I took my 12 year old beagle to Martinsburg Animal Hospital for a teeth cleaning. I didnt want him to have this procedure but they assured me he needed it. I felt with his age that it would be too much - but I did the required bloodwork and he seemed "healthy enough". I asked them to remove a skin tag that was attached to his eye while performing the dental cleaning (as I was not ever going to let him have surgery again). I called to check on him and told he was fine. When I went to pick him up- I asked them if the remembered to move the skin tag from his eye. I was told "yes, we got both skin removals and cleaned his teeth". I yelled, "both, what are you talking about? I only requested one." He has had a fatty tissue tumor under his front left arm for many years and that vet previously (and others vets too) told me it is best to leave it and they would never try to remove it. Well, without my approval they decided to try to remove a portion of the grapfruit sized fatty tissue tumor from his chest (which had stopped growing up to that point in time). I was mortified - I was told there was some confusion about what they were supposed to remove. I had started to pay the bill before they told me about the removals and then once she realized they had scewed up she told me I only had to pay for the cleaning. Nice The area they cut open was so big and they didnt even put a drain. I asked for him to have pain medicine and they told me no, give him buffered asprin. He bled all over the place that night and was in so much pain. He swelled up so much at the incision, I thought he was going to die. I called the next day and demended for pain meds and the follwing day I went back for his incision site to be looked at because of the swelling. HIs fatty tissue tumor started growing back immediatly and is now even bigger then before. He is now 14 but the lump has grown so big that he limps terribly. It has been 2 years and I am still waiting for an apoloy from the Vet/owner of practice that did this to him. They are the worst vet ever imaginable with horrible customer satisfaction skills. It seems to me that they dont really care about the animals but rather what they can do to make more money. STAY AWAY from this vet.......they are awful!

I rarely give bad reviews but I had to share my horrible experience here. This place is just horrible. The people here are cold, impersonal and just plain rude. Ive been here twice and that is more than enough. Our family has 4 dogs.We also foster and work with rescues so we have plenty of experience with vets. 1) First red flag they dont let you go with your dog for anything even nails. They handle the dogs very rough and not with love and care. That is why they dont let you go with the animals. Very sketchy place. 2) I got nails and glands done on my dog and came back a couple days later because when I inspected my dog her glands were full so I figured they forgot , no biggie. They insisted they had did it last time and when they came back from the back they charged me yet again for the glands when I had not authorized it. They even held my dog hostage and wouldnt give her back until I paid the $12 3) That wasnt even the worst of it. The receptionist seems to always have a chip on her shoulder. I gave her a pass the first time because I just figured she was just having a bad day. The 2nd time I came in she asked me if I paid I said I guess so and while trying to explain that I was just here to make sure they had done what they said the first time she turns her back on me talks to the vet and comes back yelling at me accusing me of trying to lie. Give me a break like I am going to lie about $12. She basically accused me of being a thief and liar and wouldnt even release my dog until I paid. I didnt even bother arguing and paid even though I never authorized them to do the glands again. I was just checking to make sure they did it right the first time Ordinarily id go in with my dog and see what they were doing so it wouldnt be an issue.. They basically are a butcher shop, take a number, take your money goto the back tell you they are done and that is that. Any other vet would know that there is something wrong if your dog needs glands 2x in a week which I am not even sure to believe. They didnt even suggest more fiber or pumpkin in the diet or ask me anything to get to the root of the problem. There are many more choices nearby that actually know what they are doing and know how to treat people and animals.

I am so glad that you posted your story, kdrenner. We had just moved here and needed to find a vet. I took my little dog in to get her teeth cleaned and her shots. I was told when to pick her up. My former great vet (Texas) would have called me when she was out of surgery and also let me know before hand if teeth needed pulled. When I picked her up, I just glanced at the bill and noticed she had a duplicate shot (Lyme). She had just had one in Dec. and I had provided all this information with her records so they would know what she had done in the last few years from former vet. I was so upset she got this other shot as I think that some shots are not necessary every year. Well, the lady just said, well it wont hurt her. I said, that is the reason I brought the records with me so this would not happen. I was mad. So the next day I was looking over the bill closer. I too was charged for 4 teeth that were pulled that I did not know about or authorize. I was not even told this when I picked her up. I called and left a message for the vet to call me back. That was in April and I am still waiting here in June. My other dog needs her teeth cleaned and numerous growths removed and I have been leary of using them again. I will take your suggestion and try the vet in Hedgesville.

I have NEVER given a review before. But due to my dog almost dying due to a SIMPLE bladder stone removal surgery I felt the need to post. I felt that due to reviews and due to their cheap pricing I would trust the Dr. I should have trusted my gut instinct...they had asked if I would like blood work to be done. I had agreed to this. After the surgery, I was told that the readings were odd and they needed to be redone in 4 weeks. There was no urgency to have it redone. No later than a week later my dog had a seizure and defacated. I rushed her to an emergency vet close by. Blood work was taken and her rbc count was 8 percent! It should have been 30!...the next morning i went to martinsburg to speak with the dr personally. He said in his records my dog had a rbc count of 8 percent BEFORE the surgery. He and the emergency vet said if rbc is below 15 then they usually cannot produce their own. He said that was low...okay, so you did surgery on a dog with 8 percent rbc count! If it was 5% or below my dog would have died!!! We had to have a blood transfusion for her (at a different facility), and fortunately is doing well now. I hope they focus more on the animals instead of making a quick buck.
