Frustrated with my previous vet (just so expensive, no consistent vet, long wait times for schedule appointment the majority of the time), I went to google and yelp for reviews and found this place ranked pretty highly and also close to my home (my cat HATES car rides, so that is important). They do a lot of surgeries, so appointment times are slim to come by but I mentioned my cat was older and had lost weight and they managed to work me in within a few days for an elder cat check up. The vet Dr. (Jason?) Wood saw me exactly at my appointment time, was personable, had a tech with him to help hold my cat in case he protested the exam (supposedly he was the model of good behavior comparatively), was efficient, gave me suggestions and options without pushing anything. I decided to have testing done, was amazed at the cost (much less than Id paid at previous vet), and was told to call back on Monday (today). I did, was on hold for less than a minute waiting for Dr. Wood to talk to me, got the results, helpful suggestions for where to buy medication... Ive only been there once, but I have to say, I was very impressed with the service. If you want a fancy place with wifi, dont go here. But if you want a vet that really seems to love animals, doesnt demand all sorts of tests, is up front (and accurate) about the costs, and runs on time---I have to say this is the place.

My Yorkie needed a teeth cleaning, and I was quoted $700 at another vet in town. Yikes!! His teeth were not bad either, so needless to say I was suffering sticker shock. Balcones performed the job for a pittance (my memory fails me- but it was under $100 bucks including meds) compared to that figure. Thats how these guys got my business. I took my Yorkie back the other day because he hasnt been his usual peppy self (you can bring your dog in at hints of illness knowing you can afford it). Dr. Woods told me he had an underactive thyroid, and with daily (inexpensive) meds, hes back to his old self. If he charged the same outlandish rates other vets do, my dog would probably still be suffering while I saved up my money to pay for the bill! The visit, including a blood panel which tested for illnesses other than thyroid function, was $104. How reasonable! Not to mention they are extremely nice to deal with and they keep my dog healthy! I NEVER write reviews, because quite frankly it takes a lot to impress me, but these guys are exceptional. They are truly animal friendly, by providing a great service at an extremely reasonable price, they provide services to animals whose owners cannot afford to pay high prices-no matter how much they love their pet. Ive used other vets in the past, and this one is the best. GO HERE!

The doctor here is nice but like right now my cat has been sneezing the past two days and because of it, I am taking her to McNeil Crossing Animal Clinic because they(Balcones) told me yesterday that I wouldnt be able to get her an appointment until next Wednesday afternoon?! What if my cat has some kind of respiratory infection that leads to pneumonia by then? No thanks..Ill go somewhere else. Apparently they think making you wait a week is acceptable. In fact, this is unacceptable! The front staff kept telling me its probably allergies....but I doubt it and they arent the doctor and they havent seen my cat so how would they know..My last vet in another city would always do anything and everything to see your pet and if she didnt have the time she would get me an appointment with another vet in town that had an opening. Also I took my dog in for her yearly shots a few weeks ago and they asked me if I wanted the vet to look over my dog...I always thought it was customary to give the animal a yearly exam with their shots. Thats how I found out my dog had a fractured tooth last year when I took her in. Unbelieveable..

I NEVER take the time to write reviews, however this is going to be a special case. I agree... this place, compared to other places Ive been, is decently priced and wont break your bank. However, Ive been there on several occasions and received horrible service. First of all, the staff does not have good phone etiquette. They were rude, impatient and not cooperative at all. It didn’t get much better when I actually went to the facility. One of the technicians came in and didn’t even introduce himself to my dog before he took her temperature! No “Hey puppy, how are you?” or any other words of comfort to her. The vet was nice, however he didn’t explain anything that was going on with my dog. Furthermore, I had to ask him about all of the shots that she needed too! Honestly, the only reason I would go back is because they aren’t as expensive as other places. Other than that… I would try to find somewhere else that is more gentle with your pet, likes their customers, and isn’t so busy that they are just trying to get you in and out of there as fast as possible.

My vet recently closed shop so when my 5 year-old Labrador sliced open one of his pads and begin bleeding heavily, I rushed the dog here. Opening the door, several of the office workers glanced at me and then headed back to their work. I walked up to the counter and politely insisted that my dogs injury was somewhat severe and that he needed help urgently (the bloody paw stains on the clinic floor made that clear, I thought). Finally, as the receptionist slowly, unconcernedly asked me for my personal information and my dog continued to bleed, I asked her "Did I come at a bad time?" I weighed the dog myself, walked him to one of the animal hospitals operating rooms, and helped put him on the table. After the surgery, I paid my bill, thanked the vet and got the heck out of there. Obviously, the other reviews are glowing and Im not sure what the explanation is. If youre deciding whether or not to go here, perhaps you should give this place the benefit of the doubt. I wont though, and I wont be back.

Ive taken my Golden Retriever to Balcones Animal Hospital since we got him as a puppy about a half year ago. It was my girlfriends and I first time owning a dog on our own and we were worried about the drain vet services were going to put on our wallets. Balcones has to be the best value for your dollar ANYWHERE. Not only did the father and son team take the time to go over basics on keeping our dog healthy, they provided us a list of common things we can buy in a grocery store to take care of his health for much less money than products you buy in pet stores. They took the time to answer all of our questions, and gave our dog some of the best care you could find anywhere. Because theyve got great service and theyre reasonable on price they do book up fast. Also the parking lot is pretty small so if you go take the smallest vehicle you have available or make an appointment for early in the morning.
