollars probably.

From 04/18/2017: Beautiful courtyard, large sunlit lobby, easy check-in kiosks, and helpful Information Desk. The main elevators (past the Information Desk to the left) are often quite busy in the morning, especially coming up from whatever is in the basement level. They were serving popcorn in the lobby during late morning the day I was there. After using the lobby kiosks (on your left as you walk in the main front doors) to check in I headed upstairs where I had to check in again at another kiosk, then had to check in again with the desk clerk. Seems a bit repetitive? The doctor I saw was wonderful, attentive, and really cared. I never made it to the café or gift shop. Overall an excellent experience.

I dont like anything about this VA. It is the worst VA hospital I have been to. I came from another VA to this one. They either cant get my meds right or they claim the VA has never carried them or they havent seen them prescribed in 20 years. When I have been receiving my medications from the VA for 6 years. Once they find out you take narcotic medication they get on the phone for most of your appointment accusing yout of being a drug addict. Not answering any of your other concerns or issues. They also act like they are reading from a script. Not caring about the veteran just their own asses. They say the are the best in the country but I have yet to see it!

I spent 7 days in the facility for the implant of a dorsal spine stimulator in Feb 2015. I went back in July 2015 for surgery on my right hand, and will return at the end of Jan 2016, for surgery on my other hand. The staff and doctors are excellent, par none. I live 215 miles away in WV, so I take a shuttle. They made sure that I made it okay to the shuttle and when my surgery in July went later than usual, they made sure I made it completely home. Everyone at the facility does their best under overcrowded circumstances, to care for us. This is a first rate facility.

I have been going to the new facility for over two years. Not only is it a new facility but new positive attitudes. I am retired Army and have been to active duty health care facilities. Pittsburghs VA Facility is one of the best. Their employees, many of them Vets themselves make the difference. There a few with bad attitudes but they are far and few between
