One of the four stray kittens in my backyard was taken to this hospital on 09/22/15 her name was Precious and she was 5 months old. Precious had not eaten for two days, was walking slowly and not acting herself. The doctor sedated the kitten in order to do an exam and blood test. I let him know that the kitten had never had any vaccines due to an upper respiratory virus. That afternoon the doctor called my boyfriend to tell him that the blood test came in and there were a lot of abnormalities in her blood. He went on to say that he could not find anything wrong with Precious. When my boyfriend went in to pick up the pet the doctor came out to greet him and let him know that he could not figure out what was wrong with her. My boyfriend told the doctor "so something is wrong, the cat hasnt eaten for two days and all of these readings are off, what is causing all of this?". The doctors exact answer was the following " I am as perplexed as you are". The doctor suggested that we try different foods to see if she would eat. After trying all kinds of foods and getting nowhere we felt that something very serious was going on. On 09/25/15 my boyfriend took Precious in to Town and Country Veterinary Hospital for a second opinion. At this point Precious had declined considerably and was not the same cat she used to be. After an examination and a blood test for possible diseases Precious tested positive for Feline Distemper (panleukopenia) the virus has a fatality rate of 90% is deadly and extremely contagious. Today is 09/28/15, three of the stray kittens have died from this illness including Precious. If only this virus was diagnosed sooner proper isolation and treatment would have started right away without wasting precious time against this deadly illness more lives would have been saved. Friend, learn from our experience and if your pet is sick DO NOT GO to Leon Valley Veterinary Hospital!!!

I took our kitten here for her first checkup. The vet seemed to be thorough and good at his job. Even though the prices were competitive and the vet knew what he was doing, I dont think this place is the right fit for me and my kitten. First, the office staff is chatty and childish. They were giggling a lot and seemed to take forever to schedule our next appointment and answer questions. I asked about the payment plan and never received a response. The front office staff reminded me of high school students. Second, there was a cat and dog running around the front office. While being a vet must have its perks, I do not think it is professional to bring your pets to work with you and expose them to sick animals. Third, the office was a mess and outdated. I used to volunteer at the Humane Society and even their records are digital and the office and kennels dont smell terrible. This vets office stunk and there were paper records falling off the shelves! There was hair everywhere and the floors and walls were filthy. The exam room was torn apart and did not have any supplies. The doors used were sliding wood doors and looked very cheap and didnt block sounds well. I just cant get over the smell. It gagged me at some points. Also, the front desk was a mess. Paperwork everywhere, outdated flyers, outdated promotions, and outdated fundraisers were scattered on the counter. It also was filthy. It is not that hard to take a Clorox wipe to a counter. Lastly, the vet tech that assisted him did not introduce herself and was meek and quiet. She just held my kitten down and disappeared after the shot was given. I know that animals dont talk, but humans do! Say hello, let us know who is touching our kitten, and what is going to happen to her! I think if the vet hired professionals to handle his front office, friendlier vet techs, and a cleaning crew to come in weekly, I would return.

Dr Meier and his staff at Leon Valley Vet Hospital are... well - there isnt a word to describe them. Family comes to mind. Trust as well. If they would start seeing human patients, Id be first in line. I have had several dogs of my own as well as foster dogs over the last few years and there is no one i would trust more than Dr Meier and his team. The level of care and service is ALWAYS impeccable. The prices are fair, and they are upfront and willing to work with you when necessary. I was out of town when my dog suffered a traumatic eye injury. The people watching my dog brought him to the emergency vet and the vet on duty there that night was heartless and compassion less when telling me from hundreds of miles away over the phone that unless i could pay upfront in full for a $1600 surgery that my dog would die. they also refused to provide after care until i could fly home later that week. I took the chance i had to and the next morning he was brought to Dr Meier (alive btw) Dr Meier knew his condition was bad, but explained that once on meds he would be stable enough to wait for surgery the following day. Dr Meier called me the next morning before and after surgery and twice a day with updates the days following until i made it back to TX. When i arrived to pick up my dog, he wanted to stay at the vet clinic. I dont believe there is a better testimony that that. They are ALWAYS kind and gentle and caring. They always make room for me and my pets even when something comes up and we dont have an appointment. If i moved to the other side of town i would drive the 45 mins to see Dr. Meier. They love my pets, and we love them.

Ive been bringing my pets (three cats and two dogs) to Leon Valley Vet for several years now. Theyve handled care all the way from helping diagnose and clean up a rescue dog to having to euthanize a sick cat. The care has been excellent. The office staff are friendly and caring (they all know my voice on the phone because my elderly animals are in so often), and Dr. Meier has always been right there to help with any questions or concerns Ive had. He never makes me feel like hes too busy, and rather than try to take over my pet care choices (like some past vets have done), he has been great about talking through the options with me and helping me arrive at my own decisions. The three phone calls I made during the treatment of my fatally ill cat stand out as extraordinary in my mind. Dr. Meier was getting no office fees or other payment for the phone calls, yet he stayed on the phone with me as long as I needed him to while I agonized over what to do. He didnt just provide exemplary care to my pet--he was looking out for my well-being and peace of mind too. Thats why Leon Valley Veterinary Hospital is my vet clinic. I wouldnt go anywhere else.

An untimely and unexpected illness in my kitty was a difficult time to start with a new veterinarian but I will continue to bring my animals to Dr. Meier as long as we live in the area. In giving me bad news he was forthright but kind. The entire clinic staff felt compassionate and I believe there is genuine love for animals here. I never felt as though I was being forced to make decisions I couldnt afford or wasnt prepared to make, and I did not feel the services were overpriced or that I was being led down the path of highest profit. My family worked in veterinary practice when I was growing up and I sort of judge all veterinarians (probably unfairly) against the one I grew up with. Dr. Meier reminds me very much of him - professional, compassionate, direct, and honest. While profit is of course important, genuine love of animals and respect for the human/pet relationship should take precedent and I think that is the case at Leon Valley Hospital. I look forward to visiting under happier circumstances in the future.
