EDIT: It seems that maybe this place has changed management since my following review. Although nice people, I feel the doctor here is WAY out of date. Took my cat with a lump in her neck. He told me that because cats lives are quicker, growths like hers will grow accordingly as fast. Like, since a cat has a 4th less years than us things like tumors will grow 4 times as fast. I asked him to explain this multiple times, arguing that it didnt make sense and he insisted. The most tragic loss, however, was our papillon dogs misdiagnosis, which lead to her ultimate death. Avia was suffering from what seemed to be a urinary tract infection. We took her in and she was prescribed mediation accordingly. THREE times we came back for the same thing because the symptoms only worsened. The doctor refused to give her any more tests, claiming it was surely a uti. He refused to have her x-rayed, stating that they dont really do that for animals anymore. What? They dont x-ray animals anymore? What I think he meant to say was "we dont want to use the x-ray machine, or dont have one and I need to justify that with some BS story." Poor doggie was suffering horribly so we took her to VCNA in Fox Chapel. Within MOMENTS the doctor there diagnosed her with bladder stones, showing us how she could FEEL them through her skin. At that point it was too far gone and Avia was put to sleep then and there. He didnt even feel her bladder for stones and as a result she is no longer with us. Insult to injury: I notified werntz of our loss and the misdiagnosis and that we would never be returning. We had our record transferred to VCNA never wanted to hear from them again. A few months later, however, we received a reminder to bring our dead dog in for her shots. A painful oversight on their part. This guy is nice but hes an effing quack. I wouldnt trust him with anything more than shots and check ups.

I will never take my pets anywhere else, ever again! This place is the best Ive ever encountered. The staff are absolutely wonderful. Gloria, Shelly, Scott, and Dr. Sherer are the most wonderful people. Our poor little Remy kitty had a urinary tract infection for his first time ever. We called them on a Saturday and Gloria was so sweet, allowing us to bring Remy in that Monday. They allowed us to drop Remy off in the morning on our way to work and pick him up afterwards, which was VERY convenient. Dr. Sherer called that afternoon to explain what he found on the sonogram and asked if he could perform an x-ray, a urine culture, and urinalysis. I agreed after he explained everything in full detail and a breakdown of all the costs. Once I picked Remy up that evening, Dr. Sherer explained everything in full detail again advising of his suspicions Remy had an infection of his bladder and urinary tract. He provided us with Clavamox, an antibiotic similar to Amoxicillin for humans, and two syringes to push the medicine in Remys mouth twice a day. Overall, the services that were provided were stellar, top notch and the staff were the friendliest people I have met in a very long time. The bill for ALL of their services and the medicine was extremely reasonable and not overpriced whatsoever. Especially in comparison to the "emergency vets" in Monroeville and on Camp Horne Rd. I would never go there. Now I can completely understand why this business has been operating since 1919! We even got a friendly "welcome" card in the mail a week later signed by the staff! I highly recommend this animal hospital over anywhere else in Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas. I can report that Remy is doing excellent now! Thank you Werntz!

I have been taking my cannine companions to Werntz Memorial Animal Hospital for over 12 years. I have found Dr Burghard and his wife to be very knowledgeable and personalable during all our visits. When my companion Giz became ill in her senior years they were very compassionate administering meds and care for her. They handled the arrangements for her cremation. When a neighbor was unable to care for her dog I adopted Daisy.I took Daisy to Wertnz for the personal care I knew she would receive. I have not been disappointed. We havent had any appointments with Dr Sherer but I have no doubt that he possesses love for animals as Dr Burghard has. Shelly who manages the office has always been very pleasant and accommodating. She is sure to give the best price on meds and include coupons for future purchases. The staff has been friendly and polite as well. I would highly recommend Werntz Memorial Animal Hospital for the care of your animal companion.

Unfortunately, our poor pup has struggled with health issues more than the average dog his age BUT FORTUNATELY, weve experienced working with 2 great vets. Both are very thorough in their examinations and the care they demonstrated towards our dog was amazing. We had more time with Dr. Sherer, whom I cannot thank enough for his knowledge, recommendations, and compassion. He truly wanted the best for our dog and yet took into account our financial restraints to offer varying options for treatment. The staff always called to check in after an appointment, which was a very nice gesture. Due to allergies in the family, weve had to make the tough choice to find a new home for our dog. Dr. Sherer and the staff were very accommodating in giving me all the information I needed to transfer to the new vet. I would highly recommend coming to this office. They will treat both you and your pet with respect!

Cant say enough about this place. When we got two dogs two years ago, we chose Werntz as our vet of choice as we used to bring my childhood dog here about fifteen years ago. The great care we received then is still the same great care we receive today. As with two young, big dogs, vet visits can tend to be more on the energetic, crazy side. But everyone at Werntz shows exceptional patience and understanding every time we bring them through the door. Both Dr. Sherer and the entire staff are willing to help with our concerns and questions, whether it be in person or on the phone, whether the issues are big or small. You can really tell how much they love animals during every interaction and I truly believe that our dogs are receiving the best care. Would highly recommend others to bring their pets to this vet.

Took my first time baby pup to you guys for an initial checkup, I felt so at ease. Everyone was sooooo kind and knowledgeable!! They took their time w/ my puppy, since hes a mommas boy and super finicky. They were wonderful, helped answer all of my questions, and took the time to make my dog feel safe and at ease. Im so happy i picked this place as my vet, it seems like a great place, and will be my future vet home for as long as my baby is living.

This place is absolutely wonderful. They have always handled me and my partners pets woth so much care and respect. The first time I met Dr Scherer he asked me what I did for a living. When I responded by telling him I work with potentially violent mental health patients he thanked me for everything I do at my job. SO COURTEOUS and RESPECTFUL!!! Never felt over charged for their services and always felt confidant with their abilities.
