This place is by far the WORST division of any of St.Davis net of hospitals, and how can it not, the staff is totally rude (starting with the Manager Michelle, described as tall blonde below b/c she refuses to give you her name) and uncaring both on an informational stand point to worried friends/relatives and on a medical one, were it seems that "Medical Evaluation Periods" supersede any previous ACCREDITED DOCTOR order. My sister was just transferred to the Austin Lakes hospital from Brackenridge over panic attacks and depression. When you try to call the phone number you dont know what extension to dial and most of the extensions dont answer. There are no recordings or voice instructions. They are unprepared when they receive new patient transfers. They do not follow pre existing medications, and by such, I dont speak of anxiety pills and such, I speak of such important medications such as blood thinners. They supposively have a 48-72hr EVALUATION period, however nobody is evaluating anyone, the hallway staff simply checks up on patients to ensure they are not missing, they dont have a psychologist or psychiatrist on duty who can offer support chats to those in need, they dont even give them the anxiety medications to help them during the horrible experience of being there. There is no entertainment or activities to distract them from their thoughts and feelings. All patients are together, regardless of their classification....therefore you have Sane people who suffer depression with actual patients that reflect violent behavior. When you bring your concerns to the table and express a complaint or safety concern for your loved one, they kick you out and ban you. As punishment for pissing the Manager Michelle off, they will ban all your relatives/patients visits. This woman Michelle after kicking us out and banning all visits as punishment, had the nerve to threaten my sister by saying: "Thanks to what you caused today, Ill make sure you spend at least 10 days here." So I ask, the City of Austin sends people here because it is supposed to keep them safe....how can you entrust them with keeping your loved one safe when you dont even trust the caregivers and people who are in charge of running this place? SOMEONE NEEDS TO SHUT THIS PLACE DOWN OR MAKE SERIOUS STAFF CHANGES FOR THE SAKE OF PATIENTS AND THEIR WORRIED FAMILIES.

Stayed here twice. Not perfect but I dont believe this place deserves the low star rating it has so Im leaving this review. People normally get on sites to review things just to complain. I dislike the billing guy when you checkout (not sensitive to emotional fragility of a person involuntarily committed for suicide attempt with financial issues due to mental illness but whatever he will probably end up working in another industry some day because he has no empathy and is the one person there not there to help people so Im assuming he will tire of that job and move on). He was somewhat affable the second visit at least. I still chose to come back. It wasnt terrible, they try to do what they can with what they have. The staff are very nice people. You have to take into consideration that this is not an exact science. They really helped me through a lot twice in the past year. Way To go. Also the group counselors are very nice but I couldnt always handle going and being in a crowded room. Also you are very safe there. There is surveillance and constant checkins with staff asking your name and condition and taking vital signs. I found the best bipolar regimen of medication Ive ever had prescribed at this hospital. The doctors are very good at what they do. Before going to this hospital I was prescribed useless meds and had absolutely no direction or concept of where I could go for help in the "outside world."

Had urinary rentention due to new medication I received while at Austin Lakes. Was given flow max to help the situation but it didnt fix the problem. The techs and nurses did not believe that I couldnt relief myself and would not let me go to the emergency room to get a folic catheter, who asks for that if its not a dire situation... They lied to me saying the emt was on the way for over 5 hours, mean while I begged in the worst pain of my life to get them to hurry. The emergency room is literally down the hall!! The bladder can only hold 1 liter of urine, by the time I got to the emergency room at st. Davids they drained 2.5 liters! I could have died. They then discharged me the next day without even showing me how to stay off infections... Worst experience Ive ever had.

I was a patient at the Lakes twice a few years ago and it has taken me all this time to finally comment on my experience. It was horrible!!!! The PICU was so unsupervised that a patient was hitting a nurse on the head with a telephone and no one came to her assistance. People were urinating and defecating on the floor, running around naked, and screaming all night. I was in PICU for 3 days and it felt like the old mental health treatment when people were chained to the wall. The facility is dirty and the staff very unprofessional. There were no activities planned for the weekends, like movies or group therapy. Visitors were few. This place is worse than Shoal Creek and it is no picnic there either.

The hospital is in serious need of remodeling, but is not terrible. Its very laid back, and I loved that (other hospitals are super strict with schedules). The personnel is great (especially a new social worker they had), the food is alright (they respected my "lactose intolerance"), and they give the meds in a timely manner. I believe I had a great recovery during my five day stay at ALH. Out of all the mental hospitals I had been (one in Wisconsin, two other in Texas, and one military) this one is the most relaxed of all of them. Someone said that men and women arent segregated, and that is true; they dont do that, and there is no actual reason to do so (except for rooming accommodations).

Very dirty and unsupervised. Depressing. Limited staff for watching or monitoring. Only 2 people to monitor and one had to be stationed at the door exit. These are mentally ill patients and highly flammable! My son has schizophrenia and believes people after him and theres no telling what the other patients suffer from. I never saw a camera where they could monitor or record situations. Very alarming! Tables and floors in the back room area for eating and visiting were dirty, Food spills on the table and floor. They dont have a sink to wash the tables or hands. No paper towels, napkins or hand wipes. We had to sit at a table with food antable with food spills when we were visiting.

Horrible and mean staff, they should be trained better, or find different professions. Theyre not nurturing or caring. Especially Dealing with people who have mental disorders . Please if you have a mental disorder,or problem go somewhere else. They look at you like youre an animal. They do not CARE.This hospital should not treat mental disorders, they do not understand different people. Shame on this place.

Poor admissions process. They took my shoelaces and belt then put me and my mom in a waiting room with locked doors. We were not allowed to leave until I saw a doctor. Which took over an hour. Waiting room is dirty and Justin was a jerk! No one said "Hi" or "Someone will be right with you ". I was not allowed to leave even though I was there voluntarily.
