I have used this vet for about one year for vet services and boarding services. The first time I went on vacation and left my miniature pincher, I was having her fixed. I was quoted the fees upon drop off. While I was out of the country the vet called and left a message stating that the fees would be more because the dog was in heat during the procedure. I knew this wasnt true because my dog had finished her cycle about three weeks prior to me boarding her. The second bad experience was when the same dog began to lose hair on her neck. I took her to the vet and the vet sold me some pills. ][No testing no nothing. Just an enormous office visit bill and meds. They didnt work and the hair continued to fall out. I called and the vet said that it was my fault because she had offered steroids and I said I didnt want any. I then took my dogs to another vet (Vanguard) and they did the test and found no parasites. Therefore, my dog shouldnt have been on any meds at all. The Vet at Vanguard stated that Princess (my dog) skin was irritated probably from the collar. I removed the collar and within a month the hair began to grow back. The third incident and the last time I will ever go to this vet was this last vacation. I boarded both my dogs (a teacup yorkie and a miniature pincher). They were there for 9 days.I dropped them off with food and feeding instructions and bags of treats for extra goodies. When I had returned My miniature pincher had went from 13.4 lbs to 10.5 lbs. I could see her hind legs sticking out and I could count all her ribs. she looked terrible. They handed me back my bags of food and one was still half full. They also handed me back my bags of extra cookies and bones and none had been given to the dogs. I just paid and left. I dont know what happened and I dont care but I will never take my dogs back and others should beware. I picked my dogs up last Monday and it is now Sunday. The miniature pincher looks better but not perfect and she is starting to act like her normal self. When she first came home she was very quiet. This is unusual for her. She is a barker. Well, not anymore. And I dont know why. I thought this vet was overpriced but if its worth it then ok. It turned out to be the worst vet I have experienced. This is the first review I have ever written about a vet.

I rarely take the time to post feedback but I do appreciate posts when I need to research new places and want non-biased customer feedback. After my first and last visit, this vet most certainly warranted feedback. I would NOT recommend this facility. I recently moved to San Antonio and was looking for a new veterinary clinic for my two dogs. One developed an ear infection and after researching vets close to my new home I found the Bulverde Animal Hospital with Dr Kothmann. Don’t let the decent looking website fool you. I should have picked up on the cheesy bio of the doctor and the strange profile picture. The clinic is off of highway 281 in a not too impressive ranch style building. Everything is old but orderly with the smell of an overly fragment candle trying to mask the smell of the office. The receptionist was nice as was the vet technician. It’s the actual doctor I do not like. My dog especially did not like him and I took it personal when the vet commented on how spoiled my dog appeared. Of course I was coddling him as he was petrified of the man hurting his bad ear. The vet tried to recover by stating, “but that’s how we like it here!” meaning they like to spoil their dogs here too. Too late, I was already offended. Strike one. Before the vet even looked at my dog, he inquired as to what brand of monthly medications he was taking for flea and tick control, heartworms, etc. He then proceeded to try to sell me on the brand his office prescribed. This was not the point of my visit and I was annoyed he kept pushing the subject and spent so long on the topic before he would even look at my dog. Strike two. Upon checkout, I was appalled at the bill. $250 for an ear infection? My dogs are prone to ear infections because of the breed and our vet back home had never charged me over $50 for the visit and the medication. I feel like he charged me for everything he could think of. Strike three. I will never return to this facility. I feel like I was taken advantage of and the fact that my dog hated this individual reconfirmed what my instinct had told me. This was an expensive lesson for myself, always go with your instinct, it’s there for a reason.

Pros: -Upfront with their prices (Which is unlike Smithson Valley Animal Hospital) -Evidently top notch practices and procedures (A Vet friend confirmed) -Friendly Dr. and staff -Detailed hard copy price estimates to talk over with the wife Cons: -Dr. is a good salesman and not the type that takes you golfing -Expensive (see below) But be sure you are like me before you consider my Review. I love pets, and working dogs, etc. Its my responsibility to have them neutered but its my burden to put them down when the time unfortunately comes. That said, I believe in keeping it humane...maybe a little more - but thats it. This place is expensive but justifiably. I had Veterinarian friend out of Houston compare estimates of a tumor removable and his price was literally half. He did say Bulverde Animal Hospitals price was accurate considering they offered the most comprehensive lab work, and used a laser instead of a scalpel etc. All I wanted was to have a tumor cut off safely. I dont carry my dog in a purse and they sleep outside. However this place may be just what you are looking for. Im often reminded of Easton Corbins song, "Im a little more country than that". I grew up having to remove tumors with a sharp pocket knife but times have changed and this cat is my wifes favorite. Being upfront with prices and providing detailed estimates goes along way with me. I would have given them 2 stars if not!!

We moved here from out of state and left a 25 yr relationship with our previous vet. We were more concerned about finding a vet for our 14 yr old dog than our own dr and dentists. We are VERY happy with our choice in Bulverde Animal Hospital. All of the staff is friendly, helpful and caring. Dr Kothmann listened to and documented our dogs history, explained all of our options and made suggestions when asked (and not until, which we found a little weird, but kind of refreshing). He made no assumptions about what we wanted, including getting vaccinations. The online pharmacy was suggested, but not required. We are finding that quite convenient - similar prices to what we were paying for other online pharmacies overall (some meds are more expensive, some cheaper). We have not been told to change any medications (as was the case with other vets we researched) and he will write a prescription for the one med that is difficult to get (we were warned about this by our previous vet). We will have to say goodbye to our baby in the not too distant future. We are so relieved to find a vet office to help us keep her comfortable and happy for as long as we can!
