The most frustrating medical experiences of my life have come at the hands of Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia. They dont care about you. Its just a business. They are completely short-staffed with unfriendly and unprofessional nurses, who make it as obvious as possible that they simply do not care at all. On my first visit (to see a nurse practitioner - as no doctors were available), I was placed into an exam room 1 hour after my scheduled appointment, where I waited an additional 30 minutes before seeing anyone. My second visit paralleled my first visit in almost every regard. And, their complete disregard for patients time or emotions continues outside the confines of their crowded waiting room - as they are also terrible at refilling prescriptions. They require your pharmacy to fax in requests, but for each of my refills, I have had to call my pharmacy 3 times to re-submit requests before they take action. When my usual "how have you not gotten my refill request" call happened to fall on a Monday, I (unshockingly) found out that "no nurses or medical professionals work in the office on Monday." And that I "should have my pharmacy, fax a request in on Tuesday." My honest opinion -- Dermatology Associates of Virginia is the poster child for what is wrong with our health care system. They know that they can maximize their profit margins by overbooking appointments and hiring cheap, unfriendly help. They pad that thick profit margin further by arbitraging the partners (i.e. doctors) time by hiring low cost nurse practitioners and flooding their exam rooms with advertising collateral for out-of-pocket cosmetic tonics and procedures. Talking to their receptionist makes the tired lady renewing your license at the DMV look like Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Calling to get a prescription refill makes the Verizon Wireless Accounts Receivable Department feel like the Mandarin Oriental Concierge Desk. Sitting in their waiting room makes the line for the American Airlines Costumer Service Desk at OHare International Airport, on Christmas Eve, with a blizzard outside, feel like you are walking down the beach at sunset. Seriously, they dont care about you.

I never write reviews as I am way too occupied with work but I felt compelled to take a minute of my day to write about my experience with DAN. First, they were the only dermatologists in NOVA that could actually see me within 3 or 4 days from the time I called. Most others were so busy that they had a waiting time of 30 days. I had this terrible itching scalp and I just wanted to set fire to it. I could not wait a month to see a damn doctor. Second, NEVER in my life have I seen a doctor right on time, until I came to this place. Dr. Chaudhry, actually saw me at 3:30 p.m. sharp. I only waited about 7 minutes in the lobby and less than 5 in the examining room. Third, Dr. Chaudry was very pleasant (not to mention very pretty). She took the time to actually check for things, and ask me questions about me. I know it sounds ridiculous that I was actually impressed by such encounter but it is hard to find doctors that make an attempt to look like they care. She asked me twice if I had any other questions. Again, this is rare with specialists. They usually want you out of their offices before you can even introduce yourself. Fourth, she had the nurse, Laura, get me a sample and a coupon for my medicine. I later found out that the coupon that she gave me, brought the price down of my medicine from $200 to $25. Thank God. I was able to eat a $100 dollar steak dinner that night with those savings. Fifth, the medicine is actually working. After going through several treatments, different medicines and different doctors, Dr. Chaudhry was able to give me some relief. Albeit, temporary I suppose. Sixth, they are open Saturdays (I wish I had known that before I made my appointment on a Friday). I am giving it 4 stars because I have only been there once and this could only be just luck. We shall see.

Time and time again I have had the greatest experience when I go to DANV. Generally going to the doctor isnt one of my favorite activities, but DANV makes it such a pleasure every time I visit. Some people on yelp make erroneous claims about staff and scheduling errors, but in my 20 years of coming to the practice, I have never encountered any of these issues. The front desk is always helpful, polite, and efficient. Where this practice truly shines is its providers and their outstanding commitment to patient care. As a physician myself, I highly respect the work that these doctors do, and trust them whole heartedly. I have seen Dr. Mattay for 20+ years, and she is truly deserving of all the "Washingtonian Top Doc" nominations year after year. She has mastered the perfect combination of bedside manner and clinical acumen, and makes you feel comfortable regardless of the medical issue. I feel extremely well taken care of in her hands.

Stay away. Unfair practice. This office billed my insurance for office visit even so it was an annual preventive skin check. They insist that first visit is always "special" and at full cost. They didnt notify me about it during the appointment booking. I checked with both my insurance and dermatology office. Both replied its 100% covered. Now, office saying its not covered and my insurance saying its discretion of the derm office what code to bill. Easily taking $200 out of my pocket for preventive routine exam. Billing personnel is rude and not helpful. Office is dark and outdated, smells like an old house. Doctor is fine, spent enough time to answer some questions. But everything was so basic and didnt need an office visit. Every spot I asked was "its nothing serious, but we cant say more about it". They gave as some samples. Told me they will send prescription to pharmacy. Never did it. I would recommend visit another office.

I have now been to this practice several times for myself, my children and my mother seeing Dr. Asmaa Chaudhry every time. She has got to be one of the best doctors I have seen and I have seen MANY! Everything from her bedside manner, knowledge in the field to her patience in answering questions is perfect. She was soo comforting to my children and made their experience soo wonderful that they left saying how much they liked seeing her. My mother is now saying that she only wants to see her! I am always impressed and happy with my visit by the time I leave. Thank you Dr. Chaudhry!!

If I could give negative stars I would. The doctors office was to fax over a blood work standing order for the medication my son is on for his acne. We waited an hour and half at a lab on Saturday morning only to be told the paperwork was not there and the after hour physician on call said my request was an office problem not a physician problem so did not send or call the lab so my son could get his blood work done. Epic failure.

DANV just keeps growing and so does their prices. Unfortunately they care only about the money not a patients satisfaction. I was told that I would see results in a few months, that was in October. Still waiting. They lure you in with a false sense of them helping but instead they sit you down to tell you they wont be threatened by what you say about the way they operate. They should be investigated for false advertising.
