Original review in 4/7/07 oddly disappeared Best was owner of vet called us repeatedly & threaten a lawsuit for writing this 100% truthful review. Here is is again... Our vet closed 10 min prior to Fri PM accident & closed Sat - Easter weekend; FORCED on this vet. Dog admitted @ 6:15p w/paralysis in hind legs Mark McKenzie didnt see us until 7 - "1st come 1st served" NOT by medical condition. Mark NOT surgeon = unable to perform necessary test (mylegram) to determine if surgery needed. Mark told us on-call surgeon Lori Ludwig would do @ 8 next AM (Lori REFUSED to come in or talk to me & when questioned waiting (time of the essence w/spinal cord injury; recovery greater if done w/in 1st 12hrs after accident) Lori told Mark to tell me she is board certified & not me). Called @ 9:10A for results - test not done = Lori NOT in yet! Immediately called other vets & JA SPCA ? ALL advised her actions unacceptable & expressed shock over wait! JA SPCA advised me to call director of N Chuck office & inform of situation. Adrianne Sprovero then called to recant Mark?s conversation w/me Lori would not perform test until she saw dog even though Mark saw the dog and gave her a full report and previously to me this test would be done at 8A Sat. 10A Lori finally called; finally performing test 15 hrs after accident! While test was completed; it was never read by radiologist thus her findings could easily be inaccurate. One vet told us Lori known for her Northeast arrogance; ticked off many other parents & even though I have never been to this other local vet it was he & not the people we pd $2k to that gave us a cell phone # if we had any questions over the holiday weekend plz remember she refused to talk to me and walk me through our concerns. Lori left for the day/weekend w/out so much as a phone call or to relay follow up care for our partially paralyzed dog nothing about how to combat bed sores, options for physical therapy nothing except a bill for $2k!

Long waits; woefully understaffed; general chaos, generally disinterested, high prices, poor instructions on post visit care, misleading/wrong potentially fatal instructions on syringes given for me to take home and administer. Both the Vet and the tech looked away from me for a portion of the the few minutes they gave me. In fact, the last statement made by the Vet (Dr Marcario) were made as she was walking out the door. The other stuff she said was spoken at a rapid fire rate of speech about 3 times what I (or anyone else) could understand, much less understand. The standard amount of time a medical doctor give you, pursuant to Medicare guidelines is 12 minutes. This Vet (Dr Marcario) was in the room with me for about 4 minutes. Their charge was substantially above the charge allowed by Medicare for a visit with a medical doctor that is 3 times the time allowed me by this Vet (Dr Marcario)....after a nearly 2 hour wait. And, to make matters worse, when I came back the next day to seek clarification on administering the medication, I was told that there would be another lengthy wait before someone would do what they should have done the day before. And, I would call your special attention to the fact that there were several people in the waiting room with me that were unhappy and, when I related my experience to a neighbor who has several animals, she said "I wish you had asked me before you went there. They are awful. They have a terrible reputation. And finally, pay careful attention to the rating given to them by a couple of medical doctors. My advice: Stay away from there and stay away from Dr Macario In fact,

We brought our 5 month old lab in because he was screaming in pain. When we arrived, we were the only patients in the waiting room. The wait to get back was lengthy, considering he was screaming. Once in the back, a technician came in to help us. She mentioned how what was happening to our dog looked very similar to what happened to her dog. We believed he was having excruciating growing pains, also referred to as Panosteitis. That is exactly what she said her dog had. Eventually the vet came in and immediately started saying that she believed our dog had an autoimmune disorder or a nerve disorder and that they would need to keep him overnight then ship him off to an internalist the next morning where they would probably do muscle biopsies along with many other tests. After telling us that, she quickly said we should open up the credit card that they have there so we can pay for it. After scaring us to the point where we though our dog had some insane disorder, she acted on our emotions and told us we should open a credit card. We decided to take him home and manage his pain there, along with giving him an antibiotic and anti inflammatory. 2 days later, he was 100%. He has been ever since. When you look up the definition of Panosteitis, it perfectly describes what happened to our puppy. EXACTLY. I just want to thank the technician that helped us that night. She was the only person that didnt take advantage of us at a vulnerable time.

Mon, 05/23/2016: I took my Dachshund to our general veterinarian assuming she was extremely constipated. Not long after arriving at my vets office, I learned it was not constipation, but was a major spinal concern where time was a factor and I needed to take her to the ER immediately. My vets office referred me to Veterinary Specialty Care in Mt. Pleasant (I live downtown); I drove right over to VSC, and my vet had called ahead to inform them of my issue and that I was on my way. VSC was 100% aware that I was there to see the neurologist, as my vet had told them. After filling out paperwork and sitting in the lobby for just over 25 minutes, a nurse came out and told me the neurologist wasnt there and wouldnt be there all week. Generally, that wouldnt have been a bad wait to see the neurologist, but to sit there for 25 minutes with an animal who has a time-factored major injury only to be told no one could help me and that Id have to go all the way over to West Ashley was unacceptable on all levels. I am very disappointed with this facility. I was scared and stressed, and I have never felt more like a number than a name. I will never return to this facility and I would discourage others from doing so.

If I could select additional stars, I would! I cannot sing the praises of Veterinary Specialty Care loudly enough. This was the best medical experience I have ever had and that includes anything I have ever had done for myself or my dog, Roma. Roma is the love of my life and it was a very difficult decision to have several lipomas removed and also a cyst between her toes. She is 11 years old and I felt that removing the large lipoma in her armpit would increase her mobility in years to come, but was very afraid of having her go through the surgery at her age. Dr. Ludwig not only consulted with me, but answered follow-up questions and concerns by email prior to the surgery. We were met with love and genuine care and concern the day of Romas surgery. Dr. Ludwig called me 3x that day to give me updates and allowed me to take Roma home that evening. Dr. Ludwigs skill at removing the large lipoma was amazing. I was in the medical device field for 14 years and have never seen a more precise excision. It is rare that you find a group that has equal skill and caring and I feel very blessed to have found those qualities in this clinic.
