I have been associated with this practice on and off for over 10 years... and there is not a more thorough and meticulous dentist in the Tidewater area. For Dr. Nottingham to take the time to explain in detail what he is doing... and why... and to personally handle his patients cleanings himself, is such an appreciated touch, and he runs his practice with the attitude that "if you want it done right, do it yourself". Last time I checked, there is not anyone better to do my dental hygiene then my dentist. Beats those dentist that do a drive by after the dental hygienist has finished, and find that area in my mouth that the hygienist may have missed. He also does his own impressions for crowns, and oral appliances used for sleep apnea. If something is not done to my satisfaction, the buck stops with him, and in that rare occasion that something isnt just right... I dont even have to ask him to correct it... His quality assurance demands nothing but the best, and thats what I get. I have never experienced anything but superb customer service from Amanda, the front desk staff, who initially told me today that the first available appointment might be mid to late September, which isnt bad for a dentist appointment, but did not work for my need. When I explained that I wore an oral device to sleep, that no longer functioned properly, and I needed help now, Amanda rose above and beyond and told me at 11:45 this morning that if I could be there by 12:30 (45 minutes later), Dr. Nottingham would see me and begin the process of restoring my oral device. What that meant of course is that he and Sarah, his assistant, were giving up part of their lunch break to help me, the patient in need. Sarah... who has been by Dr. Nottinghams side for 23 years, is the most personable and friendly chair side assistant I have ever met... and goes out of her way to assist with other duties and responsibilities such as... insurance issues, payments... etc. I can not believe what has been written about this Dentist and his staff... How many dentist will give you his cell number, and ask you to use it if an emergency happens, and trust me they do. Try and find a dentist with that kind of "caring spirit"! I have used this feature many years ago... and Dr. Nottingham actually answered the phone and opened his practice to help me with an emergency need I had, on a Saturday. Dental problems happen... and there is not a finer, more caring trio then Dr. Nottingham, Sarah and Amanda. As he has stated... hes not perfect... and hes not God... but he will do everything within his expertise... to correct whatever dental need you have. His practice is built on referrals only... and his hours are limited... but you wont find a better dentist and staff to treat you. Dr. Nottinghams office and exam rooms are fresh and clean... His state of the art dental tools and digital x-ray equipment allows for quick and safe results. Thank you Dr. Nottingham for being "exactly" like you are and thank you Amanda for your personality and customer service skills and Sarah... who is an awesome assistant and very professional and friendly.

As an older female new to the area, I was excited when I saw somewhat positive Yelp reviews on this dentist. I wish I would have seen these google reviews because my experience has been very similar to those already posted. 1) Im glad to know that I wasnt the only one who had bloody gums. They were very, very scraped up. In my 60+ years of going to the dentist, Ive never experienced such rough cleaning. The "hook" slipped multiple times and cut me. Sarah apologized and then kept cleaning as tears uncontrollably began to flow from my eyes. 2) I, too, received a bill from this practice when I had insurance that should have covered a basic cleaning. I called my insurance to ask what happened and was told this office had not actually even submitted the claim. This concerns me-- it is highly unethical and I hope it is investigated. 3) James Nottingham also made me uncomfortable with a sleezy pitch that if "I truly enjoyed my experience, I would spread it among my friends and family." 4) Scheduling was a nightmare. The front desk associate needs to brush up on her manners. I found her incredibly rude and devoid of any social etiquette.

I wouldnt recommend them to anyone due to the fact that my experience was horrible. This was my first visit to the office. The receptionist ask for my SS# and my husbands SS# which I declined to provide. The hygienist came and got me to go to the back about 10 minutes after my appointment time. She again asked for my husbands SS# saying that they had a hard time getting paid if they didnt have it. I told her I have never had any Dentist, Oral Surgeon nor Orthodontist tell me that before. I indicated that there was a ID number on the insurance card and that our insurance provider said that was all that was needed to file. The hygienist, Sarah, became very rude and suggested I may not want to use them since I didnt "trust" them. I felt very much invited to leave so I did. I returned to the front desk to cancel all the upcoming family appointments. At this point the hygienist proceeded to accuse me of being rude and very dramatically torn up the folder/ record she has been creating for me. This was probably the worst experience Ive ever had in a Dental office. I never even saw the doctor.

Dr Notingham is a wonderful one of a kind Dr., however, the receptionist Sarah is the rudest person you could have. One day she is friendly and another day she turns into the most stubborn and the rudest person. She charges about $2000.00 for the crowns that I hadnt have any treatment for them yet, I explained to her that my supplemental insurance wont cover for those cost I actually had one month later because there is certain amount they cover for certain period of time. At last appointment she said she could move that charges to the actual date I had the treatment, then at next appointment she refused to do anything about it and being stubborn that she didnt say it. I feel so sorry for the Dr. having such a mentally unstable rude person at his office. She also said to me in front of all other patients that I was the only person who had a problems with her in 23 years, look, someone else are very upset here too!!

The front desk woman was very rude, the dental hygienist (Sarah) was rough on my gums (they were bleeding for 3 days) and Nottingham was a bizarre man who made feel very uncomfortable when he talked to me about the practice. The billing situation was the most frustrating part of the experience. I had a root canal and two fillings done and was told PRIOR to the procedure that insurance would cover it. 3 weeks later and I got a bill for $1400 saying insurance did not cover the procedure. This is practice is being run by incompetent AND shady people-- not the best combination for patients. The parking situation is annoying (front desk girl handed me an expired garage fee waiver) and the building is old, dark, and musty. Theres literally hundreds of other dentists in the area, Id advise you go to any of them before this one.
